Teachers - is TLR expected here?

Sorry I’m posting here. I have posted in staff room but no reply yet so hoping to get one here. I’m the only teacher in department teaching the course. No one else in department to manage. Should I be getting a TLR or not?

Hmm. What subject do you teach? If it’s something like art/drama/dance/media where there are a lot of excellent, qualified teachers (ie a non shortage subject) the school probably don’t seem to think it’s necessary to give you a TLR because they don’t have a recruitment issue and TLRs are often just used as sweeteners for recruitment in shortage subjects (other than the obvious - HoDs, 2ic, Key Stage co-ords, HOYs)

It varies on the school completely. I certainly think you are well within your rights to raise the prospect of a TLR 3 or even 2 at your next appraisal if you can argue your progress in that area.

You can ask about a tlr, but unless it is built into the schools staffing structure they won’t be able to just give you one. I think the best thing to do would be to look at other teachers in the same situation e.g one person departments - if they are receiving a tlr you’d have good grounds to argue that you should also be entitled to one.

I used to do this
I got a TLR
however I already had a responsibility point or it might have been 2 I can't remember but when the points system changed I think it might have been pay protection or something
I did all the research for exam boards, wrote the schemes of work etc

I work in a small secondary where many teachers are the only one in their dept and they all get a TLR
