To ask if there's anyone here who plays/teaches guitar?

I've decided that for half an hour every day during my son's afternoon nap I'm going to play guitar. Total beginner. Can play a few chords (badly). I'm very musical. Grade 8 singing, grade 5 in two other instruments. Guitar is totally different though and am so bad at it. I would love to sit in front of a teacher but as a single mum who works even when lockdown is over it would be difficult. I'm going to teach myself! I'm up for the challenge, but have no idea where to start. Can anyone advise?

DH used one of the 'For Dummies' books. There'll be some beginners apps out there too. He's pretty good now. Took him a couple of months to learn the basics and a few tunes.

If you're musical and can play other instruments then you should just play around with it and you'll easily get the hang of it. Nothing special required. Google chord fingering positions etc, practice them with songs. You'll find most songs actually use the same three chords in varying combinations so it'll be easy to get practice! Sing along too. Once you've worked through the discomfort of holding the strings down you'll enjoy it more.
This was how I approached it anyway, I am musical and play other instruments. I picked the guitar up very quickly - it's an instrument you can play without being exceptionally skilled so you should be able to get enjoyment out of it in no time.

The really hard bit to start with is getting used to changing chords quickly without your fingers hurting. There are lots of good tutorials on YouTube. Start with a super easy song like "Horse With No Name". Easy chords, same 2 the whole way through from memory, if you are a singer and have someone who will sing along with you you can get some great harmonies going...enjoy!
