As simple to take as a pregnancy test

News about a company which hopes to roll out a Covid 19 test shortly. Reporter said "easy to take as a pregnancy test".

AIBU to think the next few months are going to see thousands of thread asking whether people can see a line, what about if it's put in the direct light, could it be an evaporation line, what about if they test again in the evening, are the cheap tests really any good or do they need a gold plated one, is that a line, no is that REALLY a line, do you think there's a line???

Ha. Yes, though tbh even if it says in capitals "YES YOU HAVE PLAGUE LOCK YOURSELF IN" people will still be posting saying "can you see this? do you think it's right? what should I dooooooo?"

Apirateslifeforme · 28/04/2020 13:48

Grin I'll be the first to post these questions lol!

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/04/2020 13:49

Oo I hope so

Grin
Colouringinbook · 28/04/2020 13:52

Yeah everyone will be cracking the test case open and upping the saturation on the pictures to check it's correct.

Soubriquet · 28/04/2020 13:53

Argh no!!!

We need one like clear blue. One that says no you’re not positive, yes you are to stop people imagining a line

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 28/04/2020 13:59

But the digital tests aren’t as sensitive! Try again in a few days with FMU!

Lindy2 · 28/04/2020 14:06

How about the pregnancy tests with smiley faces.

Smiley face = no Covid19 Smile
Not smiley face = Covid19 Sad

PineappleDanish · 28/04/2020 14:10

I have no idea whether the proposed test was a "pee on the stick and see if there's a line" type of test. But it just made me laugh that it was presented as this super simple, idiot proof type of test when you see the knots people tie themselves into over a pregnancy test.

I think the person that coined that phrase was definitely a man Grin

Will we get people testing several times a day too, just in case? And continuing to do so even after they get whatever result they were hoping for.

Maybe people can stock up on cheap tests and save the good (expensive) ones for when they’re really certain.

And we can get line progression images and lots of additional anxiety related to that.

ReadilyAvailable · 28/04/2020 14:14

Are the smiley tests not ovulation ones, @Lindy2?

There are flashing smileys too as well as solid ones. Just to make it less straightforward.

Stronger76 · 28/04/2020 14:16

I can see a line!!

gazingahead · 28/04/2020 14:17

I did one of these tests a couple of days ago. I had to prick my finger and pour the blood onto the test stick then wait ten minutes. One line, test worked, second line, antibodies detected, third line, active COVID.

One of us had antibodies but the line was faint, so there was squinting.

Rubywhox · 28/04/2020 14:17

Hahaha so true 😂 there’s a test thread going at the moment with the most dark, obvious positive second line and the OP is still unsure!

Lindy2 · 28/04/2020 14:18

ReadilyAvailable It could well be ovulation tests. I guess a Smile when you didn't want to be pregnant wouldn't be great. It's been a long time since I used either as my youngest is now 9.

A flashing Covid19 test sounds a bit alarming! Confused

ReadilyAvailable · 28/04/2020 14:26

so there was squinting.

Of course there has to be squinting. And pissing about with photoshop.

Maybe even speculation about whether the pink or blue dye is more reliable.

The fact there are three lines clearly opens up the possibility of getting active Covid and continually retesting til it’s just antibodies.

lockdownlowdown · 28/04/2020 14:52

Oh god no...

gazingahead · 28/04/2020 16:20

"The fact there are three lines clearly opens up the possibility of getting active Covid and continually retesting til it’s just antibodies"

Would you mind explaining why you say this? Surely antibodies are different to virus?

NaNaNaNaNaNaBaNaNa · 28/04/2020 16:25

Don't let general the general public take their own tests! There are going to be so many false negatives because people just didn't do it right.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 28/04/2020 16:27

@gazingahead

People will presumably keep testing if they’re positive for CV until they get the antibodies positive.

ReadilyAvailable · 28/04/2020 17:31

The antibodies are (I think) what you’re left with after you’ve fought off Covid-19. So you’d get people testing repeatedly until they just see the antibodies.

BirdieFriendReturns · 28/04/2020 17:37

I normally get wee all over myself.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/04/2020 17:38

Or flipping it into negative.
