Campsite Deposit

I paid £75 for a caravan site booking to take place in June 2020 - this is obviously cancelled now due to the virus. I asked for my deposit back but the owners have said they are struggling and have applied to the Government for help and cannot give me my deposit back right now. I am undecided as to what I think about this and wondered what other people thought? I have told them not to worry and I can wait but actually - I would have thought anyone's deposit should have been kept in a holding account until the booking had actually happened.

Maybe they don't have a magic wand?

They may be undecided whether they will honour the booking at a later stage. Is it a big concern or a small family run affair?

Is it Camping & Caravanning club?

That comes under Martin Whotsits forbearance, I think.

If you can afford it give them time to work through it. We have a holiday booked, deposit paid. I fully expect to have to come to some compromise over it.

We have taken up the offer for our campsite deposit (in France) to be used at a future date. Delighted they have offered this as I wouldnt expect them to have the money handy to refund. Remember, they are making no money during the winter and still have insurance and maintenance fees to pay. The money does not just sit in an account waiting in case.

Have you thought to ask if you can use it in August or next year instead? It's more viable for them to do this than give it back as if the money is spent already it's like they are giving you a discount of £75 which is cheaper and easier than a refund. And you still have a holiday to look forward to.

A private company - I don't think its massive.

No - it isn't. They have returned my deposit for another and different booking.

That's fair enough I think.
