To find the word "cooking" when talking about pregnancy awful?

When people say "my baby is still cooking" or similar, is it not the most awful phrase ever?

Why do people say these things?

bun in the oven? cooking....thats why

I think it sounds a little less formal than gestating. I usually said still growing but DH used cooking from time to time and it didn't offend me.

Cooking is inoffensive but it's like the word "moist" some people don't understand why it sets your teeth on edge!
