Hi, we really like the name Obie for our new baby boy, that was until we came across an old post on here and some people saying its a no no due to Star Wars. Is it still frowned upon because of this or is it more acceptable now??

I love Star Wars (I have a dog named after a character!) but I wouldn’t name a human child after a Star Wars character.

My friends brother called their daughter Leia and openly admit to this fact.

If you like the name, use it.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 29/04/2020 11:13

As soon as I saw it I thought of Star Wars.

neverknewsomany · 29/04/2020 11:13

I'd definitely think Star Wars if I heard it. What about Albie?

MouthBreathingRage · 29/04/2020 11:14

I know someone with the name, but in English speaking cultures it's definitely more associated with Star Wars. It's too far ingrained in popular cultural now.

Unless your thinking of 'wan' for a middle name I say use it 👍- it's different and I think it's nice

Want2beme · 29/04/2020 11:19

I vaguely knew someone who was known as Obie. His full name was Oberstein. It's Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars, isn't it? I have no idea about these films and wouldn't have a clue about this character.

Totally irrelevant, but I also love the name Abi, short for AbrahamGrin

LEELULUMPKIN · 29/04/2020 11:19

Sounds more like a pets name tbh. I have never watched Star Wars but I immediately thought of Sir Alec Guinness.

SerenDippitty · 29/04/2020 11:30

People might think it's short for Obadiah.

Winterwoollies · 29/04/2020 11:32

I love Star Wars and as as such, it is clearly a different name. He is Obi-Wan. It is hyphenated. And he is a legendary Jedi Master, so not a bar person to be named after should you so wish.

So, Obie (means heart I think) is a completely different name and it’s cute. So you crack on and do your thing. This is your baby.

Not a bad* person.
