To think this situation shows up the divisions in the UK

England's leaders seems to have responded with early denialism and delay, closely followed by a lockdown, constant constant WW2 references and a new and slightly disturbing deification of the NHS. Johnson's illness caused even critical press to become sycophantic cheerleaders, & the political focus seems to be on constantly harping on about how magnificent the government are, how they are leading the fight, how now is not the time to let up and a total inability to acknowledge the obvious flaws that have led to increased deaths.
I don't know much about Wales, but it seems to be Scotland and Northern Ireland have taken a far more pragmatic, scientific, European approach. Obviously the Republic of Ireland is outside the UK but it seems their approach in terms of politics and communication has been far closer to Scotland than to England. I can just see the English tabloids splashing a cigar chomping Johnson and partner and new baby on the front cover wirh headlines like "Britain's baby bounce" and ubiquitous WW2 imagery. Obviously England and Scotland already differed widely on Brexit, now it seems that public policy and the general way of thinking of the people and their leaders is further apart than ever. I

Yes OP

It seems to me the English are quite religious,

The god of health is the NHS, she must be appeased through applause, constant appreciation, no criticism, no questioning

If anyone questions the god of health, frightening tales of the anti Christ (American Health system) end all debate shhhhh

Then there is the god of wealth. Aka the economy. Also asking for sacrifices. We do not really know who the economy is or what she wants, but she should be allowed to grow or bad things will happen. Criticism or questioning leads to being called a communist weirdo.

Something like that

But yeah, the deification of the NHS has reached a new level

yerawizadari · 22/04/2020 22:50

I am so so so SICK of reading this complete and utter drivel motivated by small minded people just trying to get one over on someone else

So what was your motive OP, in starting this 'Scotland has handled the whole thing really well, England has fucked up again' thread, if not to metaphorically rub our noses in it?

Oh, and by the way, the English are not all of one hive mind, and we don't all vote the same way. So please don't tar us all with the same brush.

Easilyanxious · 22/04/2020 22:51

@yerawizadari I agree
What is the point other than to cause divide

RJnomore1 · 22/04/2020 22:53

Living in Scotland, working for a local authority at the sharp edge of dealing with this, I am confident saying the Scottish government approach is a complete shambles so if it’s worse elsewhere god help you all.

Patch23042 · 22/04/2020 22:58

@misshoskins - you misunderstood. I blamed the “decision makers”. I made no reference to politicians in my post, Tory or otherwise. I am well aware of who made each decision.

Ouch21 · 22/04/2020 22:59

Perhaps if in 2016 the UK had learnt from their pandemic emergency testing - when they were told the UK wouldn't cope, we'd be in a better place.

But of course, all resources were on a 'no-deal Brexit', so it wasn`t a priority.

I´ll be flamed (but I don't care) England's obsession with Brexit has cost us all dearly, but they'll never accept it.

LagunaBubbles · 22/04/2020 23:02

if nicnic starts her crap about westmonsters I think I will have a meltdown, cmon we are all in this together let’s not use this as a political competition

No let's just use it to call the First Minister of Scotland a stupid name, so much better. Hmm

Ouch21 · 22/04/2020 23:04

I mean, why buy ventilators from the EU's joint scheme?

`'oh, we won't buy because we're not in the EU'

The English government has played politics throughout. Because Brexit will always be more important to them than human life.

LagunaBubbles · 22/04/2020 23:07

And Scottish Independence is absolutely dead

Haha so it is. This isn't going to degenerate into a pro/anti independence, other priorities at the moment however the way Bojo and his clown mates have carried on has only strengthened support for independence, not harmed it.

thegcatsmother · 22/04/2020 23:08

FGS Ouch it was a procurement scheme which we didn't join, where everyone sourced kit, then it was divided according to need, so Spain, Italy and Belgium would have been ahead of us in the queue. Hancock explained we have now signed up, but that not one piece of equipment has yet been forthcoming from this joint procurement.

Cam77. I think Belgium is ahead of us in deaths per capita.

Ouch21 · 22/04/2020 23:12

@thegcatsmother Oh yes, Hancock, we surely all trust him. He's handled it all wonderfully. How dare the EU divide kit according to those who need it the most. Those awful 'foreigners' in Spain, Italy and Belgium can just get on with it. Are you for real??

adiposegirl2 · 22/04/2020 23:12

Has anyone noticed that the BBC has been China neutral? Is there some kind of D notice in place? Even with the dodgy tests- still not a word of criticism at the most or questioning at the very least?

Maybe its because of post Brexit trade deals the Government want to remain on friendly terms?

user1471510720 · 22/04/2020 23:13

To be more European, god no, that’s why it’s great we are leaving the awful and corrupt franchise.

Boireannachlaidir · 22/04/2020 23:13

I don't know much about Wales, but it seems to be Scotland and Northern Ireland have taken a far more pragmatic, scientific, European approach

What a ridiculous post. If anything this pandemic has served to highlight the divisions within the European Union where the Southern European countries feel let down by the Northern European countries, hardly a joined-up approach.

Thankfully most sensible Scots realised the CMO appointed by sturgeon was not worth listening to. This was after she lectured to them about not visiting their elderly relatives or going to funerals and only making essential journeys such as to check up on a second home two weeks in a row with your whole family in tow. The crass hypocrisy. Thankfully we are part of the UK and can ignore the 20 years of failed devolution which has brought our country to its knees and listen to the CMO in England and follow their approach.

Ouch21 · 22/04/2020 23:19

@Boireannachlaidir Oh yes, that awful devolution. How dare a country try and govern themselves. If only they submitted to Boris.

Nyx · 22/04/2020 23:21

Those who think Scottish independence is dead are in for a surprise when this is all over. It's depressing that this thread has so much spite and disdain for Scotland and what we achieve. "It's simply because Scotland is smaller" "The FM gives her announcements first, that's all" (ffs)

Easilyanxious · 22/04/2020 23:25

There is more disdain against England in this post than Scotland
It shouldn't be us versus them as it stands at the moment we are all part of the uk .
Independence will be off for a long time as we are fighting a pandemic that isn't going away anytime soon and the recovery from it will take a while for many countries

Easilyanxious · 22/04/2020 23:27

We should be wanting all if the uk well to the works to recover from this as quickly as possible surely that's all that matters at this time

Easilyanxious · 22/04/2020 23:28

Should of read the whole world to recover from this as quickly as possible

Ouch21 · 22/04/2020 23:29

I do not detect any disdain for England in this post?

Has anyone from Scotland said you don't have the right to govern yourselves, or 'thank goodness' you don't rule your own country?

I agree, we fight this pandemic together. But this disdain from so many here (as always) proves a wider point.

QuinceSavedMyLife · 22/04/2020 23:32

These "we're vastly superior to English people" threads just stoke up bad feeling and make me reach for the Hide button. Presses hide

Easilyanxious · 22/04/2020 23:34

The ones saying about independence not happening were also from
People in Scotland and the person who openly started the post with the English ?

Nyx · 22/04/2020 23:44

It's not Scottish people against English people or vice versa. Nobody said it was. The OP wrote reasons for their view. If you disagree, discuss what they wrote. Do you think they were wrong in what they said about Johnston and his team and how they have reacted to the virus?

Easilyanxious · 22/04/2020 23:47

Clearly the post has turned that way and the op hasn't returned to justify any comments people made earlier in to say why they disagreed

Trichford · 22/04/2020 23:50

What @Ouch21 and @LagunaBubbles said 👏🏼
