mine are as follows

Stop sending out news reporters and their crew everywhere to report from ie the coast when there is a gale or outside a hospital when someone important is being treated

Sack Steve Wright who earns £500k a year and his sycophants

Dont broadcast all night stop at 1 am and restart at 530 am

I think part of the problem is that there is no single conclusive judgement that can be given as to which channels should stay and which should go. A lot of it depends on your own interests and circumstances as to what you will see as essential and what you will see as worthless.

Echoing what the PP above said, I hate sport and soaps and have no interest in them at all. I know this is saying the unsayable, but I'm not interested in David Attenborough's programmes either; however, I realise that it's a service for the whole country and not just for me - these are extremely popular programme categories, so who am I with my one licence fee to try and override the millions of licence-fee payers who would consider them of the utmost importance?

Maybe this is part of the whole issue: the BBC is trying to please everybody and wanting to maintain the provision of channels and programmes that only interest a minority of people, but which those minorities consider extremely important - such as the non-English language output, the Desi provision, the religious and niche arts programming. Purely by dint of viewer numbers, the commercial channels are not interested in these at all, except where their broadcasting licences require a certain provision for minority categories.

That said, maybe the BBC should actually then ditch the most popular programmes and leave them to the commercial channels, who can fly with them and gain a lot of revenue from them. The problem with that is that millions of people who are only bothered about the majority-interest programming (or maybe that PLUS one minority area e.g. how many people speak both Gallic AND Welsh?!) will then complain and ask exactly why they should bother paying the licence fee when it doesn't have anything to interest them!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/05/2020 19:56

They could just put the licence fee up by a couple of pounds?

You know, it's very easy to bash the BBC and suggest areas where it could make savings (as we've all been doing!), but if, in spite of all of its many faults, millions of licence-fee payers do value it overall (obviously many who have to buy a licence but don't want or use the BBC don't value it), then just putting it up by £2-5 per household (per YEAR, of course) is probably the least bad solution, all things considered.

Amortentia · 01/05/2020 21:43

The bbc also spends £13 million in output in Scottish Gaelic for the estimated 80,000 speakers. And an additional £25 million is spent on radio Scotland

Which is peanuts compared to the £320m raised by the licence fee in Scotland. As I mentioned previously they've already been in trouble for disproportionately spending less in Scotland. Add that to the tricky situation they've got themselves in regarding independence and you will understand why service or spending reductions in Scotland would be a political nightmare for them.

Cam2020 · 01/05/2020 21:45

Bin Eastenders.

Pelleas · 01/05/2020 23:59

Not a watcher of EastEnders, but they don't need to bin it - just cut it back to one or two shows a week.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/05/2020 00:25

Stop sending so many people to world sporting events like the Olympics/Rugby Would Cup/Football World Cup.
Merge regional radio stations eg we have BBC radio Bristol, BBC radio Wiltshire, BBC radio Somerset. However the TV equivalent BBC West
(including Points West the local news programme) covers a similar geographical area and works fine.

Don't vote conservative

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 02/05/2020 04:02

Cut management overhead and stop paying ridiculous salaries to the likes of Gary Lineker. That or just concentrate on BBC 1 & 2.

middleager · 02/05/2020 06:58

I can't believe Steve Wright is still on.

Or Mrs Brown's Boys.

Abreadsandwich · 02/05/2020 09:54

I was sure Jeremy Vine was on something like 750k and now hes on some morning show on C4 (I think ) as well.
Hes awful on the radio. I dont know who's idea it is for him to have a health expert in on a lunchtime show - you're eating a sandwich and suddenly theres some call in if you've ever had some medical problem that includes graphic descriptions of pus, pooh and other bodily functions! Hmm

derxa · 02/05/2020 11:00

I dont know who's idea it is for him to have a health expert in on a lunchtime show It's that bloody Dr Sarah Jarvis woman or 'Dr Doom' She's on his CH5 morning chat show most days atm. God knows when she ever does any 'doctoring'.

ExtraOnions · 02/05/2020 11:14

I worked there for a couple of years, until about 18 months ago. It’s an awful place to work, and they spend money like water. You have published the talent salaries there, which is fair enough. The number of people on £120/£130 grand a year... for doing very little is astonishing. People who have been there for donkeys years, who will never leave, because no one else will employ them, with skills that are years out of date. I could go in tomorrow and get rid of 10% of people, and you wouldn’t notice.

Bearnecessity · 02/05/2020 11:43

No one in the BBC should be earning more than £100,000 pa. No one, I don't care who they are or what they do.All of it is obscene.

PineappleDanish · 02/05/2020 11:51

The BBC Scotland Channel, watched by 3 men and a sheepdog, costs £32 million a year.

That's a decent start towards cost savings, not tinkering around reducing a few salaries which will make a drop in the ocean's difference.

Shut Radio Three. Amalgamate some BBC local radio - we have Radio Scotland covering the whole of the country, you don't need a separate station for every county. BBC Cornwall/Devon/Somerset/Bristol could easily become "BBC West Country" or whatever.

PineappleDanish · 02/05/2020 12:16

a they got their arses kicked when an investigation that found they spent way under what they should have been spending from money collected from Scottish TV licence payers compared to other parts of the UK.

But that's assuming that everyone in Scotland wants a huge amount of Scottish content. It's a balance. Yes I want to see Reporting Scotland. But I don't want to see a channel showing only Scottish-made programmes. There is also good stuff made in Scotland for the whole network - that The Nest drama was networked nationally, made in Scotland, with a scottish crew and cast. Also things like Shetland. What we don't need is to see Clare Grogan in a village hall in Wishaw cooking with packet noodles from the local corner shop. Or River City.

TooGood2BeTrue · 02/05/2020 12:25

Cap salaries at 150.000
Stop sending chefs around the world to cook on a fancy beach / in a field / street in Bangkok
Extend the use of video for interviewing people - it works remarkably well as lockdown is showing
Make BBC content available abroad as a subscription service

derxa · 02/05/2020 12:33

What we don't need is to see Clare Grogan in a village hall in Wishaw cooking with packet noodles from the local corner shop Grin I actually watched that. So grim.

Bin85 · 02/05/2020 12:37

Stop paying massive salaries

KaronAVyrus · 02/05/2020 12:50

That corner shop cooking programme was just total shite. I watched 10 mins in stunned disbelief.

Some programmes on the BBC Scotland have registered no viewers at all www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.scotsman.com/news/people/bbc-scotland-figures-branded-deplorable-after-21-shows-have-no-viewers-all-545437%3famp

DollyDoneMore · 02/05/2020 13:18

@seasonallysnowypeasant

*There is no need for BBC3. Stick to:

  • BBC1
  • BBC2
  • BBC World Service
  • CBBC
  • CBeebies
  • BBC News website
  • BBC Weather website
  • Radio 4*

I wonder which BBC services you use?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/05/2020 14:00

I was sure Jeremy Vine was on something like 750k and now hes on some morning show on C4 (I think ) as well.

I thought the same - bit puzzled by that. Seriously, though - how is Gary Lineker possibly worth so very much more than all the rest?

I don't want to see a channel showing only Scottish-made programmes.

The BBC is obsessed with regionalising everything, but I agree: I much prefer to watch or listen to the best/most interesting programmes, regardless of which home nation or region they were made in. The BBC website is the same: it keeps urging me to sign in so that it can prioritise my own nation in the articles and stories I see. I deliberately sign out now, unless using iPlayer or Sounds, as I don't want it to show me stories about missed bin collections in Hemel Hempstead in preference to actual important news that happens to originate from north or west of the border or across the sea.

user1471565182 · 02/05/2020 14:17

I dont know the ins and outs of the politics, but I've recently seen some excellent stuff from BBC Scotland which didnt make it to the main channels.

I should say overall I love the BBC ultimately, and they have a tricky job being sniped at by our arsehole newspaper media (the likes of the mail)

user1471565182 · 02/05/2020 14:17

BBC3 is entirely online.

PerfidiousAlbion · 02/05/2020 18:13

I think the BBC should focus its efforts on informing and educating the public. Every other station focuses on entertainment - there’s no need for the BBC to do this.

Yes, Fleabag was fantastic and Ive loved some of their entertainment and drama over the years but they cant do it all.

What they should do is focus on quality that’s not available elsewhere.

I was listening to Radio4 this morning and they had some kind of chat show on. Why? EVERY other station also has people chatting inanely for hours on end!

PLEASE GIVE US HIGH BROW CULTURE, EDUCATIONAL CONTENT AND INFORMATION - COS NOBODY ELSE WILL.
