To not be able to agree on this 'simple' question

Please help me answer, to DH, what has been an ongoing discussion for at least 4 weeks:

A shop closes at 12pm (midday) and reopens at 2pm the same day. 12pm on the dot, 2pm on the dot. How long is the shop closed for, in hours?

There's no riddle behind it, nothing to bend time, stop clocks etc etc

It's also not a trick question, we just can't agree and I can't find another way to explain this

I wonder if he think 12 - 2, encompasses the whole hour of 2.xx and therefore take you up to 2.59, at which point it become 3.

He's fucking wrong mind.

Spiffingly · 30/04/2020 15:54

Oh my. He must, MUST know he's wrong, but is doubling down, cos he can't bear to be wrong. Also, the gaslighting would piss me off.

TheFuckingDogs · 30/04/2020 15:54

It’s 12 noon though not 12pm 😏

Soanywayhowsyoursexlife · 30/04/2020 16:03

Put him outside the shop with a stopwatch and he can see how long it's closed for.

BovaryX · 30/04/2020 16:04

OP,
I am curious to know what the diagram looked like?

steff13 · 30/04/2020 16:08

I need to see the diagram.

Also, I don't know if anyone has said this, but at 12pm set a kitchen timer for 2 hours, and then see what time it goes off? Or, at noon, you set a timer on your phone for two hours and he can set a timer on his phone for three hours, and then see which one goes off at 2pm.

LittlePesto · 30/04/2020 16:09

Clearly u have to both go and sit outside the shop with a stopwatch. Or drive there for 2.05pm and show him that it's open!

MintyMabel · 30/04/2020 16:09

He is clearly an idiot.

Have him start a stopwatch at 12 and end it at 2.

steff13 · 30/04/2020 16:09

It’s 12 noon though not 12pm

12 noon is 12pm.

NutellaFitzgerald · 30/04/2020 16:10

hes gaslighting you and this is a red flag. LTB

(im kidding).

i see on here a lot posters assuring us their daft or charmingly helpless dh is in fact clever enough to be senior in their job, but ive worked in plenty of places where a top level exec (e.g. my boss's boss's boss whoncan barely wip theirnown arse and instead rely on others (especially a PA) to mamage life for them.
just as pay is not equal to how hard someone works, it doesnt always correlate with how smart or effective someone is. certain types of organisations are worse than others for it.

NutellaFitzgerald · 30/04/2020 16:11

clearly I need a PA to type my posts....

Zilla1 · 30/04/2020 16:38

Steff13, As TheF says, I could be wrong but I understand there is no such thing as 12pm or indeed 12am, only 12 noon or 12 midnight. pm and am stand for after meridian and before meridian and the meridian is at noon so, by definition, 12 noon can't be before (am) or after (pm) the meridian.

ReluctantHillCrester · 30/04/2020 16:39

Have you got an analogue clock that you can take down off the wall and make it say 12, and then wind the hands round to 1pm so he can see 1 hour has past then again to 2 so another hour has past?

I help teach this in primary school, we had children converting analogue times to 24 hour digital clock times, this is year 4 so 8 and 9 year olds.

MayFayner · 30/04/2020 16:43

I love all the earnest responses involving elephants, clock hands and adding up sweets.

The man is a stubborn fool don’t waste a nanosecond more of your time on his muppetry.

SirGawain · 30/04/2020 16:44

The confusion about when it is 12pm is the reason why the military use the 24 hour clock and odd times like 23:59 and 00:01.
Most motor and house insurance policies also do this to avoid ambiguity.

AnneOfCloves · 30/04/2020 16:45

Is he learning impaired, bloody minded or is he unable to accept he makes mistakes?

Baconisgoodformeee · 30/04/2020 16:47

Is this a joke? There’s no possible way anyone could explain that minute by minute and not come up with 2

iklboo · 30/04/2020 16:47

Has he got fingers? Surely he can count on them?

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 30/04/2020 16:50

Worra knobhead.

Queenoftheashes · 30/04/2020 16:54

So have you shown him the thread yet ?

SliAnCroix · 30/04/2020 17:06

How many hours from 14.00 to 12.00 the next day!?
Does he think 21?

Jux · 30/04/2020 17:08

So he's counting the 12, his starting point, as 1 and then adding from 12-1 as 2 and then 1-2 as 3?

So if he looks at the clock face, he can't see that he puts his finger down on the 12 where he starts and says "1", then moves his finger to the 1 and says "2", finally moves his finger on to the 2 and says "3"?

Can he really not see that when he starts (at the 12) that no minutes have passed, no time? You have to start counting at 0 because 0 time has passed at the moment you lock the door and turn the sign to "closed".

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 30/04/2020 17:15

I think this should go into classics (even more do if we get to see the diagram)

Backtolifebacktoreality99 · 30/04/2020 17:21

Bless him I think maybe he could do with some more homeschooling! Definitely 2.

Backtolifebacktoreality99 · 30/04/2020 17:22

Get him to do some counting on a number line!
