My friend is a conspiracy nut

AIBU not to agree with any just to keep the peace? She is always going on about one conspiracy or another. Vaccines, covid19, the Government etc etc. Did man land on the moon? Did the men in grey kill Diana?

Does anybody else have a conspiracy theory we can put to bed??

Don't forget the flat earthers

Naturalbornkiller · 25/04/2020 22:35

Prince Phillip being dead isn't really a conspiracy theory though. That more gossip.

Conspiracies are more like JFK, the moon landing, Chem trails, flat earth, qanon, pizza gate.

I feel like you are treating your friend like a tin foil hat wearing nut, who thinks the world is flat and wont drink tap water. When actually she just thinks the media is full of shit and has read some online gossip.

BMW6 · 25/04/2020 22:36

I'd find her incredibly boring and tedious if she wanted to discuss them all the time, so the friendship couldn't endure.

cupcakehurricane101 · 25/04/2020 22:36

@Sparklesocks tbh I always think the cast look like they're ready for a night out on normal days. Used to love Hollyoaks when it first started but then it just turned so 'fluffy' 😅 maybe I'm just old and cynical.

Furrybutts · 25/04/2020 22:39

My sympathies op. I have just ended a long friendship for this very reason.

He's always been into conspiracy theories, but since he's become unable to work due to illness, he's relentless with relying them to me and -i- -couldn't- -fu#king- -care- -less- I'm just not interested.

Furrybutts · 25/04/2020 22:40

Apologies, strike out fail there Blush

cupcakehurricane101 · 25/04/2020 22:40

Although you could actually be a friend of mine, since you're describing me 😅 most my friends just lol at me or call me crazy. If you're a friend why can't you talk to her about it? People can respect others opinions?

Navelwort · 25/04/2020 22:40

Tell her that ‘someone said it on Twitter’ is not a credible source for how to change a lightbulb, far less major world events.

BBCONEANDTWO · 25/04/2020 22:41

We need conspiracy theorists - if they had them in North Korea - they would be dead or the country would realise what a corrupt and shitty country they live in.

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 25/04/2020 22:47

i like the Avril Lavigne one. apparently she died at the height of her fame and has been replaced by a lookalike who doesn’t tour or sing very much. this is apparently proven as fans paying for meet and greet photo ops aren’t allowed within 3 feet of her.

the only one i genuinely think might carry some weight is beards. a year ago it was all beards, grow a beard, men, a lovely big manly beards. here are combs, and waxes, and conditioners for your giant hipster beard.

guess what fucks up facial recognition software? beards. so now the advertising is back to who can get the smoothest face.

makes sense when you think about it, no?

Twofurrycatsagain · 25/04/2020 22:47

You can't reason with conspiracy theorists. Because any reasoning is dismissed as fake. Moon landing - fake photos. Earth from space - fake. And so on......

Twofurrycatsagain · 25/04/2020 22:49

And my personal favourite is Denver airport.

JovialNickname · 25/04/2020 22:50

I like the age old tampon one -tampons have asbestos in to make you bleed more, therefore buy more!

God’s footballer
Believes he was born on the planet zorg / Sirius
Yet his mother distinctly remembers giving birth to him in Leicester maternity hospital.
😆

Miljea · 25/04/2020 22:52

Skipped right to the end. Why would China so seriously damage a) its economy, and b), its international standing, (such as it is), in deliberately manufacturing Covid?

What did China stand to gain? Who wins? Who profits? What, in the eyes of a conspiracy theorist, did China gain?

Other than a reputation for lying, covering up, obfuscation?

BubblyBarbara · 25/04/2020 22:53

You can't reason with conspiracy theorists. Because any reasoning is dismissed as fake

Try discussing God with a devout Christian

bluemoon77 · 25/04/2020 22:54

I think there's some truth in the Covid stuff tbh. Clearly escaped from a wuhan lab by mistake.

What if it wasn’t a mistake though?

cupcakehurricane101 · 25/04/2020 22:56

You also can't reason with someone who is not a 'conspiracy theorist' either. They're so rigid, and up their own arse.

GetUpAgain · 25/04/2020 22:59

Oh I have a Facebook friend who has just announced coronavirus is all a terrible conspiracy because she has done some thinking and watched YouTube. She doesn't want to get into debate about it though. Hmm

Superfoodie123 · 25/04/2020 23:01

These days any question of an alternative narrative makes you a 'conspiracist'. It's a really good way to shut people up. One hint of using your brain and you'll be branded a tin foil hatter on mumsnet.

Sparklesocks · 25/04/2020 23:06

@aWeaponCalledtheWord the 3 feet away thing might just be because she’s decided she’s too famous doesn’t want to mix with the unwashed civilians Grin

cupcakehurricane101 · 25/04/2020 23:08

@Superfoodie123 Yuppp ET phone home

Foghead · 25/04/2020 23:10

There are some theories like the virus being linked to a clinic in Wuhan, which could be plausible. I’m not closed to that.
Some are a bit too way out there. Like this virus has been planned to firstly reduce the population and secondly, to be able to track people and infringe on our freedoms more.
We were already giving up a lot because of the terrorism threat. Surely it would be easier to escalate that rather than create a virus so they could start tracking our whereabouts?

Navelwort · 25/04/2020 23:11

The same dimwits who think they’re being ‘open-minded’ to believe in ghosts and psychics appear to pride themselves on their intellectual capacities based on hitting ‘like’ on a couple of Youtube videos because it’s easier than reading a broadsheet and actually looking up the history of a conflict/incident from credible sources if they don’t know about it. Deep indeed. Hmm

Nitpickpicnic · 25/04/2020 23:12

It is interesting that being attracted to conspiracy theories comes attached to another personality trait- that of needing to bang on about it endlessly to everyone?

I mean, you could just quietly believe something but keep it to yourself and just get on with your life, right? I’ve never met a conspiracy theorist who does this.

Tends to suggest to me that they’re filling a hole inside themselves that desperately craves answers AND attention. Whatever the theory they’re spouting.

Try having one for a husband. Came upon him at 50. The bollocks he spouts now, that he would have laughed at heartily all his life is unreal. I’m a huge fan of rationality and an evidence-based world view. It truly might end our marriage one day. Just the social embarrassment is epic. And when he earnestly explains it all to the kids...
