To think this situation shows up the divisions in the UK

England's leaders seems to have responded with early denialism and delay, closely followed by a lockdown, constant constant WW2 references and a new and slightly disturbing deification of the NHS. Johnson's illness caused even critical press to become sycophantic cheerleaders, & the political focus seems to be on constantly harping on about how magnificent the government are, how they are leading the fight, how now is not the time to let up and a total inability to acknowledge the obvious flaws that have led to increased deaths.
I don't know much about Wales, but it seems to be Scotland and Northern Ireland have taken a far more pragmatic, scientific, European approach. Obviously the Republic of Ireland is outside the UK but it seems their approach in terms of politics and communication has been far closer to Scotland than to England. I can just see the English tabloids splashing a cigar chomping Johnson and partner and new baby on the front cover wirh headlines like "Britain's baby bounce" and ubiquitous WW2 imagery. Obviously England and Scotland already differed widely on Brexit, now it seems that public policy and the general way of thinking of the people and their leaders is further apart than ever. I

I mean, why buy ventilators from the EU's joint scheme?

`'oh, we won't buy because we're not in the EU'

The English government has played politics throughout. Because Brexit will always be more important to them than human life.
@Ouch21 what bollocks you talk.

Firstly, there is not yet any proof that any decisions were made for political reasons.

Secondly, that scheme hasn't even delivered any ventilators to any countries yet so what difference would it have made?

Finally there is no such thing as an "English Government". The House of Commons in Westminster is composed of MPs from England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

I've just done a few simple sums and the Week 15 Covid19 deaths relative to the population are actually slightly higher in Scotland than for England and Wales. So perhaps there aren't the divisions in the UK the OP thought. Looks like we really are all in this together.

Now, haven't all of you cybernats got a bridge to be lurking under?

BovaryX · 22/04/2020 23:57

Really? Can you give specific examples of the difference in the approach of Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Thethiniceofanewday · 22/04/2020 23:57

easilyanxious “Again population of Scotland and how many care homes compared to England very very different” what does this even mean?

The question was “what has Scotland done differently” not “how big is the care home sector”.

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:01

My population was regarding the poster who says Scotland include care homes figure and England does not unexplained I believe it is because there are a lot more figures to get from UK due to population amount of care homes etc compared to Scotland but that these figures are on the ONS albeit a little behind

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:03

@DdraigGoch Yes, anyone who stands up for Scotland is obviously is a cybernat. What a terrible lot we are.

BovaryX · 23/04/2020 00:05

It's interesting, isn't it? This initial post? No substantiation. No evidence. No citations. But a deliberate attempt to create conflict and internecine, sectarian squabbling. In the face of a global pandemic.

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:07

Yep, that was me. As other posters have pointed out since, you’re talking shite, hen. The ONS figures are not the ones given at the daily number 10 press conferences. The headline figure given by DHSC to the press only includes people who died in hospital after a positive COVID19 test. It’s not about size of population it’s about political will.

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:09

BovaryX you could RTFT, I’ve given several examples of things Scotland has done differently.

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:10

I'm fully aware what figures are given at the daily press conference and that has been made clear of course its easier to get figures quicker if you have less to collate .
If I have get figures in for 10
Companies say or 200 companies what's going to take me longer

BovaryX · 23/04/2020 00:12

Did you change username or are you answering on behalf of the OP?

DdraigGoch · 23/04/2020 00:14

@Ouch21 what's there to stand up for? All four nations (along with half the world) are up shit creek without a paddle. Scotland isn't doing any better (or any worse) than the rest. You are creating divisions where there were none.

YeahWhatevver · 23/04/2020 00:14

Scotland announced school closures first and forced England's hand

We're set yo be the European country worst hit by coronavirus. Its not happened because the government are doing an amazing job!

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:17

posterDdraigGoch

Please explain the divisions I created.

How DARE you presume my motives. Oh a deliberate attempt to provoke sectarian squabbling? Have you ffs read the constant constant constant constant squabbling and point scoring on here. I hate MN.

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:18

bovaryx no, I’m not the OP. Didn’t realise only the OP is allowed to contribute facts to a thread. Silly me.

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:21

Oh, here’s another way Scotland is doing things differently - the leader of the Scottish Government takes questions from the press every day and didn’t give herself Coronavirus by “shaking hands” with “everyone”.

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:23

@posterIhatecurtaintwitchers Apparently you're sectarian for posting something legitimate. But don't moan. You're naturally unreasonable for daring to question something so important. Let the wrath of mumsnet make you feel inferior (not).

BovaryX · 23/04/2020 00:24

The original post in this thread is quite fascinating. 'Early denialism.... I don't know much about Wales ... WW2.... cigar chomping...' Is it some kind national stereotype bingo? Is its aim to provoke a shouty little flame war between MN fans of England, Scotland, Wales? By someone whose ignorance of Wales is so profound it doesn't even merit a cliche? How very manufactured.

Ouch21 · 23/04/2020 00:25

@Thethiniceofanewday Oh be reasonable. How dare Scotland have a devolved government. Just imagine how much better it'd be if Boris controlled everything. .

BovaryX · 23/04/2020 00:26

How DARE you presume my motives

Gosh. Does the disproportionate outrage gig usually work for you?

Ihatecurtaintwitchers · 23/04/2020 00:27

How very manufactured
How very patronising and seeking to impute people's motives you are.

OP posts:
Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:27

@Thethiniceofanewday one of your doing things differently was the cancelling of walss v Scotland game which had nothing to do with Scotland infact most of their supporters were already there as I was there chatting to some who went happy the decision was made so late
Of course Boris taking questions at the money he's been seriously ill if ND was that I wouldn't expect her to be either
The reality is they aren't all doing much different to each other in the grand scheme of things as it stands now

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:30

Ouch21 Grin Celts, know your place.

We haven’t even got started on Westminster gazumping a supply of tests the Welsh Government had bought; or telling the 4 biggest PPE wholesalers they were banned from supplying Welsh and Scots customers, leaving care homes without PPE for their staff.

Yes, we’re all in it together.....

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 00:31

Should say Boris taking questions of the press and if NS was ill I wouldn't expect her to be there either
Anyway don't reply as leaving this thread now as it is pointless

Thethiniceofanewday · 23/04/2020 00:32
