Norethisterone tablets

Hi everyone

Wanted to post here as I know I'll get more answers.

Has anyone been prescribed Norethistrerone to stop their periods?

Last night I was taken by ambulance to hospital as I've been bleeding heavily and filling a pad every 15 minutes. I have a history of endometriosis and was meant to have another laparoscopy for it on 14th April which was cancelled, understandably.

I had an ERPC in January and didn't get a period until March which was awful and I was in so much pain that the dr prescribed me tramadol.

This time around I haven't been able to control the bleeding, have nearly passed out and my husband called 111 last night who sent me an ambulance because I could barely get any words together.

When I was in hospital, I had an internal and was given morphine and liquid form of tranexamic acid through a cannular. They said I'm bleeding so heavily through scar tissue and endometriosis on my womb.

They've given me Norethistrerone to stop the bleeding and to take continuously until I have the operation which could be over 3 months away but I'm a bit worried about doing this.

Any advice would be great, thank you xx

I've taken it several times for holidays so I could go swimming etc. I don't remember having any real side effects and as long as you keep taking them they work well.

Nortethisterone are great. Commonly used to delay periods or for longer term issues. I took them for 2 years once.

Yes, I was prescribed it after a bleed such as yours, alongside progesterone and mefenamic acid, so had to take all 3.

They were very very effective with the only side effect being I felt a bit itchy - a known side effect I think of the progesterone.

Best of luck

Just before I hit menopause these were my lifesaver. My periods were so long and heavy I simply couldn't function.

I'd taken them a couple of times years ago to stop period when going on holiday. Never had any issues or side effects.

I take it a lot to stop my period. Always been fine with them 😊

Noresthisterone is given in the ivf process to stop people’s periods before starting them back up again. There’s lots of people who have taken it therefore and you shouldn’t be worried. As with any medication , however, do look out for side effects listed in the pack. Hoping it helps OP.

I took it for 3 weeks to stop my period for a holiday, no side effects and my period returned to normal straight away after.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 22/04/2020 13:45

Yes several times for holidays. And a friend was put on it for a similar situation until they did a hysterectomy.

That must have been really scary for you Flowers
I've taken them for 4 months continuously and they were fine, now I take them if I need them for a special occasion.

I have terrible periods, extremely heavy and long and at least 2 a month. Very painful and bleed from 'other areas' when I'm on aswell Blush. I took this once before a holiday and I swore never again as it made my bleeding lots heavier than it normally is when I stopped, but everyone else doesn't seem to have had a problem and it definitely sounds like you need it. I've had the tranaxemic acid before aswell but no experience of taking together. This sounds really horrendous so big hugs to you Flowers
