That a toaster should fit bread in it??

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 30/04/2020 14:30

Just that really.

We need a new toaster. Had a look on Amazon and many of the reviews say things like "looks nice/toasts well/quick... BUT does not fit a full slice of bread in." A quick look on the Which? website says the same in their reviews too. How can this be??? Do toaster manufacturers not know how big bread is?

On that note, if anyone can recommend one that fits normal bread especially Warburtons toastie loaf in, that would be greatly appreciated

I have a stainless steel one from asda does 4 slices, fits my bread in and also I do Muffins and Crumpets in there x

I'm sure we had this thread just a couple of weeks ago.

Most brand name toasters can't cope with british bread. They ware made for the international market, apparently British bread is bigger than bread in other countries.

The solution to this problem is to buy a British supermarket own-brand toaster, as it will have been designed specfically for the British Market. (But double-check before you buy.)

ladymalfoy · 30/04/2020 18:16

I read ‘what a tosser’ . But this reminds me of a thread about whether a packet of cereal can be upside down. Or was it the contents ?

RandomLondoner · 30/04/2020 18:16

I have an Asda own-brand two-slice toaster. It toasts any British slice, you put the slices in on their side.

Previous toaster was Philips, I think. Slots not long enough for slices to go in sideways, did not toast the whole slice when put in vertically.

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 30/04/2020 18:17

I always pop toast up halfway through toasting and turn it over as it never toasts evenly on both sides otherwise Confused

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2020 18:17

Cliche, but Dualit.

RandomLondoner · 30/04/2020 18:18

I think we should probably all write to our MPs and ask for a law against selling toasters that can't fit British Bread. I've been on here for years, and we keep having this discussion over and over. The purchase of unsuitable toasters is never going to end as long as they're allowed to be sold.

MsVestibule · 30/04/2020 18:20

@baconking - dunno, really!! I've only ever bought cheap toasters - our last one was a 2 slice Cookware (I think that's Argos's own brand) and it always worked. How tall is the bread vs the toaster hole?

Sexnotgender · 30/04/2020 18:51

@BarbaraofSeville not dried lasagna sheets no. However my lasagna dish fits the Morrison’s fresh lasagna sheets perfectly. One sheet per layer. It’s so neat and no bits of dried pasta fly round my kitchen as I try and break them!

bridgetreilly · 30/04/2020 18:58

That's a sign of a bad toaster, sadly.

MylittleLovebug · 30/04/2020 19:02

we had this problem ordered a toaster and it didn't fit bloody bread had to turn it half way to cook the whole thing, ridiculous. Got a Russel and hobby toaster which fits a slice of bread no problem

laundryelf · 30/04/2020 19:12

George Home brand at Asda, comes four and two slice versions, £25 for four slice. It can be a bit lop sided at times, one side of slice dark other light but if you warm it by running empty that helps. It's the only toaster that I have found that fits Warburton's toastie and super toastie bread. Also great for their bagels which are so much nicer than New York brand!

Agree with previous poster the one that's sold as a Warburton's bread toaster does not fit Warburton's toastie bread!

JKScot4 · 30/04/2020 19:14

Delonghi brilliante 4 slice, fits toasty no
bother.

TinnedPearsForPudding · 30/04/2020 19:23

I actually took a slice of bread with me when I needed to buy a new toaster. We bought the only one which could fit a standard slice of white bread

mrsBtheparker · 30/04/2020 22:13

Best one we have bought is a cheapish one from Sainsburys, their own brand, it's a 4 slice one and takes most of the bread sizes.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 01/05/2020 14:28

I can't believe this got to 2 pages of replies. Thanks for all the advice (and especially the posters who shared pics 😂).

I also didn't realise there had been lots of discussion about this in here already... I just popped a quick post on during my tea break after being a bit baffled by the reviews I'd read.

Our current toaster will fit one in sideways at a squeeze, which was what surprised me more reading the other reviews. We got it, and the matching kettle, from Asda 10 years ago when we first moved into our house. They're both ready to give up now, so maybe supermarket ones are the way forward.

I bought a '4 slice' toaster with 2 extra long slots for precisely this reason.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 01/05/2020 15:48

I've only seen a SMEG one like that Maggie and it was over £100!

Mine just about fits toastie bread but it squashes in and comes out all bent which then makes it difficult to butter properly Grin

IamEarthymama · 01/05/2020 15:59

I recently bought a new toaster and kettle from Dunelm

I am very pleased with both of them, I had been "making do" for a while and it's lovely to have these.

Toastie Bread fits in perfectly

Yes I have just bough a Brevill for exactly this reson, and it did have a sticker on it saying Fits Warburton toasty and it does

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/05/2020 16:00

About 20 years ago I worked in the electrical department of a department store.
One quiet morning I went round and measured the size of all the different toasters.

The deepest and widest slots are proper Dualit toasters. The expensive ones. The cheap ones are just made under license.

MaggieAndHopey · 01/05/2020 16:27

@ShouldIStaySelfIsolatedStaySelf It's a Breville and I think it was about £30! It's great, had it a couple of years now with no issues.

Bargainhuntbore · 01/05/2020 16:40

Who eats Warburton🤮 loathe it, dries up.

EveLevine · 01/05/2020 17:10

We've got one that I bought from Sainsburys, but it's a Cookworks which I believe is Argos/Sainsburys own brand now.

It easily fits a slice in sideways - we normally have Warburtons, Hovis or Kingsmill Vitamin Boost and it fits them all.

The one we have isn't available from Sainsburys anymore, but you can still get it in Argos -
