To ask for your hill you will die on? LIGHTHEARTED

As per the meme ‘I will die on this hill’ what are your lighthearted hills you’re willing to die on?

Mine:

Phoebe Buffay is the worst friends character. She is not kooky, she’s mean, selfish and always looking for ways to put the other friends down. Everyone is too busy hating Ross to realise Phoebe is a cock. I will die on this hill.

This thread is reminiscent of the unpopular opinions bit on BBC radio 1.

🎵Come and give us your unpopular opinion, something up to now that you've been scared to say!🎵

The lovely Greg James no less. Grin

steppemum · 07/05/2020 08:06

banana in curries - 1970s curry, had dessicated coconut, raisins and bananas as side dishes which you added to your curry!

I'm happy to have banana in a mild creamy yellow based curry sauce. Not my first choice, but OK. Not in anything tomato based though

Cooking bacon is one of the most disgusting smells ever. Envy (not envy)

Less/fewer - know the difference.

Trees are amazing, astrotruf is for wrong’uns.

All musicals are crap, cringeworthy and twee!

It’s BOXED sets not box sets.

It’s a set of films that are boxed. Originally called boxed sets.

A box set is a set of boxes.

Moet is pronounced mow-ett not now-ee or mow-ay.

And yes, Scottish blend is best.
Brilliant thread!

1Morewineplease · 07/05/2020 09:14

*mow-ee

SporadicNamechange · 07/05/2020 09:28

And they’re not boxed sets if you watch them through a bloody streaming service. You don’t want a recommendation for a ‘box set’ on Netflix; you want people to recommend a series you might enjoy.

BikeRunSki · 07/05/2020 14:16

They’re not boxed sets or box sets, or anything like that, they are TV series.

SporadicNamechange · 07/05/2020 14:34

Yes. Although you can buy many tv series in a physical ‘boxed set’ if you want to. I can’t imagine many people do these days.

lovinglavidaloca · 07/05/2020 18:22

@BrooHaHa sang that in the exact voice he does in my head. I miss Greg! Don’t hear him anyone now I’m furloughed and have no commute.

Binkybix · 07/05/2020 21:48

The theatre is boring.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 08/05/2020 10:33

Plastic grass is awful

nonamehere · 08/05/2020 12:04

Costa coffee is terrible and hugely overpriced. See also Starbucks and Caffe Nero.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/05/2020 12:45

Starbucks can just sod off.

7Worfs · 08/05/2020 18:33

If you come from the UK, it's pronounced re-SEARCH. Not REE-search.

Pronunciation changes for words that are both verb and a noun, such as research, resource, detail etc

When the emphasis is on the beginning of the word, it’s a noun.
Emphasis at the end is a verb.

WildOrchids67 · 08/05/2020 18:39

Haven't RTFT so don't know if this has been mentioned, but here we go. Deep breath.

Beyonce is overrated.

FourPlasticRings · 08/05/2020 18:41

I do this, but had no idea I was doing it! Thanks- that's really interesting.

7Worfs · 08/05/2020 18:47

FourPlasticRings I looked it up because of the way Patrick Stewart pronounces words. Smile

Bad side effect is that you'll now start hearing how many people say it wrong. I think there's a real trend going on to pronounce nouns as a verb in an attempt to sound smart (like using myself/yourself when it's me/you).

Standing on the left on a Tube escalator should be a hanging offence.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/05/2020 22:33

Letting your stupid fucking dog chase the swans and itty bitty ducklings in the pond - and laughing like a complete idiot about it - should be a flogging offence.

FourPlasticRings · 08/05/2020 22:36

Standing on the left on a Tube escalator should be a hanging offence.

I'm not a Londoner and it's been yeara since I've been on the tube, but I'm pretty sure everyone was standing on the left last time I was on one? And there were signs telling you to do so so others could rush past you on the right?

Lordfrontpaw · 08/05/2020 22:37

No - the right, always the right...

FourPlasticRings · 08/05/2020 22:39

Why? That's contrary to the rules on every other escalator, staircase and road in the country, surely? Keep to the left, overtake on the right?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 08/05/2020 22:41

You stand on the right on the Tube escalators, the left-hand side is for those walking (aka those who have somewhere to be and want to get there faster).

It is not - repeat NOT - a space for luggage, large musical instruments or the person you're talking to

FourPlasticRings · 08/05/2020 22:42

I have googled. Apparently, the reason for it is historic. And it'd be quicker if everyone just stood on both sides and no one overtook.
