Do you think Cornwall will be 'open' in July?

Hi all.

A purely speculative post to gauge opinions, as I know we don't know, don't have a crystal ball, etc etc.

We have booked a self catering holiday cottage near Bude for the first 10 days of July. We live in the South East, so it's about 5 hours drive to get there on a good day. We have a dog so would need to stop at a service station at least once.

As part of general future-focused conversation, DH and I are ruminating about

1: will we be 'allowed' to go
2: if we are, would we want to anyway?
3: if it's 'allowed', will the Bude community welcome us or hate us?
4: will the tourist industry want revenue or not?

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Anyone else having similar discussions, and if so, what are you thinking?

And yes, the beach is more appealing. I’m off to walk the dog now, on the beach, and then maybe a little paddle before picking some wild garlic and making pesto with the children.

Have a great day.

It received money from the EU based on economic measures. I don’t really care what you think because the figures show otherwise. It’s considered deprived. It needs the tourist industry. However I’ll stay away. No problems with that.

I’ve got ransomes near me too. Not just a Cornish plant. I’ll be enjoying my swimming pool. Have a great day.

Deprived by ‘GVA output’. You might want to read up on what that means.

Cornwall was here before tourism. It will still be here if there is ever a post tourism era. People are, funnily enough, able to find a multitude of ways to make a living.

Look, you clearly have a real issue with Cornwall. Or maybe you’re pissed off that your little property investment income has been hit. Either way, maybe stay away or don’t be surprised when your attitude causes hostility to come back in your general direction.

Off to the beach, see ya 👋

I love the comments from people who are so proud of the fact they haven't been to Cornwall for decades. It's nothing unusual - more people don't come to Cornwall than do.

Personally I think the announcement that some hospitality venues can open with social distancing in July is optimistic. I think that people will gradually start ignoring lockdown measures, infections and the R Rate will creep back up and they will have to tighten up again, which even if people don't abide by the rules, will mean that businesses can't open.
Also, many hospitality venues in Cornwall are small and very crowded in the summer with limited options to implement safe physical distance, and even if they could, they won't make enough income to survive. So whilst hopefully some will try to re-open (I would LOVE to go back to my local pub on the beach) the long-term impacts will see a decline in the sector.
I'm watching to see what Eden, Tate, Flambards etc do.

But if the caravan parks & campsites open up in July, I will be out there camping. If I can book a pitch!

www.visitengland.com/covid-19-travel-advice the UK tourism office has yet to update their advice since Boris made his last announcement so hopefully they will clarify the situation soon. They would be the place for official regulations in my experience.

I got £10,000 from the council so no hit at the moment. I don’t rely on the income though and if it’s not let, so be it. Others are not so lucky and I feel for them.

Well, the holiday company we booked through updated their information that there will be no holidays before 1st July, and as we were meant to go the week after, we have been able to move our booking to next year. The cottage we go to, is now empty the whole rest of year, I know it had bookings for most of July and August when I checked previously so clearly many other people are moving their booking to next year too.

We do hope a miracle happens and things change so much we can rebook to go later this year but have decided in the current situation isnt worth the risk for anyone.

I can never quite parse these threads.

I am a resident of Ambleside in the Lake District.
Sometimes, tourism is challenging, the crowds and the narrow pavements, the traffic bottleneck, etc.

When covid appeared, I fell In with The ‘fear’. I get it, and it is worrying.

Disease rates in this area are terrible, so early,on I left and joined family further south to endure the lockdown.
Soon, I am going to have to go home again, and I am concerned.
But not about tourists, I am concerned about the high infection rates in the south lakes.
Fucking terrified sometimes.

But I can’t resent tourism.
The reason this place is so flicking lovely is because it became a national park
And if it hadn’t, it might be overgrown, run down and uninhabitable in many parts, regardless the scenic beauty.

We all interweave, for good or ill, and the very reason nations parks evolved was to make places fo beauty available to all, instead of the, only belonging to the privileged few.

I am a renter, have one home, and it has its ups and downs, but I was a tourist before I chose to live here, and I can’t resent anyone taking the same enjoyment

I appreciate covid making us all scared, paranoid,,but we must untanglemwhy we are so disturbed.
