I have been scammed and sold a stolen bicycle

Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:37

Yesterday I cheerily bought a bicycle from gumtree because I wanted to get fit and improve my mental health. Feel free to search up my thread here asking if IABU to go and buy it. I don't know how to link.

So I collected the bike and all seemed fine. The man said he's a cyclist and is only selling because he has upgraded. He seemed like a nice guy.

I took it for a ride today and stopped for a few minutes to catch my breath, sweating hot.

Two teenage boys crossed the road to ask if I needed the bicycle because if not they'll give me £10 for it.

I thought they were just being cheeky so I laughed it off and said no thanks I've just bought this.

One proceeded to tell me it's illegal. I asked how so, and he replied that it's an "ofo" bike.

I don't know what an ofo bike is. I've lived in London three years, on the outskirts, and ive never once used rental bikes.

I came home quickly and looked online and they were right, it's the same bike, same thing spray painted black.

I then examined it properly and it's clear that underneath the frame there are specs of yellow where the top layer of black paint has chipped off.

I thought the frame was a bit unusual and different to the mountain bike I had years ago but I don't know anything about bikes in genetal so I wasn't to know.

I almost had a panic attack cycling home as a police car drove toward me and pulled up. I got off the bike ready to speak to them and explain how I'd just bought it but then they went into a house behind me.

I'm at home now having a cry.

Fucking bastard.

DH is going to ring him in a moment and say we're bringing it back tomorrow and want a refund otherwise we are calling the police.

I don't think we should ring ahead personally because that gives him a heads up that we now know.

Alternatively I could ring the police myself now and kiss goodbye to the £45 Sad

Bikes in general not genetal

I don’t mean to laugh but this post is very dramatic. You made a mistake. The police will not get involved, try and get your money back if you can’t just move on. No need to cry.

itbemay · 23/04/2020 14:41

why don't you call the police and see if the bike is reported as stolen, i have no idea what you mean by ofo bike and i live in london.

Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:41

Do you think? I'm terrified I'll be prosecuted for handling stolen goods Blush

Nanasueathome · 23/04/2020 14:42

Are OFO bikes still available ?
I had no idea what they were and looked it up
It does seem that there’s no longer anything up and running for them and there are some for sale

It is one of these, so people are aware of what they are and that they're stolen.

This thread came up when I come home and began googling what it was

Handling stolen goods😂😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️ You can show the purchase information on gumtree and that you didn’t know. The world has bigger issues on atm rather than a £45 purchase. It’s a push bike hardly a new Lexus! Calm. Down!

georgialondon · 23/04/2020 14:44

An ofo bike is a brand of rental bike in London.

I'd just put it down to experience. Not much ty scan do. I doubt you'd find the person at the same address if you went back.

peoplewhoannoyyou · 23/04/2020 14:45

Check the serial number on the frame to see if it's been stolen. Maybe OFO sold them off when they pulled pulled out.

lyralalala · 23/04/2020 14:45

OFO pulled out of the Uk did they not?

Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:45

Apologies for being dramatic, it's just that I could lose my job if I were to be dragged into theft or handling stolen goods proceedings.

OP posts:
Yugi · 23/04/2020 14:46

Googled Ofo as i'd never heard of it and it looks like it pulled out of London last summer. Possibly they sold off the bikes?

ShirleyPhallus · 23/04/2020 14:46

There are a lot for sale, are you sure the company is still going?

Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:46

I'm a bit confused because I too have just read an article saying ofo has pulled out of London.

I'll check if there is a visible serial number.

Somebody warned me not to buy from gumtree yesterday. What a tit.

TDL2016 · 23/04/2020 14:47

Considering OFO pulled out of London in 2019, I’m not sure there’s much they are going to do about the bike you’re currently riding. If you paid via PayPal, then make a claim through them. There’s plenty for sale on eBay, so I don’t think it’s the polices number one priority. Perhaps go to your local station for advice.

Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:48

I need to ascertain whether it is definitely an ofo bike or a "Boris Bike" as they are still in usage in London and the frame is very similar

OP posts:
Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:50

I'm guessing ofo as there is yellow underneath the black paint and the Santander ones dubbed Boris bikes are black

OP posts:
cupcakehurricane101 · 23/04/2020 14:51

You're not being dramatic. You're reacting to a surprising situation you didn't expect and it's thrown you. I'd be tempted to throw the bike through his window and scream "You f##£& prick!!" But obviously you're good girl who doesn't give into temptation 🙈👀 What a knob 🤬

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 23/04/2020 14:51

How much did you pay for it?

Roostersmum2 · 23/04/2020 14:53

£45

OP posts:
coconuttelegraph · 23/04/2020 14:54

I didn't see your thread yesterday and it's clunky to search on my phone so don't know what you were advised but if it was anything other than be extremely wary of buying a pushbike on Gumtree you were badly done to.

If your job is really at risk surely it's no brainer to write off the money and get rid of the bike. In fact each out the boys who approached you and take them up on their offer Smile

TooTrueToBeGood · 23/04/2020 14:54

If you buy stolen property it's not a given that you have committed an offense. A lot depends on whether you should have reasonable grounds to believe it might have been stolen. That said, even if you buy stole property in innocence and good faith it still belongs to the rightful owner. You really need to clarify if this bike has been stolen or might have been sold off by Ofo.

Notredamn · 23/04/2020 14:54

The two boys were having you on. They wanted the bike off you.
Try to calm down about it.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/jan/10/ofo-cycle-hire-firm-pulls-out-of-london

They aren't in business any more. Presumably their stock was sold off?

HopeYouStepOnALego · 23/04/2020 14:58

Sounds like you got a bargain. Some of them are listed for well over £100 on eBay Grin
