To think a great big semi or detached house must be SO lovely?!

Terraced here. It's okay most of the time but I dream of living in a house with no fucking neighbour noise whatsoever. These walls are so thin I can hear the microwave next door. I dream of buying a semi detached in a few years with hallways next to each other separating the living rooms or when I'm really feeling ambitious I dream of a detached house, which must be the mother of all awesomeness. I know there is still 'area noise' but I'm not really a garden person so kids playing outside and lawnmowers etc don't phase me so much. But oh to wake up with no 'house noise' and to know I can sit in the lounge or lie in bed and have PURE SILENCE all day and not hear a dog bark or a door slam or an argument or a television. Is it as great as I think it is?

Yes. Yes, it is.

MistyIsland · 23/04/2020 13:18

Yeps! It’s amazing

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/04/2020 13:19

Having moved up from maisonettes to terraces to a detached house over the years - yes it is much easier.

TeeniefaeTroon · 23/04/2020 13:19

Yep, I'm so lucky.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 23/04/2020 13:19

Ah bless you.
My dh wanted to buy a detached house and I wasnt particularly bothered but actually it is nice, I've realised how much I reduced my noise when living in a terraced or semi house.
When we first moved I would tell dd2 to be quieter for the neighbours and then realised they weren't there

Queenunikitty · 23/04/2020 13:20

It’s much much more expensive for utilities like heating. I’d much prefer a terrace or flat to be honest.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 23/04/2020 13:21

I’m not concerned about hearing the neighbours noise, I don’t hear any too much luckily.
However I often think of how lovely it must be not to keep saying “please walk down the (wooden) stairs quietly so we don’t wake the neighbours! Please don’t make too much noise in the pool! Please don’t play so loudly! “ all day! X

BillHadersNewWife · 23/04/2020 13:21

It's pretty good. We left the UK for Oz four years ago and went from a two bed flat to a large detached Bungalow. I love it but now dream of stairs. 😂

lubeybooby · 23/04/2020 13:21

I lived in terraces for 38 years of my life (which was fine, had to be done) and now in a detached. It is something I'm actively grateful for without fail daily. You're not wrong. I'm kind of glad of all the time in terraces being first though for the added gratitude. I'd hate to just expect this as the norm

Dipi79 · 23/04/2020 13:22

I'm sure it is, but I'm just grateful for a room over my head, tbh.

Dipi79 · 23/04/2020 13:22

Devlesko · 23/04/2020 13:23

We are large Edwardian semi, but we make lots of noise.
We are musicians and entertainers so always someone practising or teaching from 9am - 8pm. Our neighbours are brilliant, not sure what we'd have done with neighbours who don't like noise.

Oxyiz · 23/04/2020 13:23

I think it must be nice to have a house and a garden - any kind really. Our flat is fine and I'm grateful for a place to live, but it would be nice to have more space and some outdoors.

lubeybooby · 23/04/2020 13:23

@Queenunikitty my house is a little cheaper to run than my old drafty victorian terrace. Blew my mind.

lastqueenofscotland · 23/04/2020 13:23

I’m in a semi with a corner plot it’s been heaven in lockdown having all this space Grin

bloodyhellsbellsx · 23/04/2020 13:24

Yeah I’ve always lived in detached since being 10, and now as a homeowner I can’t imagine having neighbours that I could hear! But I know I’m lucky.

Oxyiz · 23/04/2020 13:24

Actually no, "entertaining noise from 9am-8pm" sounds like utter hell on earth to me. To the point that I can't believe anyone lives happily like that. So the flat is fine Grin

araiwa · 23/04/2020 13:24

Yep

Its great

ssd · 23/04/2020 13:25

I can hear next doors answering machine 😣

Bloomburger · 23/04/2020 13:26

But one in the middle is a huge field then or you can't open your windows for hearing fuckers mowing their lawns or banging away doing renovations or as here the builders over the back stripping the render from their whole fucking house. 😡

ScarfLadysBag · 23/04/2020 13:26

Yes, it's nice knowing no one can hear DD screaming blue murder because she was removed from the snack drawer Grin And being able to use washing machine etc any time of day or night!

OhClover · 23/04/2020 13:27

We are in a semi but the noise from our attached neighbours is fine. The main problem is the barking from the dog on the other side!

RUSU92 · 23/04/2020 13:27

Nah, you can still hear dogs barking and especially in the summer with windows open, an argument would carry. People blast their music even louder when they think they’re not disturbing anyone - I’m sure many people in semi and terraced houses are considerate because they know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the noise! (I know some aren’t, but I’ve lived in each type of house and never had any noise from neighbours in the semi detached and only the odd raised voices in the terrace).

I live in a detached house and my son is a musician so has been known to play drums, guitar etc. Several neighbours also play instruments or music loudly - you can hear it from 4/5 houses away.

Unless you can afford a big plot in the middle of nowhere there will be neighbourly noise. Buy a big bag of Howard Leight foam earplugs and spend your days in beautiful silence Grin I buy them as DP is a snorer but I have been known to pop them in when I want an hour to read in silence! Startles me when the kids appear though - (not recommended with little ones but mine are all teens so I need them Grin )

NeverYouMind123 · 23/04/2020 13:28

I will never, ever afford a detached on my own without a windfall (I'd never buy a house with anyone else) but hopefully one day I will upgrade to a semi detached. One day... 🙏

I can still hear them in their gardens around me. So for me it’s not that amazing.
