To think this situation shows up the divisions in the UK

England's leaders seems to have responded with early denialism and delay, closely followed by a lockdown, constant constant WW2 references and a new and slightly disturbing deification of the NHS. Johnson's illness caused even critical press to become sycophantic cheerleaders, & the political focus seems to be on constantly harping on about how magnificent the government are, how they are leading the fight, how now is not the time to let up and a total inability to acknowledge the obvious flaws that have led to increased deaths.
I don't know much about Wales, but it seems to be Scotland and Northern Ireland have taken a far more pragmatic, scientific, European approach. Obviously the Republic of Ireland is outside the UK but it seems their approach in terms of politics and communication has been far closer to Scotland than to England. I can just see the English tabloids splashing a cigar chomping Johnson and partner and new baby on the front cover wirh headlines like "Britain's baby bounce" and ubiquitous WW2 imagery. Obviously England and Scotland already differed widely on Brexit, now it seems that public policy and the general way of thinking of the people and their leaders is further apart than ever. I

England left the EU (and forced the rest of the UK out) on the 31 January. For 4 years you allowed your country to be obsessed by it. All that time should have been spent on things which were genuinely important to people's lives (like preparing for a pandemic) but no, it was Brexit, Brexit, Brexit. Because nothing else mattered, apparently.

And now we're supposed to stand in solidarity. I do stanc in solidarity with all those who have died (like one of my relatives) but don't continue insulting my country. It's just crass.

BovaryX · 23/04/2020 00:35

Can you explain @Ihatecurtaintwitchers, what you mean by 'early denialism, WW2, I don't know much about Wales, cigar chomping, Britain's baby bounce' which you cite in your opening post? Any explanation? Or is it random?

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:35

@Thethiniceofanewday it is on that's the problem it keeps changing words so it doesn't make sense
Regarding your comment in deliberately diverting Ppe that's been proven as false and accepted by the Scottish health minister to my knowledge

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:38

anxious er..no. One of the suppliers confirmed it www.itv.com/news/wales/2020-04-15/ppe-supplier-england-only-policy-for-care-homes/

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:39

@Thethiniceofanewday Yes, as you mention, we're all in it together. How dare we question those in Westminster. they do no wrong, and we shouldn't ever challenge otherwise.

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:39

“he arrangements for supplying PPE to all parts of the UK are set out in a document issued by the Department of Health.

It repeatedly stresses the importance of the four UK nations working together and sharing resources but it also explains that to buy certain items from wholesalers, care providers have to be registered with the Care Quality Commission, which only operates in England.
23 million items of PPE have been released to designated wholesalers for onward sale to social care providers. We have made arrangements with seven wholesalers to supply PPE to the social care sector. [They] will all provide supplies to care providers registered with the Care Quality Commission.

I think wee nippy has been more open with us . For example saying she can't see any schools in Scotland opening before summer holidays . Whereas I don't think boris has said similar and given a estimated date.

What a load of garbage/rubbish/shite

perniciousdot · 23/04/2020 00:44

OP - . I hate MN

Bye.

MissHoskins · 23/04/2020 00:45

@Ihatecurtaintwitchers
I don't know much about Wales
Talk about state the bleeding obvious.

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:45

@MissHoskins

Please explain how?

As The Times reported last weekend the UK used to be the global example of how to deal with a pandemic. Not anymore. Because for 4 years you were obsessed with Brexit and all those 'foreigners` And you dragged out Scotland and NI against their will, but I doubt you care.

Peppafrig · 23/04/2020 00:48

@Ouch21 you are aware that over a million Scots voted to leave the EU right? So 1 million of Scots got what they wanted .

BovaryX · 23/04/2020 00:49

Not anymore. Because for 4 years you were obsessed with Brexit
@Ouch21

Are you attempting to blame the UK for a virus which originated in Wuhan because the UK voted Brexit? Seriously? Can you scrape further to the bottom of the barrel? Scrape. Scrape.

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:52

@Peppafrig 62% voted to remain, but hey, they shouldn't even have a parliament so why does it matter?

@BovaryX Oh really, don't be so ridiculous. Read my previous comments and grow up. People have died, including someone close to me.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 23/04/2020 00:53

What is Scotland doing differently to England?
well they are both taking advice from the same scientists

& whatever the baying press choose to focus on isn't really anything to do with govt strategy.
Govt. does seem to have severely fucked up with PPE though.

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:53

@thethink. That's been proven incorrect even Scotland's ministers are saying it was not true once looked into

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:54

And today I watched my Nan's funeral via webcast, because I wasn't allowed to attend the funeral. And yes it hurt.

Peppafrig · 23/04/2020 00:56

@Ouch21 they shouldn't have a parliament? Who is they? I'm Scottish l

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:57

Re : schools no Boris has not given a date but then England have different holidays to Scotland so this could be looked at differently as Scotland break up a few weeks before England and Wales .

I’ve been disappointed by the UK. Brexit has dominated everything and all else has been left to float around in a void. It a world leader for science, a brilliant NHS and often competent and capable leadership, whichever party.

However now it is weak and it shows. Boris and his cronies have not led, even the scientific and medical leaders in charge have not led well. Some of the things Sir Patrick Vallance said about herd immunity made my jaw drop. And he’s a very respected man, I don’t know what’s happened.

I also saw many respected capable scientists and epidemiologists not challenge those in the power circle. It goes against scientific rigour not to challenge. I’m a scientist and thought we would be out front on this. We have really made a mess of it top down. Bottom up seems good though, us the public, the workers, those working in labs and those making progress scientifically, care workers and shop workers. I’m proud of those. I’m not proud they dropped contact tracing and testing and made workers beg for PPE.

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:58

@Peppafrig I was being sarcastic :(

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:59

I will say though I'm no Nicola Sturgeon fan but she does her press conferences well
Overall I think England and Scotland and wales will follow very similar paths on coming out of lockdown as they have going into it
It's not vastly different and they have to work together as we have no borders between us

LeekPeachPlum · 23/04/2020 01:01

England also had covid assessment centres
