dishwasher opening

We always set the dishwasher last thing at night, but a few times now I've come down in the morning and found the cycle complete but the door ajar. Weird but I thought maybe DP had already been down - I'd have known if he had been really as we share a bed and get up with the baby in the morning. Anyway, I asked him about it last night and he said he hadn't been opening it, and had wondered the same about me.

I have a big workload at the moment and ended up staying up til 3ish blitzing it (WFH and baby is an exhausting combination) and sleeping on the sofa so as not to disturb anyone. Came into the kitchen and saw the dishwasher was open! I know DP didn't come downstairs and I'm sure I'd have noticed if someone broke in to gently open our dishwasher.

I checked our manual and googled it, and I don't believe our model has an auto open function. This is very weird! isn't it? Or do I just have too much time on my hands? Can anyone explain this?

Ours started doing it and there was a loose screw on the inside edge of the door that I think must have been expanding when it got really hot and putting pressure on the close mechanism. Screwed it back in and it stopped. It still works it’s way out occasionally.

ooh thanks @ButDoYouAvocado. It's probably that. How mundane! I was hoping for a ghost tbh.

Similar to avocado ours started doing this when the hinges were on their way out - the heat and pressure was giving them a little bit too much to cope with, although we could initially still shut the front when cold.

redwoodmazza · 28/04/2020 11:08

Ours pops open when it has finished the cycle. It helps the stuff to dry off. Ours is a Miele.

teqcar · 28/04/2020 11:15

We always set the dishwasher last thing at night,

Put it on in the evening so it's finished and switched off before you go to bed. Any electrical faults or jammed things could be catastrophic if you are sleeping.

Oysterbabe · 28/04/2020 11:16

Ours pops open when finished. Are you sure yours doesn't?

BarbarAnna · 28/04/2020 11:17

Ours pops open too, on cycles which also dry. Doesn’t on fast 30 minute washes.

Soapytoad · 28/04/2020 12:34

Do you have dogs by any chance? Mine open ours 😡

Northernsoullover · 28/04/2020 12:37

I'm with teq here. You should never ever ever run appliances when you are in bed.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/04/2020 12:39

we have had a couple do this...the catches get iffy and they pop open. I used to wedge mine shut with a kitchen chair

BubblyBarbara · 28/04/2020 13:10

You should never ever ever run appliances when you are in bed.

Hmm, while they are not “appliances” per se, your boiler, underfloor heating or pool pump are just as electrically or chemically dangerous as a dishwasher yet you have to run them while asleep.

TeddyIsaHe · 28/04/2020 13:11

How many people in the UK have a pool pump and underfloor heating Grin

Riggle · 28/04/2020 13:24

Our Bosch one does this on certain cycles to help with drying - it’s not a fault on ours.

HandfulOfFlowers · 28/04/2020 13:26

Leave it a bit longer and see if it goes a step further and unloads itself 😀

GladAllOver · 28/04/2020 13:30

Many people have a 'white meter' or other contract to run appliances at night on lower price electricity.
I don't see a problem providing you have proper smoke detectors.

DoTheNextRightThing · 28/04/2020 13:31

Don't listen to sensible PPs. It's definitely a poltergeist. You'll be finding your ironing board has gone missing next.

PatriciaHolm · 28/04/2020 13:32

Useless ghost if so - they could at least unload for you!

I can't leave mine at night because the sodding thing BEEPS incessantly when finished unless you go pat it and tell it well done open it.

Candy150 · 28/04/2020 13:35

Ours pops open when it’s finished it’s cycle too. It scared me the first few times then we got used to it.

BirdieFriendReturns · 28/04/2020 13:36

It’s probably just a demonic entity.

ladycarlotta · 28/04/2020 14:07

Birdie Friend, I hope!

Ours IS a Bosch but I don't think it's meant to pop open, or at least it isn't consistent in its popping. I shall be pissed off if it's broken already as we only got it a few months ago but the baby likes to help unload it and has once or twice climbed on the door in her enthusiasm admitting that will probably void the warranty. Let's say it's ghosts.

Noted that it is a bad idea to run it at night.

nb AND ALL OUR 360 CUPS HAVE GONE MISSING. So it might be a thirsty poltergeist.

Birdie Friend says it’s a demon. Sad
