That a toaster should fit bread in it??

Just that really.

We need a new toaster. Had a look on Amazon and many of the reviews say things like "looks nice/toasts well/quick... BUT does not fit a full slice of bread in." A quick look on the Which? website says the same in their reviews too. How can this be??? Do toaster manufacturers not know how big bread is?

On that note, if anyone can recommend one that fits normal bread especially Warburtons toastie loaf in, that would be greatly appreciated

Asda do a stainless steel 2 slice toaster for £18. Fits the large Warburton slices in with no issues.

Yes it's so hard to find toasters that can actually fit in a normal sized slice. Even the expensive ones are often way too small.

I have a Sainsbury's own brand one that is brill, can fit even the largest slices with ease. Can't find it on their site any more but it looked like this one - was only £25

I make toast using a panini press.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/04/2020 15:18

I have a lovely patterned one from Asda that fits in full slices

British bread is a different shape to European bread. Most manufacturers make for the biggest market which is Europe. So British bread won’t fit in most toasters. Having said that I have a Bosch toaster and if I put the bread sideways it fits nicely.

BertiesLanding · 30/04/2020 15:19

You lie the bread on its side.

MulticolourMophead · 30/04/2020 15:24

My toaster is fine on the width of bread, can take larger sizes, but it's the length that's the problem. I find I'm toasting the bottom half of some brands of bread, then flipping over to toast the top half.

And this rather defeats the object of a toaster.

I can just about slide a slice of Aldi Toastie in the right way, and luckily bread does shrunk slightly as it toasts so the toast comes out easily. But manufacturers should be wise to this. All it really needs is the slot to be about 1cm or so longer than currently.

Thanks for the recommendations Smile

thecapitals I didn't know this. How interesting. (Not sarcasm, I genuinely hadn't considered there might be different standard sizes of bread!)

Berties I would have thought the many reviewers might have considered trying this

Berries/multicolour my toaster doesn't need the bread to be put in a certain orientation

CD41 · 30/04/2020 15:46

We’ve recently bought a Breville flow toaster and it fits all the bread in - we were pleasantly surprised. Our old didn’t!

MsVestibule · 30/04/2020 15:51

I've never had this problem and I've had a few toasters. Just lie the bread on its side and unless it's exceptionally large (tall), it always goes in. My friend (in her late 40s) was AMAZED when I told her that bread fit into a toaster sideways!!

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2020 16:06

There is a toaster that claims to be designed for Warburtons toastie bread. It even comes with a sticker on the side featuring a picture of a bag of Warburtons bread.

It does not take a slice of Warburtons toastie bread Grin Hmm

While we're at it, has anyone ever been able to find a lasagne dish that fits a whole number of lasagne sheets without having to cut any up?

MsVestibule · 30/04/2020 17:04

@barbaraofseville - now that, I would buy!!

BelfryBat · 30/04/2020 17:06

I don't buy much ready-sliced bread so I cut the bread to fit my toaster. However I do lie ready-sliced on its side so that it fits in the slot. It's not rocket science!

Apolloanddaphne · 30/04/2020 17:07

I put my bread in sideways and it fits perfectly.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 30/04/2020 17:07

Barbara haha no that's true. This could be a whole new thread about things that that dont seem fit for purpose... cheese and sliced meat that doesn't fit on bread is another bugbear of mine

I used to have a toaster with one long slot so it was double the length of a normal toaster and it toasted everything - think they still sell this type in Argos & on Amazon

Reginabambina · 30/04/2020 17:11

Are you sure you’re putting it in the right way? Are you buying the big spongey supermarket bread?

bridgetreilly · 30/04/2020 17:40

Yes, you need a 4-slice toaster, and then you can put 2 slices bread on its side and it'll work perfectly. A 2 slice toaster is useless.

1Morewineplease · 30/04/2020 17:51

Have recently bought a new toaster based on fantastic reviews.
It takes no size of loaf that we’ve ever had.
We have resorted to using the grill on in our oven and it toasts so much better than any toaster has ever done.
Dreading the electricity bill though.

Baconking · 30/04/2020 17:53

@MsVestibule @BelfryBat
If it's not rocket science can you tell me how you turn this bread on its side?
Surely that only works for a 4 slice toaster?

That a toaster should fit bread in it??
