Is this really a thing?

It's the first day of my period today and I have been convinced I've got Covid (sore throat, runny nose, bit of coughing).
I mean obviously I could have, but I have been very careful and barely been out for weeks, but of course, you never know.
Anyway, I've been Googling stuff and have discoverd that 'period flu' is a thing.
Anyone else had this?

No nor have I ever heard of this sounds like dr Google bs I'm afraid

SoupDragon · 24/04/2020 16:45

Ive never heard of it either.

Piggywaspushed · 24/04/2020 16:46

God yes. When I think I did have CV , at first I thought but could be very bad PMT. I get a sore throat and raised temperature and intolerance to alcohol.

It sucks.

Piggywaspushed · 24/04/2020 16:47

Honestly, it's A Thing.

Elouera · 24/04/2020 16:51

Never heard of it and I'm a nurse!

steggybigback · 24/04/2020 16:54

This is weird! My pmt is increasingly worse over the last couple of years since having dc and I said to my DH this week I swear every sodding month I’m due on my throat hurts and I feel like shit for a few days before my period.

Cottagepieandpeas · 24/04/2020 17:15

Thanks all!
I may be grasping at any passing straw because I really don't want to have CV. I do have health anxiety and am quite terrified at the prospect.

I definitely feel very rough a day or two before my period starts, I've never had period pain, but I get very achey body and generic 'not feeling well'. Oh well, fingers crossed it's gone in a few days.

I feel.like this literally every month. Don't panic!

Lorelaithe1st · 24/04/2020 17:24

Yes! I feel like this every month, it’s shit but usually passes before my period has even started (starts exactly 7 days before period starts).

blueglassandfreesias · 24/04/2020 17:25

Yes I get this with added nausea every month. I read that your immunity lowers on he days leading up to your period so that any sperm would have a fighting chance.
Could also be bad science- see President of USA.

Pelleas · 24/04/2020 17:28

I used to get cold-like symptoms when I ovulated - it genuinely felt as though I were 'coming down with something'. My ovaries were damaged, though, so that might have been why.

Scardanelli · 24/04/2020 17:35

I always had 'period flu', OP. Sad It's horrible. It felt like gastric flu to me (less so now that I'm perimenopausal and on HRT - in fact, periods are a complete doddle now, thank God).

Fluffiest · 24/04/2020 17:39

Weirdly, I got told about it last month.

This last year, I've been having a couple of days each month where I am very tired and cant get warm. It tends to be about 5 days before my period starts. I told my mum about it and she said it could be period flu.

First I'd heard of it!

Floexotic · 24/04/2020 17:45

Never heard of it but do get it! Feel like I’m coming down with a cold most months

CanIbesomeoneelse · 24/04/2020 17:58

I get this, but during ovulation. That’s when I get PMT too.

DamnYankee · 24/04/2020 18:14

Cottagepieandpeas

Do you have allergies? I get achy right before my period, and when certain plants start blooming in April/May or the cat starts shedding her winter coat, I get a cough, runny nose and a sore throat from the post-nasal drip. I get convinced I am sick and then - oh, duh...

Maybe just a perfect storm?

Unless you've got a high fever that persists for days, I wouldn't worry.

Momto2girlies · 24/04/2020 18:30

I've never heard of this but it makes sense. I always feel crappy when I'm due on, sooo tired, achy, unwell generally, headachy, sinusy.

Peapod29 · 24/04/2020 18:32

I’ve never heard of it either...but it sounds exactly like what I get every ovulation, along with agonising tummy and backache!

custodiandiscount · 24/04/2020 18:33

my partner pointed out that I always think I might be getting a cold, 2 days before I get my period. Slightly sore throat and a bit of a runny nose, too hot...I'd never noticed but he is right!

TKAAHUARTG · 24/04/2020 18:36

You probably haven’t heard of it because it is not a medical term. Yes, I know some people get weird symptoms before/during/after their periods. But it is not flu.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 24/04/2020 18:36

What?

Mostly blatantly placemarking.

I'm in my mid-to-late 30s, one DC, tons of period issues, but none that would be "flu like" in any way shape or form!?

vanillandhoney · 24/04/2020 18:37

I get this every single month!

Saucy99 · 24/04/2020 18:39

Yes it's a thing! Invented by noone with medical training to validate and inflate the discomfort of menstruation.

Cottagepieandpeas · 24/04/2020 19:04

@TKAAHUARTG Totally agree with you - it's not flu.

I always get sore throat/cold like symptoms a day or two before my period. Have done for years.
