PS waiting for my results will keep you posted

TowerRingInferno · 30/04/2020 18:59

Friend of mine had one a few days ago and said she thought she was going to be sick. Really unpleasant but over very quickly.

GenderApostate19 · 30/04/2020 19:01

Doesn’t mean you ARE negative, assuming you have symptoms.
We both tested negative but 99% sure we have it.

Despite official advice that a negative result means you can end isolation, the Doctor has told us to carry on isolating for at least 10 days/ 3+ days after last raised temperature, we are day 5 today.

Sheepareawesome · 30/04/2020 19:02

Twice, was quite unpleasant but funny to watch the kids' faces when they stuck it up their noses! Not impressed! Negative both times but as a hospital worker I reckon I will get it at some point.

Redcherries · 30/04/2020 19:07

I’ve had numerous colonoscopies and endoscopy without sedation.

I’ve seen a video of the swab test.

Fuck that shit knock me the fuck out if I need one.

Sympathy to all that have. My poor aunt is 96 had one at the begof the week, she’s still too distraught to talk to me.

Reallybadidea · 30/04/2020 19:10

I had one yesterday. It didn't make me gag, but apparently I'm great at blow jobs so maybe there's a link Grin

2outof3Mightbebad · 30/04/2020 19:10

I found it very uncomfortable. Some say painful, some say fine.

People are different.

Robs20 · 30/04/2020 19:11

I had one earlier this week and it was fine...maybe it wasn’t done correctly...

Lindy2 · 30/04/2020 19:13

Mine was ok. Not pleasant at all but they were thankfully very quick.

With the nose one I kept instinctively backing away but she wasn't going to let me get away with that and the nose swab just went higher up even though I was trying to get further away. It was like some weird nose swab game of dodge.

I was a bit embarrassed that I backed away as I'm sure it wasn't very helpful for the tester but I couldn't help myself. I had no pain or discomfort afterwards though with either the nose or throat. It was just very weird for the 5 -10 seconds they were doing it.

I'm not sure how people can home test. I don't think I'd be able to shove the swabs that far up my own nose or throat.

Lynda07 · 30/04/2020 19:15

No. Never heard of it. What is 'covid swab', sounds vile!

thequeenofsandwich · 30/04/2020 19:18

My God
Had it today at work. Throat - did that u recognisable sound come from me ?
Nose - went up , over & down the back . Tears were streaming as I tried to appear dignified....

Hoggleludo · 30/04/2020 19:18

Have you not seen the video of it?!?

They make you put your head back to get the swab towards your brain it goes so far back! The. They make you wait. Then they swirl it around

Then take it out. It’s horrific.

Lindy2 · 30/04/2020 19:22

Whist it was up my nose I was thinking that the cotton swab bit at the end better not fall off - they might never locate it again!

TaxFool · 30/04/2020 19:27

I've had one but it wasn't as brutal as I was anticipating, which does make me wonder if they were thorough enough. Throat swab was quick and a bit gaggy. Nose swab was unpleasant but again fairly quick. It left my nose feeling odd for a few days after though. They really do tickle your eyeballs.

I had contact with a confirmed case. My result was negative. My positive friend had a full 10 second countdown on both swabs Sad It probably depends on the swabber.

DirtyTicket · 30/04/2020 19:27

We all had to have one yesterday. We were given the kits, advised how to use the swan then had to drive to a separate bay to perform the test ourselves. I did both kids and myself, husband did his own test. It wasn't as bad as I expected. Although now reading this thread I'm wondering if I did it right!

2outof3Mightbebad · 30/04/2020 19:28

It's not horrific or brutal. Words have meaning 🙄

aquashiv · 30/04/2020 19:30

Dd had it wasn't pleasant. In nose and throat but no COVID-19.

TaxFool · 30/04/2020 19:36

@DirtyTicket I wouldn't have been able to do it to myself. Whose terrible idea were DIY swabs? Mine was a drive thru of sorts, but all carried out my medical personnel (not in UK).

Chasingsquirrels · 30/04/2020 19:36

I did wonder about the nose bit, but the tester was very specific that we should NOT stick it up our nose, and to just swab around the inside of each nostril.
I suppose they don't want you doing yourself any damage, but equally if it compromises the integrity of the test...

I don't expect positives anyway, none of us are unwell and we've been at home with almost no contact with anyone else, and what we have had has been at a distance, since a few days pre-lockdown.

This was for the Oxford Uni ongoing survey.

Lindy2 · 30/04/2020 19:56

So the DIY tests ask you to swab the inside of both nostrils? Our ones we had done by medical staff were just one nostril but they go quite a way up.

Perhaps the DIY ones ask for both sides as an alternative to the high up swab, that really wouldn't be very easy to do on yourself.

EKGEMS · 30/04/2020 20:01

I had it performed today but while unpleasant not the worst but then again I also had an Ear,Nose and Throat doc put a scope with a camera on the end up around and in my sinuses while fully awake so it's hard to complain about the swab

PrincessConsuela12 · 30/04/2020 20:05

40 weeks pregnant & I've been told I'll need to be tested when I go into labour. Absolutely dreading it 😳😫

2Rebecca · 30/04/2020 20:37

If done properly it should feel brutal. A good swabber should have little empathy.

Harryevie1 · 30/04/2020 20:44

I had one today as part of trial ( NHS staff ) - I think there must be something wrong with me - I didn’t think it was too bad !! Bit like a chimney sweep had been up my right nostril but felt pretty non snotty afterwards . Just felt uneven - left nostril needed clean out too !!

DirtyTicket · 30/04/2020 21:02

TaxFool we were surprised ourselves. We were given 4 bags of testing kit which were passed through the car window by someone using one of those long grabby things that people use to pick things up that are out of reach. We were then directed to a parking bay around the corner where we performed the tests without supervision. Put simply, we swabbed the back of the throat and up each nostril.

We were surprised ourselves that we had to go it ourselves, I expected it to be like I'd seen on the news. Luckily me and husband are both medical so are used to taking swabs. It wasn't pleasant at all but nowhere near as bad as I was expecting.
