to be irrationally annoyed with the furloughed?

I know I am but I'm jealous that they have all day to lie in the sun, home educate their dc, bake, sew, watch TV whilst I'm busier than ever trying to do it all whilst working from home.
I heard on the radio it's going to cost £50 billion over 3 months and I feel annoyed that the economy is totally f**d because we're paying everyone's salaries, and they're at home doing nothing.
I also know none of this is anyone's fault and IABU.

I work in NHS (HCP) and Hands Up ! I do feel a bit jealous . I am human.

I am putting myself at risk going to work .
I am washing my hands so much they look haggard .
I am protected by PPE and in turn protecting my patients (who by and large are very good about Social Distance and happy that we are still running our service)

I am not able to WFH.
I am rubbish at managing my own time . DH WFH and he is very time-management savvy .

I am sort of glad I won't have the massive shock to my system when we all go back to work , whenever that is .

I'll be the frog in the pan of water that heats up from cold , not the frog dropped into boiling water Wink

* I can't imagine anyone on furlough is revelling in it*

I am. Not in RL or anything like that. But, yes - I am.

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 12:29

You’d only be revelling in it if you have cast iron certainty you’d have a job to go back to OR no money concerns if you lose that job.

I can’t imagine too many are in this position.

Bringringbring12 · 24/04/2020 12:33

Not being furloughed certainly doesn’t mean you have any of the above either.
But being furloughed does mean that of your “costs” of working are now zero (and we’re substantial”, I am effectively on precisely the same income as not being furloughed.

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 12:34

Not being furloughed certainly doesn’t mean you have any of the above either.

Well I’m definitely not saying that Confused

Aridane · 24/04/2020 12:35

I am not on furlough and have no job certainty

Thighmageddon · 24/04/2020 12:43

I’m a bit hmm at the many furloughed people who’ve said they are bored. Surely this is a great opportunity to be productive and get loads of stuff done

It would be if the whole being furloughed hadn't walloped my mental health in to the middle of next year.

I don't work for the money, I'm fortunate, I work for my mental health and my security. However the anxiety that's strolled back in for the last few weeks, means I go to bed with good intentions for the next day but I have zero motivation.

Time is now all rolling in to one, five hours goes by in what seems like five minutes. I'd love to snap out of it but I can't and I've had to go back on antidepressants again.

Bringringbring12 · 24/04/2020 12:43

I didn’t say you did. My point was that being furloughed doesn’t put you in a position of vulnerability that really is much different than those non furloughed.

Can you really not grasp that some people on furlough are... well, really enjoying it?!

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 12:48

I don’t agree. Furlough is a more vulnerable state to my mind.

I agree it’s not absolute at all, but in terms of degree, most people will feel significantly securer in a job right now.

Can you really not grasp that some people on furlough are... well, really enjoying it?!

Sure. In the circumstances I outlined. With very robust mental health. No significant risk factors for them and their loved ones. No worries about their children’s progress. I just don’t think very many are in this state.

Yes I tick all those boxes. So you have a point!

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 12:55

Look don’t get me wrong, it’s great if you are.

If there are positives to be taken amongst this shit storm, fucking go for it.

anothernotherone · 24/04/2020 12:57

Very similar to 70isaLimitNotaTarget

It's human to feel jealous of those with time and to properly home educate, when you're working nights or lates or ultra earlies in healthcare or social care in order to come home and home educate while extremely tired and snappy from a full on shift where social distancing is impossible because the clients don't really understand and are more clingy than usual due to the situation.

My hands look like this due to washing them so much at work -they looked normal 3 months ago...

anothernotherone · 24/04/2020 13:07

My bil is furloughed on full pay, but we're not in the UK. He's very well paid too.

The really annoying people are the social media posters with all the "making the most of the new normal" type posts, which usually include incitement not to bother with the set homeschooling work but to bake and garden and do creative projects instead, or photos of angelic primary school children allegedly getting on with school work independently and in harmony.

Obviously those people are "curating" (i.e. faking) their lives, but I've no idea why they post that nonsense if it's not to wind everyone else up!

I hadn't opened my social media accounts in probably a year and thought I'd check in on old friends in lockdown and see how they're doing and say hello, but the shiney leisurely positivity put me right off!

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 13:10

I know someone who’s doing this.

Her business has tanked. She’s got major anxiety issues about CV.

It’s obviously a massive displacement exercise and an attempt to feel good about something in her life.

Now, obviously not everyone is in this position, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

Miljea · 24/04/2020 14:53

I read in this past week's The Week that three times as many people have been furloughed than the government bargained for! That's a lot of cash.

OP, I completely understand your sentiment, and that you know you're BU.

My DH is WFH and very much wishes he was furloughed, especially given that the chances of his company surviving All This is very high, and him getting back into his managerial job is all but guaranteed. But this is because he earns £70k and we have no mortgage or debts (but we do have a destroyed pension pot- he turns 60 next week...). But we have space, a garden etc.

We are fortunate, thus, like several good friends of ours, this is a nice long holiday for them.

I'm coalface NHS HCP so I get to put on 'the kit' and get in there😂- but at least I do get out of the house on my work days. But I wouldn't mind a short furlough....

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 24/04/2020 16:03

My DP is self employed and has no income. I’ve been furloughed so my income has been cut. We’ll manage at the moment but if any unexpected major expenses come up we’ll be in trouble. I’m trying to make the best of the time I have for study and professional development, and helping DP generate some alternative income, but basically it is shit and not an easy time at all. I know there are many much worse off and some colleagues are really struggling already financially and emotionally.

moose62 · 24/04/2020 17:28

My daughter was furloughed. She realises how lucky she is not to lose her job. She is an engineer and is now working at a hub of London hospital organising logistics for them. She is a volunteer, is gaining nothing from this apart from doing her bit for the NHS and repaying the government. She could be sitting at home sunbathing instead of going into a hospital environment every day with all that entails! You are being very unreasonable!

helpIhateclothesshopping · 24/04/2020 17:32

I can see your point. I can't help being a bit jealous of those people sorting out their gardens or lying in paddling pools while I am working in a hospital and know that our taxes will also be paying for it for the next few years. Not that I'm not grateful for having a job, it's just a bit frustrating having to do 3 people's jobs at work, manage the kids home schooling and my house permanently looks like a tip while a lot of people will be getting paid way more than me to sit at home.

Auckland11 · 24/04/2020 17:32

I was off for the 1st month due to being signed off work and i went back this week and im so happy to be back to work(working in a school kitchen) and my daughter is going to out school hub, its just her and me in the house.

Lincolnfield · 24/04/2020 17:34

God! Nobody is having a ball with all this. My friend had a small beauty salon, her, her daughter and a single employee. She’s totally screwed. Her business will never reopen. She can’t get help from anywhere.

Her daughter and her partner literally just bought their first house last year. Her partner is a personal trainer at a gym so now they have no income at all.

There are a few people on my road who have been furloughed and they are all beside themselves with worry. It’s not that their employers are earmarking them for redundancy it’s that the businesses they work in may well go under so they’ll all lose their jobs.

Yes YABVU.

Spaceshiphaslanded · 24/04/2020 17:35

You are, but me too.
I think it’s probably just that we are all finding this hard now and are gettin envious of the perceived greener grass others have. Working from home with 2 small kids is full on exhausting 💐 x

Mikeymoo12 · 24/04/2020 17:36

Surely this cannot be real?! Why would you be jealous of the poor people at risk of loosing their jobs!? I know that as an NHS worker I am very lucky to be getting my full wage and that financially I am not affected. I am really shocked by this thread

cloudspotter · 24/04/2020 17:37

You're just being honest. The grass is always greener but there are pros and cons on each side.

sturdywiththewordyshakespear · 24/04/2020 17:38

YABU ;-)) I'm self-employed and don't qualify for any help at all - so this is all very squeaky bums for me and my self-employed other half. I don't think it's fair to be annoyed with the furloughed - obviously they can't help it and of course it's better to keep them employed to give their companies a prayer when it's back to normalish. HOWEVER, it irks me in our situation that we'll be bailing out big companies like Wetherspoons and Virgin when their shareholders and directors routinely trouser bajillions of pounds but somehow don't have to put their hands back in those deep pockets when things go south. THAT ANNOYS ME!!

AllInTentsWithPorpoises · 24/04/2020 17:39

YABU. I am furloughed and having to work on the sly to help out as our company won't actually exist after this if I and the other staff don't. I am really worried about the future, especially since I am in the middle of a divorce at the moment as well. I have zero savings and a lot of stress.
