To want to sell up and buy this house by the sea?

caramara · 01/05/2020 13:40

Lockdown boredom has set in and started looking for somewhere to buy with what I could roughly have in equity if I sold my house.

I know Jaywick is a bit rough (I'm the opposite side of Essex currently so know the area a little) but still, can it really be that bad? The idea of being mortgage free is quite appealing, and the house looks like it requires no work at all, plus I love the kitchen.

And I could walk to the beach!

the house

Please tell me I'm BU/ point out all the faults with my plan!

wonder

I posted links to a couple of houses up thread for £150k on the Yorkshire coast.

York station is on the East coast main line a couple of hours from kings cross and many places on the coast an hour away, so far from isolated, and it's not like the OP needs to be in daily commuting distance, which Jaywick isn't anyway.

ChainsawBear · 02/05/2020 13:06

I'm also baffled by the 'unbelivably cheap' comments

It's unbelievably cheap for Essex (and as the thread demonstrates, there are reasons why). Not everybody wants to or can move to Lincolnshire.

AmelieTaylor · 02/05/2020 13:26

@gingersausage

Why do you always get so pissy with people?

The OP asked for opinions, not a set of instructions! She's allowed to make her own mind up without being scolded!

wonderwhatnext · 02/05/2020 13:26

Barbara - well it’s good to know that there are options elsewhere in the country, but I think if you’ve always lived in London / Essex, then Yorkshire does feel quite far north. It’s a bit like if you lived in Leeds but fancied moving to the Yorkshire coast, but then people started posting houses in Aberdeen. I’m sure Yorkshire is lovely though.
OP, might you consider Suffolk / Norfolk?

RainMustFall · 02/05/2020 13:36

Jaywick is the most deprived place in the country. The house is not a detached house, it's a chalet, the living room looks like a corridor the rooms are small and the kitchen is weird. The garden mostly consists of a small square with whatever is on the ground covered in mould. I would also take into consideration that because it's in Jaywick, it will be really difficult to sell.

If you are still determined to move to Jaywick, how about this for £10k more?: www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/53983377?featured=1&utm_content=featured_listing or this for £175k: www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/54822775?search_identifier=34c168cca50069c29b89c1a9553a817b

I was reluctant to list the above because the thought of moving to Jaywick is beyond bonkers but it's your life.

Scruffyoak · 02/05/2020 13:46

We looked at this one. It's in a horrid horrid area

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 02/05/2020 14:10

What I find quite sad, is that it appears that the owners have taken sons pride in their wee house and tried to keep it nice. It must be horrible to try and have a nice home in such a neglected area. I bet they were so proud when they first bought it. Sad

Sconio123 · 02/05/2020 14:16

T0tally check the street view link on the listing. Looks like the owners have done tons of work, especially on the outside...

Scruffyoak · 02/05/2020 14:20

Felixstowe
Lowestoft
Gorleston

Have a look at those.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/05/2020 14:21

It's really not. I live in Leeds, Aberdeen is at least 6 hours away.So not the same as an extra hour or so's travel to find a much nicer house in a much nicer area with much better amenities.

wonderwhatnext · 02/05/2020 14:51

Ok, but psychologically, somewhere like Scarborough Is the same distance north from Essex as Aberdeen would feel for a Yorkshire person. Connections may be better, but still..,

BarbaraofSeville · 02/05/2020 15:06

Apologies, I wasn't accounting for the average London dweller's aversion to anywhere north of the M25. Logic and geography makes much more sense round here.

nettie434 · 02/05/2020 15:39

I loved those houses you posted links to BarbaraofSeville. There are lots of reasons why the OP might want to stay in Essex but if the request is just for a price range and radius of a particular place, there is nothing to lose from looking somewhere different.

No use now when I need to work but I thought those houses were lovely for the price. And what views! So, when I want to swop my south London terrace for somewhere else, I’ll be looking for some advice here.

wonderwhatnext · 02/05/2020 16:07

Distance Southend to Scarborough - 270 miles
Distance Scarborough to Aberdeen - 340 miles

So, geographically and logically, Scarborough pretty much midway between the two then, give or take 70 miles?

Anyway, it doesn’t matter, as I suggested the Kent coast of Devon / Dorset way, but OP has made it clear she wants to stay in Essex.

wonderwhatnext · 02/05/2020 16:09

But yes, Barbara, the houses you posted are much better value for money, obviously.

caramara · 02/05/2020 16:11

I would consider leaving Essex, but I don't want to move to Yorkshire or further north.

I'm not a massive fan of the Kent coast, but properties everywhere on the South coast are going to be out of reach. Yes I could afford a home. But not the detached 3 bed I want. I'd love to live near West Bay for example, but I could never afford it. And I don't need to move, I want to. So I'd rather find a house I like, maybe not in my favourite area, that buy anything just because it was the right price.

caramara · 02/05/2020 16:13

Further north than Yorkshire I mean.

I've looked at the East Anglia towns mentioned, there are properties but more at the 170k level, which at the moment is a bit out of reach. But worth bearing in mind. Just means I'll be staying here a bit longer.

Look at Gorleston-on-Sea.... best beach and a lovely little town!

VeganVeal · 02/05/2020 16:36

Jaywick has got The Rainbows End 'adult gaming lounge', sounds great, I'm off....................

MaggieTheFrog · 02/05/2020 16:38

What about the Welsh coast? Some absolutely beautiful areas and houses and great links from Cardiff to London.
N.Wales again doable with the budget and good links to major city's, B'ham,Liverpool etc.

To be honest Jaywick even makes look Rhyl look like Laguna beach in comparison Confused

clarehhh · 02/05/2020 20:16

I saw that tv programme huge unemployment and drug problems.

Shirls22 · 02/05/2020 21:41

My mother in law used to say location, location, location, it’s always better to have a smaller property in a nice location than a big property in a poor location where no one wants to live, chances are it’s on the market at a low price for a reason

retirementrocks · 02/05/2020 22:11

I hope you're joking! Lived near Jaywick many, many years ago and it was pretty shitty then...worse now so I understand.

Bluntness100 · 02/05/2020 22:35

So I'd rather find a house I like, maybe not in my favourite area, that buy anything just because it was the right price

Honestly that doesn’t tally with considering that house in jaywick, which would indicate you would buy anything anywhere if it was in budget. Because that house in that location is nearly as bad as it gets.

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/05/2020 22:38

It is a strange thing to say, isn't it? What about that little wooden shack house appeals to you, op?
