I'm wondering if I'm spending more than necessary during the lockdown.

Anyone care to share what your grocery bills are weekly during the lockdown?

I tried to a pretend food shop for £40 and got lost, sorry!

Pre corona I ate out - a lot. Probably most days and sometimes twice in one day so only spent £20 or so on food shopping.

Now I'm spending circa £170 a week for me and adult daughter (and cats). I'm a very lazy cook and hate doing it so although we are pretty much cooking from scratch we do use things like microwave rice.

I've saved a packet this month !

ofwarren · 22/04/2020 00:43

We were spending £100 a week but are now spending £200.
2 adults, 1 teen, 2 kids and 6 cats.

MariahLairy · 22/04/2020 01:29

@judemom
I am also spending more per week on food shopping than I used to, for 3 reasons:

  • buying from the nearest shop rather than Aldi
  • branded products sometimes being the only thing left rather than my usual non-branded that I would buy
  • buying a few extra treats to keep myself happy amongst this pandemic

However, I just wanted to reply to your question about how someone does a low-cost shop. I live alone and my weekly shop is usually about £10-15 and never above £20, as this is the budget I need to keep to.

I usually buy a store cupboard/freezer item such as a bag of pasta or rice or frozen veg with every shop, so my weekly shop often relies on me already having some pasta in the cupboard or gravy granules or teabags in the cupboard, etc.

But here's an example of all the food that I might buy in a week:

£2 box of 24 weetabix = 8 breakfasts
£1 milk - lasts the week as I only have it on weetabix, and the occasional tea
£4.89 1kg of chicken breast for dinners, lasts the week
75p coconut milk
30p chopped tomatoes
£1 chocolate
£2.20 for 12 eggs - that's lunch every day sorted, with veg
£1 bag of frozen mixed veg lasts the week
60p onions
30p garlic
60p bag of rice, lasts the week

And I'll already have spices and other frozen veg in my kitchen

That's a pretty full shop for me, and that's about £15. As a single person, it's not every week that I have to buy loo roll or handwash or shampoo or anything like that! So probably a pound or two at most added for that.

But to answer your corona question, I'm adding in extra bars of chocolate, and carby deliciousness that I wouldn't usually buy such as English muffins and butter, so it's becoming more like £25 a week rather than £15.

Mine is a bit high, tho big tesco order before , official lockdown, £46 a Week over a month for puss and I. ( that included toilet rolls/ kitchen rolls too)
I bulk buy eco washing up liquid, laundry liquid, eco bleach and conditioner.
Should be a cheaper month as now well stocked

millymaple · 22/04/2020 01:41

£100-120 a week, for an online shop including absolutely everything from cat food and cleaning products to alcohol.

millymaple · 22/04/2020 01:42

We could spend less (we used to spend £70-80 a week) but we aren’t buying much else.

judemom · 22/04/2020 01:44

@MariahLairy

Thank you for your list!

I do appreciate your response, if the unfortunate times comes for us, I'll have a list of food to last to cut back.

Same as pp we eat cereal or toast for braeakfast, eggs/ sandwiches/ soup for luch, bulk out meat dishes with vegetables or pulses, one pack of chicken one of mince is more than enough for us for a week usually with leftovers to put in the freezer.
Any veg that looks a bit sad gets chopped and put in the freezer for the next week or added to soup.
Good stock rotation saves waste and money, often my ds will say can i have a chocolate biscuit, if i know there is yogurts or fruit that needs using i make him eat those first.

Nsky · 22/04/2020 01:53

I spend more weekly for puss and I, tho I tend to have what I want!
I think £40:is fab for 2 of you, I don’t tend to meal plan tho

Myfriendanxiety · 22/04/2020 01:56

Around £90 for 2 adults, a preschooler and baby. It was about £70 before. We used to go to Aldi but are using various delivery and click and collects instead.

Bananacake20 · 22/04/2020 06:15

We usually spend between £60-£70 a week for two adults which includes toiletries and cleaning products etc as well.

We now spend about £80. Mainly due to having to buy more expensive brands of things if the cheaper items we usually buy are out of stock.

user1487194234 · 22/04/2020 06:31

Normally £200 a week
Now closer to £300
2 adults and 2 teenagers

Bedsheets4knickers · 22/04/2020 06:35

100 per week family of 4 .

AnduinsGirl · 22/04/2020 06:36

About 150 a week for 2 adults and 3 cats. I know it's too much but we do like a drink and get all our meat from the local farm shop, which isnt the cheapest.

TriangleBingoBongo · 22/04/2020 06:45

@MoonBlood I’ve been getting my flour from a local cake maker. Shes only been charging what you usually pay in the shops too. Maybe try some near you?

KittyVonCatsworth · 22/04/2020 06:59

About £80-90 a week for 2 of us. A Mindful Chef box of 4 meals for about £60 and then bread, eggs, cheese, milk, veg and fruit for lunches/breakfast. We do have a lot of stuff still left on our freezer for meals on the other 3 days and reasonably stocked cupboards of tomatoes, rice, spices etc. I did notice the lack of deals in the supermarket for things such as shampoo, cleaning products so if I need them it can be more expensive.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/04/2020 07:03

Before lockdown it was about £50 per week (family of 2, myself and 6yo DS). Now it's about £70-£80 per week. DS was getting free school meals as he's KS1 so I'm buying extra for his lunches now. Plus extra stuff for baking, extra alcohol Grin and extra bits like toilet roll as we're using more being at home.

Growingboys · 22/04/2020 07:08

£400 a week on Ocado. Family of five incl teens.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 22/04/2020 07:12

£160 per week for two adults

Travelonbusiness · 22/04/2020 07:13

Must be £200 a week currently, easily although I would say around £60 of that is wine.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 22/04/2020 07:15

Though can be nearer £200 / week (x2 adults)

Tellmetruth4 · 22/04/2020 07:16

About £250 all in including groceries, cleaning products, personal hygiene stuff etc.

2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs.

I think although we used to spend less on the weekly shop pre lock down, we also used to eat out and get takeaways/home deliveries, go pub etc so spent more overall.

Yester · 22/04/2020 07:21

It's a huge difference for us get on £90 to around £150 (2 adults, 2 teens who never stop eating and a 10 year old)
Shopping at Tescos instead of Aldi has been the main issue. Can't get half the stuff at Aldi as lots of food allergies and intolerances. Usually split shop.

GlamGiraffe · 22/04/2020 07:24

Normally spend 170ish every 6 weeks at aldi then top up with 8 pints of milk, bread if necessary and fruit and veg . Usually a max of about 75-80 per week.
Have had to order from tesco and sainsbury online now and the cost of their fruit and veg alone is insane. Much of their every day stuff is ultra expensive too including cleaning products and washing powder. A lot of their stuff is poor quality compared to my local aldi in terms of freshness. I'm paying about 150 a week now (that's over and above my stash of items like pasta and rice, pulses peppa pig spaghetti tins🙄 and tea, which I always have about 6 months supply of!
