To think this is a lot for breakdown cover?

waveafterwaveafterwave · 27/04/2020 11:10

The RAC has quoted me £175 to renew my breakdown cover for the year.

This seems very steep to me so I will probably cancel. Before I do, I just wondered what other people pay for breakdown and if there is any advantage to staying with RAC over other companies?

Well it depends doesn't it? Do you drive a 35 year old Range Roger? Or a brand new Ford Focus? How many miles do you do? Is it commuting? Do you live in London or the Highlands a million miles from the nearest breakdown van? Get some comparitive quotes and phone them to negotiate. I pay £138 a year in monthly installments of £11.50 a month

Burpalot · 27/04/2020 11:15

Do they even take into account your vehicle? If not then they're charging you a lot more than me

BarbaraofSeville · 27/04/2020 11:16

Yes, it's far too much. You want Autoaid or similar. Same service, a third of the price.

Moneysavingexpert on breakdown cover.

Burpalot · 27/04/2020 11:17

I've just had a look at their website and the most basic package has just quoted me £90. Where are you getting your quote?

PhoneLock · 27/04/2020 11:35

Well it depends doesn't it? Do you drive a 35 year old Range Roger?

We have a 48 year old Range Rover and a 65 year old Land Rover and it still seems steep to me. There are better value options out there.

Having said that, we are with the RAC. It's a bundled benefit through a bank account.

LakieLady · 27/04/2020 11:37

It certainly seems like a lot to me but I always get mine included with my insurance.

This year, it was for £36 my 20-year old car. It includes recovery and breakdown at home (Sussex).

When the battery died (the original battery!) and I had to call them out, it was the RAC that came.

My insurance is with Hastings Direct, and the RAC man said the RAC is contracted to them and do all their callouts.

None of which will help you if your insurance isn't due for renewal, I realise, but maybe worth bearing in mind for the future.

LakieLady · 27/04/2020 11:39

Sorry, should have said: I found the deal through one of the comparison sites, I always check out at least 2 at renewal time.

LakieLady · 27/04/2020 11:42

And another afterthought: I always pay in one hit, as the pay by instalments seems expensive to me.

I didn't even know you could pay monthly for breakdown cover, tbh.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 27/04/2020 12:26

Thanks for this thread, my breakdown cover runs out today so was a helpful reminder

Mine was £80 with green flag with home start and onward travel, but my car is over 10 years old

CoffeeBeansGalore · 27/04/2020 12:26

Green flag are cheaper than RAC & AA. I have been with both in the past and they continually put up the price year after year if you stay with them. The AA tried to charge my renewal at £275 last year. I had been with them 3 years, no call outs. I rang to say I wasn't happy & they reduced it to £230. I cancelled & went to Green Flag - £82.50 for the year, same cover as RAC.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 27/04/2020 12:29

AutoAid is good and recommended a lot on Moneysavingexpert.
Annoyingly they have put the price up for me by £20 this year but it is still very good value.

RandomMess · 27/04/2020 12:30

Always shop around I've been with auto-aid and Green Flag recently as much better priced than AA/RAC when looking at like for like cover.

BeansOnToast4T · 27/04/2020 12:31

I would also highly recommend autoaid. Been with them for a few years and called them out twice, they were excellent.

Hingeandbracket · 27/04/2020 12:33

Depends what the cover is - there are a lot of options and add-ons. I have cancelled my RAC cover as I couldn't afford it - but not going anywhere at present.

My RAC covered me whatever I was driving so may have been more costly.

Hagisonthehill · 27/04/2020 12:37

Green flag have been £78 last year.Due for renewal.I usually check on the web site and the phone them to see what they can offer near that. They usually match and have sometimes done better. My car is about 10 years old.

Sparklywolf · 27/04/2020 12:39

I just had my RAC renewal through and it had increased over 10% since last year so I phoned them and they instantly reduced the quote by 25% and threw in some bonuses.

Give them a ring and say you're looking af switching, bet it comes down significantly

Papergirl1968 · 27/04/2020 12:42

Autonational Rescue. I pay around £50 for at home and roadside assistance. That is with a three year old car but I paid similar price with my last car even when it was ten.

Neverender · 27/04/2020 12:45

Phone them and say you're going to leave unless they reduce the price. They will.

ScarletAnemone · 27/04/2020 12:49

I pay £30 a year with Britannia. I had to call them out once and they were fine.

Ginisatonic · 27/04/2020 12:54

Agree with the others who said phone them up. They will reduce the price.
I’m currently with Green Flag. I’d never go back to RAC due to the appalling bad service I got from them when I needed to use them.

WitchitaMickey · 27/04/2020 12:54

I've found RAC cover to be not worth the paper its written on. Last time I phoned them recently, stranded on the side of a dual carriageway in winter at dusk, 28 weeks pg with a 4 year old in the back of the car and they said it would be 4 hours!! I told them to cancel it and took out cover with the AA - who were there within 20 mins. My DF also uses AA and has never had to wait more than an hour for a callout (he drives for a living so has more breakdowns than your average road user). I couldn't believe RAC could be so shoddy. I also know someone who waited 8 hours on the side of a motorway for them overnight and in the end had to pay a private tow as RAC never showed up. This was only a few months ago.

My AA cover was around £120 for a full year I think.

hellsbellsmelons · 27/04/2020 12:56

I have RAC breakdown cover as part of my insurance.
I had to use it recently for the first time in decades and I have to say, RAC were fantastic!!!
Have a look at Greenflag, they are usually very good and cheaper than RAC and AA.

safariboot · 27/04/2020 13:04

It's like insurance. Or broadband. They'll rip you off with the renewal because they think they can get away with it.

Find better quotes, then if you want to stick with the RAC, call and negotiate. Be prepared to cancel and go elsewhere if they won't give a good price. If you want to switch, just cancel and take out with a different provider.

beebeedandelion · 27/04/2020 13:09

I pay £30 a year including home start, I used them once and they were there in half an hour despite me saying it wasn't urgent. That's with action recovery.

Pika09 · 27/04/2020 13:11

I get green flag full cover free with my bank account. Quickest response was 30 minutes and slowest response was 1.5 hours. They also have a handy app to track the breakdown truck.
