Harryevie1 mine was NHS staff trial too at SJUH Leeds

NegativeNellyy · 30/04/2020 21:09

First swab came back negative
they stuck it about 3 cm up my nose and not very far down my throat. That was negative.

3 days later cough started and temps continued so I opted to do it myself

Swab up the snozzle up so far back you think your brain in going to fall out.. or if your a hcp how far back you go to fit an ng tube. Then same tube right at the back of my throat past tonsils and roughly across and down the throat w little bit.

I do the tests at work and this is my trusts guidance on nasal swabs..

2nd swab came back positive

Just to clarify...

That photo shows the swab entering up through the nose to reach the nasopharyngeal palette, not through the mouth to the throat

Winterwoollies · 30/04/2020 21:24

Is it as bad as the Group Strep B swabs? 😣

Apolloanddaphne · 30/04/2020 21:35

My friend is a doctor. She says if the test doesn't make you gag and your eyes water then it wasn't done right.

loocylocket · 30/04/2020 21:45

There was a whole bunch of us there today who felt the same. One poor lad even got a nose bleed. Shock
The receptionist told us someone from a previous week now has black bruises under eyes!

Nb: we're nhs staff being tested as a result of positive results in colleagues and patients

Sounds like our swabber was doing it right then, from what I'm reading !

There's absolutely NO way I could have performed this test on myself! And I'm a nurse!!!

Hope you've all recovered Daffodil

My MIL had one. She swabbed herself in the car last week, she said it wasn't bad at all. I said to my DM I think she has it and didn't go deep enough. Came back negative.

Today she was rushed into hospital, with it.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 30/04/2020 21:56

Yes, it was fucking awful. Right down my throat enough to make me gag. Then right up me schnozz

Maighdeann · 30/04/2020 22:04

They're doing blood tests here with a twenty minute wait. I'd rather have that if possible.

Northernsoullover · 30/04/2020 22:18

Where are you @Maighdeann

Givemeyourbunsandyourbiscuits · 30/04/2020 22:44

I had a throat swab, no nose swab. Not sure why they don’t do both swabs where I am. Didn’t hurt, didn’t make me gag. Was negative but I expected that.

Maighdeann · 30/04/2020 22:55

Dubai

alibongo5 · 30/04/2020 23:03

We were instructed where to swab in our throat, and that it should make us gag. But the the nose swabs (both sides) only needed to be just inside the nostril and swab around it, not to stick it up inside.

I'm fairly certain that's not right re the nose. I was told that the MRSA swab is just inside the nose but the Covid needs to be very high up. Otherwise it is not a true test and is likely to give a false negative.

CaptainCabinets · 30/04/2020 23:11

I had mine yesterday, negative result back already. However, my experience wasn’t as traumatic as described here! I swab people every day at work but I had to do my own swab, maybe I hesitated/didn’t push it far enough because I know how people react when I do theirs?

I’m slightly symptomatic so I’m worried I’ve had a false negative Sad

Mallomarsh · 30/04/2020 23:24

If I had to test myself I wouldn't have even thought I could push a swab that far up my nose.
I have been very unwell (not covid) so was feeling fragile anyway. I too backed away and then burst into tears and the nurse felt so bad but I tried to say it wasn't her fault.
It's a very horrible sensation. But I suppose worth it if you're lucky enough to get one.

Hoping to get the results tomorrow. I've been kept in isolation in my own room on a ward. We're not in the covid part of the hospital. We're not allowed to leave our rooms understandable. Very eerie.

CaptainCabinets honestly if it was that tricky they wouldn't get ppl to self swab so I would trust the result x

REdReDRE · 01/05/2020 00:29

I think I'd prefer to isolate for two weeks than have the test! I've had surgery on my nose and now can't stand anything going up it. Could cope with the throat bit.

symptomaticMNer · 01/05/2020 04:52

Did one Wednesday. Not convinced I did it right (self swab at drive through). Tried to do as the prep video had said, which was slightly different to written instructions on the day. Result came back negative. Still feel rough as shit though.

drcb83 · 01/05/2020 05:12

I will be tested twice a week from next week so will let you know!

enragedpenfold · 01/05/2020 05:33

Only doing throat here, not nose. It wasn’t that bad - left me a bit sore for a day but soon done. Negative. (Been in contact with two positive cases - but I waited so long for the test appointment I expected it to be negative even if I had actually had it and recovered.

bettybattenburg · 01/05/2020 05:39

That’s why I’ve heard the self testing kits are no good (from a GP). The swab needs to be taken really far back in the throat and up the nose, and it would be extremely difficult to do it to yourself.

Oh the joy, not looking forward to having go do that to my DCs when the kit arrives then Confused

Nquartz · 01/05/2020 06:24

What is the Oxford trial & how are people being selected?

Surely no one could stick something that far up their own nose!

My friend had hers at one of the Boots drive through testing stations & got a positive result so presumably they are more accurate than doing it yourself.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/05/2020 08:15

Nquartz
This is the ONS / Oxford Uni study.
www.ons.gov.uk/news/news/onsjointlyleadinggovernmentslargescalevirusinfectionandantibodyteststudy

Initial participation selection is households who have previously been involved in an ONS study (random selection for that I understand) and have indicated that they are happy to be involved in future studies.
My household did the Labour Force study in January, and are having quartley followup calls on that for a year.
We received a special delivery letter about this COVID survey on the morning of the day Matt Hancock announced it in the press briefing, and a text to confirm it had been sent to us.

ItchyKondera · 01/05/2020 08:29

I went to a drive through one on Monday, self administered. I don't think i stuck it up my nose far enough although it did make my eyes water a hell of a lot, and i swabbed my throat as much as i could without throwing up.

Came back as "not clear" - so i guess I didn't do it properly!

Its all well and good doing all these thousands of tests, but not if they are not done properly which is bloody hard if you do are doing it yourself

Fluffybutter · 01/05/2020 08:55

I’m worried threads like this will put people off being tested as I know it has,me ! 😭

Silab · 01/05/2020 09:06

Unpleasant. Far enough up the nose to make the eyes water. Far enough I the throat to make you gag (was offered a sick bowl). I'm a nurse and don't think I could have effectively swabbed myself.
Result was positive.
