I don't think it's wanky if it's called the old whatever or it's in a village with houses dotted along little roads and they don't have numbers. They must be a nightmare for delivery people to find. My house I lived in when I grew up had a name and a number and it wasn't until I was an adult I realised my parents put the name on it and officially it's just registered as the number and road name

Not far from us a new house was built at the v beginning of a road, before No1. It is called Minus One. It really should be Zero.

Gemma2019 · 30/04/2020 22:54

My old house was number 2 but was renamed Two Hoots years before we bought it. I quite liked it.

WingBingo · 30/04/2020 22:55

My house has a name. It’s on a country lane so we have no house number.

How can that be wanky?

I guess maybe when you have a house number but then add a name?

I live at The Paddocks.

Sparklesocks · 30/04/2020 22:58

Ours is Oak Cottage

lockdownlowdown · 30/04/2020 22:59

Rose cottage

Runbikeswim · 30/04/2020 23:03

Parkholme- we are very near a park that has been here as long as the house.

I live in a village where there is a mixture of names and numbers. Our lane has a bonkers numbering system where the first house on one side is 11 and then it goes up as expected (11, 13, 15 etc) until 35 then it jumps to 71 and then 103. On the opposite side it goes 4, 32, 34.... Our house has a name and a number. The name is of a part of the country many miles away. Just the place, not followed by "house" or "cottage" . We never use the name just the number. But if we lived in an old cottage where the name had a history to it then I would use th name.

Ours has a name and no number. It was originally the post office so when we moved in we thought about renaming it The Old Post Office. Except someone else in the village has called their house that, despite their house never having been the post office which I find properly bizarre. In the end we just stuck with the original name, which is perfectly fine and appropriate.

I was just baffled as to why anyone would call their house The Old Post Office when it isn't...

ducksback · 30/04/2020 23:22

I live on a lane where no house has a number and they all have names. In our case the name od the house goes back nearly 300 years so how is that 'wanky'?

Mumthedogsbeensick · 30/04/2020 23:24

There's a property called "2nd star on the right and straight on 'til morning" in the Land of Green Ginger in Hull city centre. I always thought it was magical when I was a child.

ducksback · 30/04/2020 23:25

Love that! But I adore Peter Pan as I am a big kid!
