Do you think Cornwall will be 'open' in July?

Hi all.

A purely speculative post to gauge opinions, as I know we don't know, don't have a crystal ball, etc etc.

We have booked a self catering holiday cottage near Bude for the first 10 days of July. We live in the South East, so it's about 5 hours drive to get there on a good day. We have a dog so would need to stop at a service station at least once.

As part of general future-focused conversation, DH and I are ruminating about

1: will we be 'allowed' to go
2: if we are, would we want to anyway?
3: if it's 'allowed', will the Bude community welcome us or hate us?
4: will the tourist industry want revenue or not?

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Anyone else having similar discussions, and if so, what are you thinking?

We are going to Cornwall in August if allowed. I’m keen to spend on the Cornish economy.

Any sign of illness and I’ll be going home. There’s no way I’d impose on Treliske Hospital, at times like this, it’s for the locals.

Doubletrouble99 · 26/04/2020 20:44

We are in Scotland and had a week booked in Looe on the 1st week in July. cancelled it and rebooked for next year. just no point in thinking there are going to be any places open or worth visiting by then.

frumpety · 26/04/2020 20:48

I don't think it matters if some people in Cornwall voted to remain, we are leaving. I do think it matters if Cornwall has a catastrophic Summer season, followed by a sudden ending of EU funding, unless the Government holds true to its promise to match that funding, which I believe they backtracked on almost as soon as the results were in ?

merrymouse · 26/04/2020 20:53

I don't think there is any way of avoiding that now. The question is how much can be done to help industries that are most affected by the virus.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/04/2020 20:53

Daffodil so if you started showing symptoms you would leave your accommodation and travel across the country, potentially spreading infection? I hope you would then inform the accommodation owners so they can then leave the property vacant for 72 hrs before conducting a full medical deep clean (I wonder if the cleaner would be able to get any PPE) before the next guests are welcomed into a house where there have been a number of COVID cases.
Or would you follow Gov rules & self isolate in that property with your family for two weeks, future bookings notwithstanding?
Not picking on you in particular but the whole hospitality sector is in deep shit whilst we are in a pandemic with no reliable antibody test or vaccine.
Would you stay in a property that may only have been cleaned by the previous tourists who may have been COVID positive?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/04/2020 20:55

My parents depend on a holiday let to top up their scant pensions. They are both high risk & currently self isolating.
I really can't see how they can get back to running it again, unless I take it over.

Yogamad38 · 26/04/2020 21:04

I've cancelled my holiday to Cornwall in August. We were going camping for 10 nights. Even if it is open I don't want to go. I cant see many places being open and I'd rather save some money and stay at home.

Elizabella · 26/04/2020 21:05

@Ihaventgottimeforthis Imagine the little streets of St Ives or Port Isaac in the summer! Now ay you will be able to keep social distance in those sorts of places.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/04/2020 21:11

Exactly. Car parks, ice cream huts, farm shops, even beach entrances.
I just can't see how we can do it, and it makes me sad & worried. We're going to get hit hard either way.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 26/04/2020 21:13

I'm in a small seaside town south west uk, smallest infections and smallest death rate, I work as do my children in the tourist trade, but we have the smallest capacity in hospitals! I have No income at all at the moment as I'm self employed, it might seem we are being mean at the moment, but we aren't, we are a small population with an even smaller NHS capability! We do appreciate the fact you want to enjoy our beaches but we aren't at the moment, I really hope things change soon! And we can welcome you back very soon xx

frumpety · 26/04/2020 21:14

@Elizabella St Ives is where we are supposed to be going, I can do the early morning run/ or last thing run to the Norway stores/Co-op for essentials wine and just go to a certain beach to avoid other people. You are right though, the main thorough fares are going to be a nightmare for social distancing if things get back to normal numbers. Luckily I have stockpiled books and just need an open window to hear the sea Smile

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:15

We are both NHS, we aren’t stupid. My husband is an ITU consultant.

You really think we wouldn’t tell the owner of the cottage? How patronising!

I honestly can’t understand your attitude. You’d think that you’d want sensible visitors who would take a responsible approach and go home if they felt ill. Do you depend on tourism to pit food on your table? I’m assuming lots of people in Cornwall do?

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:16

(Ill see you in the queue outside Norway Stores❤️)

frumpety · 26/04/2020 21:16

When I say run, I don't actually mean running Wink

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:18

No, we do a run there for Croissants! Do you stay in Downalong?

merrymouse · 26/04/2020 21:18

You’d think that you’d want sensible visitors who would take a responsible approach and go home if they felt ill.

Unless you can answer Ihaventgottimeforthis's questions I don't understand what your reasonable approach is.

Surely if you work for the NHS you are aware that there are asymptomatic carriers?

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:20

Yes. Merry mouse. We tend to know about stuff like that.

What do you suggest people do?

The owner of the cottage we rent was so pleased that we didn’t want to cancel. They’ve lost so much money.

What do you suggest?

WutheringBites · 26/04/2020 21:26

The population of Cornwall goes from 500 000 people in the winter to up to 5million over the summer. (I'd hazard a guess that's similar for Devon).

there only needs to be one person who has C19 to infect, say, 2% of the 5million and 100 000 people are infected. If only 20% of that group are unwell enough to need hospital, that's 20 000 people. if those unwell enough to need ICU is about 5%, that's 5 000 people.

Possibly plus a similar number in Devon.

Not sure how much you'd need to divide that number down to get to a figure that Treliske, Derriford, Torbay, Barnstaple and the RD&E would cope with (well; if you calculate for winter residents at that rate they'd just about cope, stretched over several weeks/months). And, yes, there is a Nightingale planned in Exeter, but not, to my knowledge, set up for ventilated patients.

Also - the contact tracing that happened in Torbay was very good; the team down here worked out where the early cases with C19 had been and took action to try and minimise risk by closing schools and a GP surgery. It's all about finding out the contact someone has had and tracing it back to try and minimise spread of disease. Hopefully we'll start doing that again as numbers of cases decrease.

So whilst I normally think it's fab that people want to come down and enjoy the southwest, for the foreseeable, even if the restrictions are lifted, you might choose you'd rather not. Just to show you care about your fellow citizens.

frumpety · 26/04/2020 21:27

Have done for the last few or so years @Daffodil101 Smile

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:29

Best place ever.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/04/2020 21:30

Daffodil I don't know you from Adam so I fully accept you would tell the owner, however you also said you would drive out of county if you got sick, sooo...
I'm just using you as one example of the challenges of providing holiday accommodation to visitors who may, or may not, be carrying a deadly virus.
And how we as cleaners & owners manage that with an acceptable risk to us and future visitors.
It just can't be done in a 6 hr changeover.

merrymouse · 26/04/2020 21:31

Yes. Merry mouse. We tend to know about stuff like that.

So why did you post Any sign of illness and I’ll be going home?. This implies that you don't think you can spread the virus if you don't show symptoms.

What do you suggest?

Honestly? I think it is unlikely that you will be able to go, but if you really want to help the local economy you could agree to take a credit note rather than ask for a refund.

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:32

Why does Treliske only have fifteen beds?

My husbands ITU increased their beds fourfold. Did Treliske not do that?

Mummypig2020 · 26/04/2020 21:33

I hope so. We are supposed to go haven in July and 3 year old has not stopped going on about seeing anxious :( I feel so bad for her. We’ve explained we probably won’t be going but she’s so excited :(

Daffodil101 · 26/04/2020 21:36

Yes, I’d drive out if I got sick.

I’d drive home.

Did you think I’d stop at every county on the way? Or present at Treliske? Because I think that’s exactly what some people will do, and you’d probably criticise them for that, you’d tell them to go home, I presume?
