DH using same knife for vegetables/raw chicken

Dontcareforfoodpoisoning · 21/04/2020 19:27

DH cuts up vegetables and raw chicken with the same kitchen knife, without washing the knife in between.

He says he does the veg first, but that it wouldn't matter if he did it the other way around as 'it all goes into the same pan anyway'. AIBU to think that this is absolutely gross?

It's all going to be cooked so not an issue I think

If it was salad or being eaten raw then that would be different

Fluffybutter · 21/04/2020 19:30

If the veg is first then it’s fine but in the grand scheme of things I think if they’re both being cooked together anyway then it makes no difference to which he prepares first

lynzpynz · 21/04/2020 19:30

Is it all going in the same pan e.g. some kind of stir fry? If so then don't see much issue with this tbh as the veg will touch the chicken in the pan anyway surely?

PerplexingWords · 21/04/2020 19:30

If the veg were not to be cooked you’d have a point, but not really otherwise.

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 21/04/2020 19:30

I do the same thing ... Veg first, then deal with the chicken.
Happy to be told it's gross, but laziness prevails, and the knife touches nothing else once it's done the chicken.

Pukkatea · 21/04/2020 19:30

Yeah, if it's going to be cooked through I don't see what difference it makes. The raw chicken also has raw chicken on it!

Ginfordinner · 21/04/2020 19:31

I prepare vegetables before meat to avoid cross contamination, then use the same knife to cut meat, without always washing it first. What can onion, garlic and carrot do to a chicken?

I would never prepare meat first and use the same knife and chopping board for anything else without washing them first.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 21/04/2020 19:31

It’s all going to be cooked anyway so what’s the big deal?

And if it’s all going to be cooked in the same pan then where on Earth do you think the raw chicken juices are going to go anyway before it’s cooked!?

Oblomov20 · 21/04/2020 19:32

I've been doing the same for years. I use the same knife to do chicken pieces, mushrooms, onions, peppers.

Doesn't everyone?

PleaseStopSayingNewNormal · 21/04/2020 19:32

If it's all going to be cooked (to a safe temperature) afterwards, that's fine. My concern is that it's a bad habit to get into. What if someone uses a "raw meat knife" to cut up half an onion to cook, then puts the other half of the onion back in the fridge? The onion is potentially contaminated, and someone might eat it raw at a later date.

I'd avoid it, personally, but if he's careful to only do this when he's cooking everything the "dirty" knife touched, it's fine.

Dontcareforfoodpoisoning · 21/04/2020 19:33

It's the fact he'll prep veg after chicken that I have an issue with. It just seems yuck to me, but maybe I am actually being unreasonable Grin. Yes, it's a stir-fry.

Nottherealslimshady · 21/04/2020 19:33

If veg is first its definitely fine. If it's all going straight in the same pan and being cooked, it's no different. The only thing that would worry me is if he's cutting veg after raw meat that isn't being cooked.

tealandteal · 21/04/2020 19:33

I cut the veg, put it in a bowl, cut chicken with same knife then brown chicken in the pan. The add veg. Maybe he does something like that?

AppleKatie · 21/04/2020 19:33

Yep I’m with your husband here.

Obviously I’d do the veg first then meat then chopping board/knife straight in the dishwasher.

I’m and presumably you aren’t dead yet.

SarahAndQuack · 21/04/2020 19:33

Since he's doing the veg first obviously it is fine.

If he were to do the chicken first it might matter if it were something like a stir fry where you don't necessarily cook all veg for very long. If it were, say, onions and potatoes to cook underneath a roast chicken, or veg for a chicken stew, it wouldn't matter.

redwoodmazza · 21/04/2020 19:34

I prepare veg first and then the meat - but I do have a different knife for each for effectiveness. I wouldn't think this a problem if he did veg first.

Dontcareforfoodpoisoning · 21/04/2020 19:36

Yes, I'll admit veg first doesn't really bother me, but he doesn't see a problem with doing it the other way round. I feel instinctively grossed out by the thought.

Kimbaland · 21/04/2020 19:36

I do it all the time and even use the same chopping board.

Still alive and fit and well

cheeseislife8 · 21/04/2020 19:37

I do veg then meat but use the same knife and wash in between. DH is a chef and insists that everything needs it's own chopping board/knife though

CaryStoppins · 21/04/2020 19:37

If it all goes in the same pan then what's the problem?

You're worried about raw chicken juice from the knife getting on the veg, but raw chicken juice is going to get on the veg in the pan anyway.

TurnOffTheTv · 21/04/2020 19:38

In your first post you said he does the veg first then in your second you say he does the chicken first?

TroysMammy · 21/04/2020 19:38

Veg first then chicken but always use a red chopping board because of the raw chicken.

notacooldad · 21/04/2020 19:42

If the veg were not to be cooked you’d have a point, but not really otherwise
Why?
The veg would be chopped and wouldn'tneed touching again by the knive. Unless I've misunderstood?

vanillandhoney · 21/04/2020 19:42

If it's all being cooked together then what's the problem?

Ninkanink · 21/04/2020 19:43

If it’s all being cooked thoroughly then there’s absolutely no problem at all.

In a stir fry that might not be the case, but since he sliced up the veg first it’s still fine.
