To not be able to agree on this 'simple' question

Please help me answer, to DH, what has been an ongoing discussion for at least 4 weeks:

A shop closes at 12pm (midday) and reopens at 2pm the same day. 12pm on the dot, 2pm on the dot. How long is the shop closed for, in hours?

There's no riddle behind it, nothing to bend time, stop clocks etc etc

It's also not a trick question, we just can't agree and I can't find another way to explain this

LTB!!! 🤣

(Is there a possibility he’s just been winding you up for four weeks and he’s just on one massive chomp) PLEASE post the diagram!!

Muskeg · 30/04/2020 15:25

Hope he never has to take medication, he will be overdosing if he cannot tell how many hours it has been since his last dose Grin

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 30/04/2020 15:26

Show him a simple number line on BBC bitesize - he’s counting the 12 as if it doesn’t already exist, which it does since it’s the starting point.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/04/2020 15:26

@pooopypants - ask him this:

It is midday now, and I am going to watch a film that lasts 2 hours - what time will it finish?”

Hopefully he will say 2pm, and that will prove to him that you are right. If he says anything else - well, sorry, you are on your own!

merryhouse · 30/04/2020 15:28

IT IS NOT 12PM

pm stands for post meridian which means after noon.

it's either 12 noon or 12 midnight

(presumably the argument is being made that 12 midnight is 12 hours after noon)

saleorbouy · 30/04/2020 15:29

Your DH can come and work for me, I have a opportunity between 12 and 2 for two hours. I'll pay him £20 p/h so £40 a day, he's most welcome to crack on from 12-3pm.

TimeWastingButFun · 30/04/2020 15:29

Well it depends what time it closes at the end of the day. Obviously two hours at lunchtime but you don't say when it closes at the end of the day. Is this a wind up?

3luckystars · 30/04/2020 15:32

He knows he is wrong but he can't back down now.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 30/04/2020 15:33

I couldn't stay with someone so thick Grin

Morgan12 · 30/04/2020 15:34

12+2=14
14:00 hours is 2pm.
Does he understand it this way?

I don't get his logic at all. Wheres this extra hour coming from?

This would irrationally annoy me.

MulticolourMophead · 30/04/2020 15:34

I do hope he's winding you up, because this is so basic I'd wonder who taught him.

He is wrong, obviously. And needs to read this thread. And then you need to change your username Grin

MulticolourMophead · 30/04/2020 15:36

He knows he is wrong but he can't back down now.

I've known a good number of people like this, mostly men in my experience (looking at you, ex).

He needs to act like a grown up and admit he got it wrong.

Piglet89 · 30/04/2020 15:36

@pooopypants Is this a wind-up? Honestly - if he can’t work out very, very simple maths like this and still cannot understand it after your multiple explanations, he really is not “fairly intelligent”.

Drag0nflye · 30/04/2020 15:38

It’s times like this I dread being single. Knowing what’s out there... ⏰🤔

Silvercatowner · 30/04/2020 15:40

Your OH would be correct IF the shop remained closed during the second hour - ie between 2 and 3. But that's not what would happen so he's not correct.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 30/04/2020 15:41

Today 14:44 burritofan

When you say you've been arguing for four weeks... whose method are you using to count the weeks?

I proper snorted at this, thank you .

BelfryBat · 30/04/2020 15:41

I always think it's wrong to say 12pm when you mean 12 noon. It's 11am so I think it ought, strictly speaking, to be 12am. Midnight is 00, after all. I always write 12 noon and midnight to be absolutely clear.

However I haven't got a problem with the number of hours between 12.00 and 14.00.

FlamingoAndJohn · 30/04/2020 15:42

Can you share his working out?

JustinOtherdad · 30/04/2020 15:42

Just reverse the question. "If they close at 12 noon and open 1hr later, what time will they open? If they close at 12 noon and open 2hrs later what time will they open?"

Because by his logic the answer to the first question would be 12 noon.

If he continues to insist he's correct, kill him with a shovel.

AmIAStone · 30/04/2020 15:45

Oh wow, I really need to se his work out!

For when yo show his this thread, the answer is 2.

userabcname · 30/04/2020 15:45

Has he been at the sherry? Show us his diagram!

MulticolourMophead · 30/04/2020 15:46

Neither midnight, nor noon are am or pm. They are the meridians, so can't be ante meridian or post meridian.

Namenic · 30/04/2020 15:46

If you really need to, start a stopwatch at midday and see what it shows at 2pm. Basically he is starting to count from 1 rather than 0?

1forAll74 · 30/04/2020 15:47

TWO WHOLE HOURS

SimpleKindofLife · 30/04/2020 15:49

If he continues to insist he's correct, kill him with a shovel.

@JustinOtherdad harsh but fair! Grin
