DH using same knife for vegetables/raw chicken

Dontcareforfoodpoisoning · 21/04/2020 19:27

DH cuts up vegetables and raw chicken with the same kitchen knife, without washing the knife in between.

He says he does the veg first, but that it wouldn't matter if he did it the other way around as 'it all goes into the same pan anyway'. AIBU to think that this is absolutely gross?

@TurnOffTheTv yes, my first post was maybe a bit unclear. He does the veg first, but says he wouldn't see a problem with doing the meat first, which is what grossed me out.

It makes zero difference if all cooked.

lazylinguist · 21/04/2020 19:46

Personally I'd always side with the person going by logic, not the one going by grossed-outness. The veg is going to be touching the chicken in the pan. Everything will be cooked. How could it possibly matter?

Ninkanink · 21/04/2020 19:48

In any cooked dish but a stir fry that wouldn’t be a problem - as long as it’s all heated through to the required temperature it’s absolutely fine. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to eat the meat...

If he sliced some raw chicken first and then cut up all the salad veg, that would be different.

aladyofinderterminateage · 21/04/2020 19:49

Always prepare veg first then meat. As pp have said, veg is cooked for less time.
I use different knives and boards anyway because I am old enough to have done domestic science at school.
I can count the number of tummy upsets in my family on one hand. (32 years)

Oysterbabe · 21/04/2020 19:55

He's right I'm afraid.

HandfulOfDust · 21/04/2020 19:58

He does the veg first so it's obviously fine. Even if he did the chicken first if they were all going to be cooked together I couldn't get worked up about it. I wouldn't chop raw chicken then chop tomatoes for a salad obviously.

Azera · 21/04/2020 20:06

That for me personally is bleugh but I’m so paranoid about raw chicken

Thymelord · 21/04/2020 20:09

I agree with him. It's being cooked so what's the issue.

cheeseismydownfall · 21/04/2020 20:16

For cooked meals I will often do meat first and then veg with the same knife. Never been ill as a result! I'll switch to a different knife and board if there are any last minute additions that won't be properly cooked through (fresh herbs etc).

Makeitgoaway · 21/04/2020 20:17

Yep, he's fine as he is.

SerenDippitty · 21/04/2020 20:24

When DH does stir fry he uses separate knives and chopping boards, the chicken goes into the oil first and gets cooked, then moved to the side, the veg then added and stirred up with the chicken.

DrWAnker · 21/04/2020 20:28

I do this.
Deal with meat, then whilst it's browning I chop the veg. Same knife, same board.
It's all being cooked so no issue.
I have a seperate board for salad/eaten raw veg but I use the same (washed) knives for everything.

AmelieTaylor · 21/04/2020 20:33

You're happy to eat a dead chicken, but you get all squirmy about your veg being cut up with the same knife, even though it's being cooked?

Me think it's not us vegetarians that are weird 🤪

TheWordmeister · 21/04/2020 20:37

Wouldn't bother me a jot.

endoflevelbaddy · 21/04/2020 21:11

Yep, same board / knife for anything that's being cooked. Separate if preparing a salad or something uncooked to go alongside it.

riotlady · 21/04/2020 22:32

If it’s all going in the same pan it’s going to touch each other anyway?

Dontcareforfoodpoisoning · 21/04/2020 23:05

Guess the consensus is that I'm being U. DH will be pleased Grin.

You shouldn't spread raw chicken bacteria around the kitchen in any way. As long as he cuts up veg first and then chicken, that's OK. Other way round not ok due to spreading. That's why it is advised not to wash raw chicken these days - to avoid spreading the bacteria around.

HandfulOfDust · 21/04/2020 23:12

OP you're doing AIBU all wrong you're meant to get massively defensive then eventually go off on a flounce.

SarahAndQuack · 21/04/2020 23:12

It's not been 'advised' to wash raw chicken for a decades.

SarahAndQuack · 21/04/2020 23:14

Cross post.

YY, OP, you are being far too gracious! Wink

Hope whatever dish your DH cooked was tasty in the end.

Dontcareforfoodpoisoning · 21/04/2020 23:29

@SarahAndQuack it was! He even sprinkled some spring onion on top, which he assured me had been cut up separately. Grin

Stir-fry fine

Just to say a point.

Raw, unwashed vegetables are a risk of e-coli

I wouldn't cut raw unwashed carrots and unpeeled onion etc. Then chop a salad or make a sandwich

Anything that will be heated is ok

Anything ready to eat keep separate, clean hands, board and knife

Also don't defrost veg (sweet corn/ green beans) for salads.
Boil first

People have died from listeria from defrosted frozen sweet corn

And died from e-coli on raw supermarket vegetables

It doesn't happen that often but proven sourced cases in this country

Stella8686 · 21/04/2020 23:39

I watched a friend at a kids party BBQ raw chicken from a plate to the BBQ then back to the same plate for serving

I had to tell him, he tried to backtrack but I'd been watching as I was sat in a garden chair with a sleeping child on me, nothing better to do than watch him and I'm glad I did
