DH using same knife for vegetables/raw chicken

DH cuts up vegetables and raw chicken with the same kitchen knife, without washing the knife in between.

He says he does the veg first, but that it wouldn't matter if he did it the other way around as 'it all goes into the same pan anyway'. AIBU to think that this is absolutely gross?

I don’t see the problem with getting raw chicken from the knife on the veg? You’re putting it all in the pan together so it gets covered in raw chicken anyway!

In theory it's all going in the same pan so it doesn't matter. For me veg first, chicken second is ok with the same unwashed knife.
But chicken first - I would always wash the knife and my hands after preparing raw chicken before touching anything else.

Agree Amelie!

I watched a friend at a kids party BBQ raw chicken from a plate to the BBQ then back to the same plate for serving Now that actually is gross no wonder people get food poisoning at BBQs!

I put YABU, but actually I would never do it (cut vegies with a chicken knife). I think that you have to be strict because so much of what we do is without thinking so habits are important.

Yeah, you're right, OP. I'm changing my vote.

Glad it was good! Smile

I cut chicken breasts up with scissors. It's miles easier Grin

It’s poor practice in a professional kitchen.

Chefs are trained to turn their board over and use a different knife, or use the colour coded boards (red for raw meat)

I do agree though that the risk is minimal if everything is going to be cooked.

A professional kitchen is different.

I use the same chopping board for everything.

I cut and chop all veg first, then whatever meat I’m using.

If for whatever reason I have to use the chopping board for raw meat first, I either turn it over and switch knife, or wash both it and the knife and then continue.

If everything is going to be cooked thoroughly (in a pasta sauce, curry or casserole, for example) then there’s no need to worry and everything gets chopped up on the same board with the same knife.
