To wonder why people aren’t more angry?

Throughout this whole crisis I have really been surprised by the level of acceptance from everyone in this country of the whole situation. I know we haven’t had much choice in the decisions made and we’re probably a very polite nation as a whole but we have been so quick to accept the arrival of a deadly virus and drastic changes to our lives, seemingly without complaint. Is no-one out there demanding to know how on earth this was all able to happen? We’ve faced the huge loss of human life worldwide and it is continuing, surely we are all entitled to get angry and demand answers? I see grieving families, children missing out on being with other children and not having an education, families being separated indefinitely, people’s mental health suffering and vulnerable people potentially at risk and I feel so frustrated and angry. If we got fired up about climate change, why not this??

I don't have the mental energy to be very angry. What would be the point? I do feel very pissed off with the way Tory ideological austerity has cut the NHS and other public services to the bone, and that now we're going to pay for it, both in lives and in taxation for years to come. I feel pissed off at the mishandling in the early weeks by BoJo and his chums, and how people whine "Don't make it so political! Let's get behind Boris!" etc. I get pissed off that China hid what was going on very early and is almost certainly lying even now about their casualty figures. But I try not to think about it too much as my anger doesn't change anything and just makes my bad acid reflux much worse.

I never vote Tory anyway, so that won't change. I am considering getting involved in local Labour activism, though, once this has passed (if I survive).

leckford · 30/04/2020 08:33

People are rioting in France, but is a daily occurrence there. If not the yellow vests the people living in the baneliues.

Insideimsprinting · 30/04/2020 08:33

Anger and fury doesn't get anyone anywhere.
Feeling it is one thing voicing it is not good because what your angry at gets lost in the anger and all people will see is an angry person. Nobody likes an angry person.

Constructively dealing with resolving what's making you angry and working towards getting answered or a solution properly may get results. Rioting shouting showing frustrating makes people switch off from the noise.
Even thus thread, I didn't bother readi g the angry op, or the following angry ones, I did get the gist from the calmer, more well thought out ones.

JasonPollack · 30/04/2020 08:36

Have we gotten all fired up about climate change? There's been very little action on climate change, a much greater threat to life than Covid-19.

TheABC · 30/04/2020 08:37

I'm in it for the long haul.
This is just phase one of the Coronavirus crisis. The "shock and awe" phase, if you like.
Phase two is where we start to viscerally feel the scale of disruption and loss, from visiting graves to job hunts, boarded up shops and a struggling economy.

People are going to get very, very angry.

There's at least another year of living with this virus ahead of us. Even if we stamp it out in the UK, it's only just getting started in Africa, India and the Americas. WHO is saying the peak is still 3 months off in many countries. Throw in the economic fallout and you are looking at a very ropey time ahead.

peoplewhoannoyyou · 30/04/2020 08:37

Who should I be angry at? Presumably the Chinese for unleashing this virus on the world. The trouble is, most Chinese people would probably rather the virus hadn't transferred to humans. Being angry at all Chinese people is as idiotic as islamists being angry at "the West".

Don't get me wrong, I think China as a country needs to be held to account, and if they had any decency they would pay compensation to all those affected (not just bereaved families, but people who've lost their business or job or are on reduced hours) - but I am 100% certain this won't be forthcoming, and getting angry at the Chinese - either collectively or individually - isn't going to change that.

Cottonanimals · 30/04/2020 08:37

I don't feel angry because this is a virus. No one is responsible for it (please no one say the Chinese are - they're not.) It is an airborne illness. Authorities are trying to work out how to handle it. Unknown quantity - they don't know. Whether they take an approach leaning towards saving the economy or saving as many people as possible, they can't please everyone. Different people have different experiences of the effect of the illness and adjust what they perceive is best practice accordingly.

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 08:40

Who do you suggest we get angry at though OP? It's not like we can take to the streets with placards and protest is it? British people are not like Americans

I'm pissed off but who exactly do I direct my anger to and where? I give my thoughts on how the Government have handled this (appallingly btw) but should I stand outside Parliament and say that? Or maybe the Chinese Embassy?

BeardedMum · 30/04/2020 08:41

There is a difference between saying you are angry with China and saying you are angry with the Chinese. China tried to cover it up just remember the Chinese whistleblower medics I think some died.

Straycatstrut · 30/04/2020 08:42

I think the feeling of sadness massively overrides the anger. The huge overwhelming feeling of pride and fear when I think what it must be like inside hospitals.

I HAVE felt anger at idiots not social distancing properly. Delivery drivers entering my home and leaning right in close to me?!

Frustration that I can't even go shopping for ingredients because my ex walked out on us and I have to stay with my boys 24/7. I'm also overwhelmed trying to educate them both. I KNOW it's not THAT important and they'll pick up where they left out at school - but my 7yo loves his school work and he's bored rigid without that, and his exercise.

It's all so exhausting and confusing and frustrating and sad. Anger is in there at times but it's not the dominant emotion.

oakleaffy · 30/04/2020 08:42

The French can be a very Militant and protesting Nation if something annoys them..But they appear to have accepted their 'Lockdown' with good grace.
I am really surprised that we as a Nation blundered into this.
I was feeling uneasy back in January, having briefly read about Spanish Flu over the years, and knowing air travel can seed a virus fast, was asking a local pharmacist if they were worried.
''No'' came the reply.
Every week, I'd say ''any more info about this Sars type virus?''
and was advised ''Don't worry....It won't come here, and even if it does, it will be controlled''

Fast forward a few weeks and corinavirus notices were on the door...a few weeks later Social distancing was in place....
I didn't say ''told you!!!''

But if non medics were concerned...why the hell weren't the govt more wide awake and on the ball??

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 30/04/2020 08:42

No JasonPollack, I don't believe we behave. I think that many people who will loudly bray about it, having watched/listened to the latest Attenbrorough, expecting others to effect change. They don't and won't accept their own personal freedoms and choices to be curtailed in any way.

Humans are self-serving, always have been.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 30/04/2020 08:43

I don't believe we have, I meant.

Sparkles333 · 30/04/2020 08:43

The only thing i am angry about is the disgusting Wet Markets as that's what they are saying is the most likely cause of this. Why its been allowed to go on for all these years is beyond me. The cruelty these animals face is heartbreaking and the conditions it is done in is what causes the spread of diseases and viruses. I just can't believe this type of thing exists in society. When will it be stopped if covid-19 is not a big enough wake up call i dont know what is. Its not like its the first time an outbreak has been linked to the wet markets. They need to ban them.

Walkaround · 30/04/2020 08:43

Hmm. Getting angry results in defensiveness and lessons not being learned. It is important not to get angry when sifting through the evidence of what happened, as staying calm and non-judgemental encourages honesty and collaboration, which is essential if you actually want to learn anything useful.

SweetPetrichor · 30/04/2020 08:45

What's the point of getting angry? This is an unprecedented situation and hindsight is 20/20.

oakleaffy · 30/04/2020 08:47

Hospital staff DS knows says ICU are really busy....but the rest of the hospital is empty.........
I am sad and angry about cancer and other patients who will be collateral damage, sacrificed at the alter of Covid lockdown.
Plus the economic impact.

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 08:49

The only thing i am angry about is the disgusting Wet Markets as that's what they are saying is the most likely cause of this

A wet market is just a market that sells fresh food in China. There are many videos showing this on youtube and on social media. I think you mean markets where live animals are sold. China will never ban 'wet markets' so you all know. But it does need to be pushed that they no longer sell live animals for food

Clavinova · 30/04/2020 08:53

I'm also shocked and pissed off at the way clapping for NHS, Johnson being ill and having a baby are used to deflect criticism from the government. ...
The double standards in how Johnson is presented - a woman... having just divorced her husband with cancer would not have been given the same treatment.

But you are deflecting with the mention of his ex-wife's cancer. She commenced divorce proceedings against him (quite rightly so) before her brief spell with cancer - he didn't callously divorce a woman with cancer.

Walkaround · 30/04/2020 08:55

And being angry about “wet markets” is another example of unhelpful anger. It’s wet markets which have a sideline trade in live, exotic (illegally traded) wild animals that are thought to be the issue, not the basic fresh food wet markets.

oakleaffy · 30/04/2020 08:56

@Sparkles333
Totally agree about wet markets...but they are all over the place, in Indonesia too....The belief that these unfortunate animals impart some ''magical healing'' into the eater is just ignorance. Education is the only way.
Tiger bone, Pangolin, Bat won't cure your impotence or skin complaint....
It will be hard to stop the eating of these animals /reptiles entirely, as there will be a black market if banned.

JediJim · 30/04/2020 08:57

People are dying due to both the virus and other illnesses.People are losing their jobs not knowing how they are going to put food in the table. How can they get another job?
This disease was brought here by people travelling into the UK. Someone or something must have caused this virus, no one seems that determined to trace or pinpoint the cause.
Meanwhile Col Tom is dominating the news with songs and military flybys, whilst lots of us don’t know if we’ll have a job next month to feed our kids.
I don’t blame him by the way, I respect what he’s achieved I just think he’s become the star of a PR stunt that he went along with.

Cottonanimals · 30/04/2020 08:57

Aren't live animals are sold as food throughout Europe too? I've been to local markets in South of France and Italy where live ducks and chickens are packed into tiny crates, turtles swim in tiny washing up bowls. Sad Crabs and lobsters and shrimp crawl around on ice in UK markets.

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2020 08:58

Getting angry changes nothing. What are we supposed to do, go out into the streets and wave our fists.

The correct answer is to solve the issue then prevent it occurring again, as far as possible.

WhatWouldJasonBourneDo · 30/04/2020 08:58

I think the countries in Europe are just in the trenches right now. Anger may come later. It remains to be seen how/whether the political leaders will take up the mantle.

China is a very powerful nation!

The Australian government is starting to push for inquiry. News reports claim that China has responded by essentially threatening to annihilate its economy. The US is agreeing of course, and they're already "investigating", whatever that means.
