Captain Tom - What's the fuss about?

Okay I am not knocking Captain Tom at all, he is a brilliant brilliant man.

Although AIBU to wonder why our country has gone bananas over him? All he did was walk laps of his garden, people fundraise everyday and do a lot more! Think of all the marathon runners!

Whenever he is interviewed I think he also seems a bit confused why everyone is making so much fuss too!

I just don't get why our country has become obsessed with him??!

OP posts:

Never heard the word sheeple before! Great word and sums this up completely. It's not a great word since it shows a complete lack of understanding of the behaviour of sheep. Sheep are determined buggers who are very difficult to organise.

supercee · 30/04/2020 09:59

There are hero's living amongst us all in all of our towns and villages, why don't we all take some time to celebrate those people too.

When they raise 30 million I'm sure they'll get a wee shout out.

Happy birthday Colonel Tom!

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 30/04/2020 10:04

OP I wouldnt bother asking really..if you don;t get it now you never will.....thats all.

MintyMabel · 30/04/2020 11:08

When they raise 30 million I'm sure they'll get a wee shout out.

That’s your bar? Seriously?

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 11:18

I think it's odd that the condescending sheeple don't care about Tom's welfare. That he's being exploited by the media and probably walking himself into an earlier grave. Poor chap so long as he keeps the masses distracted.

MintyMabel · 30/04/2020 11:41

It's not a great word since it shows a complete lack of understanding of the behaviour of sheep

It is also a lazy debate tactic designed to try and show some kind of superiority, and apparently negating the need for critical thinking.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 11:53

But it does succinctly describe the behaviour of a certain group of people 😉

Dalamalama · 30/04/2020 12:37

My nan at 85 years old used to go round all her elderly neighbours and make sure they were ok, even though she wasn't in the best of health herself, she's my hero even though she didn't raise 30 million.

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 14:52

probably walking himself into an earlier grave

He’s 100! That ship sailed several decades ago.

LadyLindaT · 30/04/2020 15:03

I read today that all the stamps from his Birthday cards are being donated to the RNIB for fundraising, which is pleasing.
I do wish, however, that all these things would be properly funded and didn't always have to be so "begging bowl".

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 15:03

You know what I mean! No 100 year old needs to be doing that. Why shorten what's left of his life. How selfish.

Josette77 · 30/04/2020 15:13

How condescending. He seems to be enjoying what's left of his life. Don't talk about his like he's a child who can't make decisions for himself.
And OP you already answered your own question. When he comes on the telly you tear up. He's a lovely man who has does something good.

DeeCeeCherry · 30/04/2020 15:15

I hope he's pleased and happy with his achievement. Great man.

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 15:18

I doubt he really does but plenty of people making him feel like he has to carry on! Exploitation of an old man.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 15:36

Why are you so negative about such a positive story.Over 30 million for our wonderful NHS staff. Is there anything that you are positive about?

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 15:40

You clearly have a Captain Tom issue. The whole country recognises all our NHS staff every Thursday night at 8pm and the media is full of hundreds of people being recognised. He is the only one that’s raised 30 million and I for one applaud everything we hear about him

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 15:41

What news channels are you watching?

derxa · 30/04/2020 15:42

Exploitation of an old man. Grin He is one of those people MN hates. An extrovert. He's enjoying every minute of it.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 15:43

I think your the poor one.You have completely missed the point that Captain Tom has stated throughout.

cardibach · 30/04/2020 15:43

@brassbrass you know he’d decided to do this as a family bet/joke before it became an ‘Event’? Keeping mobile is actually really good for old people.
OP, of course it’s to do with the media, or nobody outside his village would know about him. But there’s a reason that the media picked him and people have taken to him.
He shows a fabulous, optimistic spirit that we all need right now (tomorrow will be a good day etc).
He is, as you say, very modest - people don’t like a bighead.
His history makes a great story.

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 15:44

How selfish

In what way is choosing to live the tiny amount of life he has left how he chooses and raising £30 million selfish? Mind boggling. MN has used selfish so many times in the last few weeks people have completely lost track of what it means.

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 15:51

@alsohuman we’re you born so negative

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 15:52

Wtf?

Johng133 · 30/04/2020 15:53

@brassbrass I think you’ve said enough about Capt Tom today. Now can you go away please.Your messages are depressing

BlueBrian · 30/04/2020 15:53

It's pretty obvious that the brains behind this operation is his daughter, she's spotted that he's got the full set to win tabloid bingo, he's a war veteran, it's his hundredth birthday, it just goes on, and she's milked it for all it's worth.
