DD punched a wall and is now in agony and can’t move her pinkie, will A&E see her?

Had a row with her BF on phone and unfortunately punched a concrete wall not considering consequences. Is now in agony, can’t move her pinky finger and her hand is visibly not right. Ordinarily would take her down straight away but the hospital is a major city university hospital and I imagine (Well, also know based on what I’ve heard through social media) swamped with CV. The walk-in minor injuries centre near us is also now focused on CV and telling people not to come in and only go to A&E if it is life threatening, which DD’s situation isn’t. Otherwise they seem to just want you to suck it up. Don’t want to unnecessarily risk exposing her or our family to CV, especially if A&E won’t see her for the hand injury. She is 17 so I’d only be dropping her off as I doubt they’d let me in. Really I want to take her but DH is against it as is terrified of CV and wants me to look up how to treat it at home.

They will treat her. Hope it's OK.

megletthesecond · 25/04/2020 12:24

Glad to be taken her in.
And Hmm at all the people thinking that anger management even exists in the NHS. Counselling for nasty depression for kids and adults is barely there as it is.

notapizzaeater · 25/04/2020 12:26

Our a and e has two entrances and 2 completely separate departments - hope you get sorted quickly.

Ouch. How she’s ok, we are all feeling pretty unsettled at the minute and I guess the argument with her boyfriend pushed her over the edge. Don’t over analyse we are all going through a shorty time

BrutusMcDogface · 25/04/2020 12:39

My ex punched a wall aged 17 because we got kicker out of the World Cup. He’s a very well adjusted and successful adult now. Teen hormones are wild. Hope she’s ok!

I'm glad you're taking her to hospital and seriously consider that she does some work on anger management.I volunteer for a street pastor scheme and it's an every night occurrence that a young man will do something similar usually with a lot of shouting and aggression. Arrests follow frequently and the police don't have the time or inclination to ask if they were annoyed by a partner, how they got the injury etc. Mobile phones are also flung against walls quite often.

justasking111 · 25/04/2020 12:42

Friends son got a hand injury last week, they had to go to hospital, they were the only people in A and E. My nurse friends are so worried about this lack of attendance.

WilburIsSomePig · 25/04/2020 12:49

Stupid girl. I'd have zero sympathy. Maybe the pain will teach her a valuable lesson.

Well that's nice. Grin

Bobbiepin · 25/04/2020 12:50

Well this escalated quickly (and completely unnecessarily). Hope your DD is ok OP

MoonlightMistletoe · 25/04/2020 12:57

If she's broken her finger there's not much you can do apart from strap it to the one next to it. Hope she's ok and it's not too bad of an injury.

noblegiraffe · 25/04/2020 12:57

Just for reference, you don’t need to phone 111 to be advised where to go, the NHS online 111 service is good and you won’t need to hang around on hold.

I went on there, did the symptoms questionnaire and it then gave me a list of the local minor injuries units with their opening hours and whether you needed an appointment.

Xenia · 25/04/2020 12:58

Yes, and it won't be busy. If you have a minor injuries clinic which we have near the housee they are very good for this kind of thing (if still open). In our case ours is always much quicker and nicer than A&E.

Xenia · 25/04/2020 12:58

Mind you should we tax payers facing massive tax hikes next year really have to pay for this sort of thing? This is why we need to reform the NHS and cut taxes.

tribpot · 25/04/2020 13:00

Xenia the OP had already said that the minor injuries unit is only managing coronavirus cases currently.

iklboo · 25/04/2020 13:02

You could say that about any accident though?

Floatyboat · 25/04/2020 13:02

@Xenia

Would you cut funding on a condition basis or something more nuanced? Eg type 2 diabetes is largely lifestyle induced but genetics plays a role. How would you resolve that?

What if the injury is the consequence of a diagnosable mental health problem. Would that mean they should get treated?

Goingunderground2 · 25/04/2020 13:05

Go to a and e, they have a "clean" side and "dirty" (covid) side. Type set up so things are separated, there should be good signage informing you of where to go. I hope your daughter is ok. Leave 111 for people seeking help with covid.

Deepmidwicket · 25/04/2020 13:07

FFS some drama llamas on here today please ignore the posters telling you your daughter has anger management issues and needs to see a phycologist.
I punched the wall once as a teen and broke my finger. The thing that stopped me doing it again if the fact it bloody hurt and I felt an idiot. Chances are your daughter will be the same.
If it happens again yes I would prob do something but a one off like this were the only person she has injured is herself- No

gandalf456 · 25/04/2020 13:07

I think the issue of which treatments to fund are a slippery slope to ending the NHS. Where do we draw the line and who decides to play God? I'd rather my money went on avoidable injuries than funding inflated expenses etc.

This.

We had to rush one of our children down to A &E - and the entire hospital has been split in two. There were signs and people behind doors asking questions to make sure people went to right department.

No-one else was there in A &E and masks were handed out - and the wards upstairs were quieter than previously as well but still working though they were trying to get children out quicker than pre-covid times.

StudentHelp · 25/04/2020 13:17

Hope she’s alright!

JRUIN · 25/04/2020 13:19

Glad you're taking her in, poor poppet

Only on mumsnet would a girl who violently smashes her fist into a brick wall, probably whilst wishing wall was her boyfriend, be referred to as a poppet. Take her to A&E OP, I hope the pain and the humiliation she feels when having to explain what happened to the medics teaches her a lesson.
