To think people shouldn't walk to my village?

Hello,

With the knowledge that this will make me sound quite snooty, I firstly apologise and explain it is because I worry for my own and family's safety as we are all asthmatic and at heightened risk from COVID-19.

We live in a very pretty little village, in a small conservation area in a semi rural location. We are about 2 miles from the nearest modern housing estate. Usually, the lane through the village has a couple of regular dog walkers.

Now that we are lockdown and people are getting out to exercise in the sun (great), the lane is like a motorway. There is a constant stream of people from the housing estate coming for their walk to the village. I understand it must be dull to walk around a modern housing estate. Over 500m there were 30 people. Usually you might see 1. We can't even go for a short walk without risk of coming into contact with people.

Entire large families are coming with 5-6 children out of control on bikes etc, treating the lane past our houses like a park. I've spotted people touching our walls, gates etc, even caught one nosing in the garden!

Many of these people are not staying into the side to observe social distancing, and have dogs off the lead that need to be fetched away.

AIBU to think people should stick to their own areas for their exercise? In a way, I something feel that if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

Do you live in Castle Cary - they are not too keen on new comers there!

LondonJax · 21/04/2020 16:18

Maybe everyone should keep to their 'own' area OP....

Of course, that means you won't be able to go to the bigger supermarkets. Because if it's anything like it is around here, our smaller villages have a village shop if they're lucky. We, in our market town, have the bigger shops. Maybe we should introduce a pass scheme and a toll booth. Keep those villagers out!

AllPlayedOut · 21/04/2020 16:18

I live rurally and rarely see people about but in the past month its increased. Why now? Where the hell are they the rest of the year?

At work?

workercovid · 21/04/2020 16:20

I don't know really. In order to make a judgement I would need to know if the housing estate was a modern one or not?

BikeRunSki · 21/04/2020 16:21

Presumably you are Lady of the Manor, and it’s a tied village on your estate? In which case, YWNBU yo put in some toll gates to keep the riff raff out.

No? Then YABVU. Bear this in mind when you need the amenities of a town.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 21/04/2020 16:21

You sound so ghastly; I hope that the invaders drop crisp wrappers in your garden and graffiti on your precious walls.

sussexmum · 21/04/2020 16:23

🤣🤣😀 for this ONE chat I have seen at least 3 more where small-time landowners and farmers are cursing walkers for daring to exercise their kids locally, and for the most part, responsibly. in the last week I have seen stupid signs put up on stiles, footpaths, been harangued and threatened for walking and expressing an opinion on here. it's just part of our daily difficulties we we are all on this together

VivaLeBeaver · 21/04/2020 16:25

Sadly there are people stupid enough and horrible enough to think like this.

One bell end acquaintance of mine posted a similar diatribe on her FB page. Full of rage that people may choose to walk on a path near her house. Twat.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 21/04/2020 16:30

Have you ever wondered whether heaven will be like Swansea, OP?

sussexmum · 21/04/2020 16:32

Smilethis crisis sure does bring some strange selfish traits out doesn't it, I thought everyone on here was against families exercising in their local countryside!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 21/04/2020 16:33

I decided not to post my original comment because it got too rude.

I'll content myself with a Biscuit

Purpletigers · 21/04/2020 16:34

I live rurally . About 2 miles from our village . Lots of people/ couples / families have started walking a loop from and back to the village. This loop includes the road I live off . I don’t own it and it’s lovely to see lots of people out and about with their children enjoying this lovely weather . I would feel differently if they were walking though our fields where our livestock are grazing but they’re not .

caperberries · 21/04/2020 16:34

Yes you sound unpleasantly snooty, but I can empathise to some extent. We live near the countryside and I have a favourite run nearby through the surrounding fields and forests. Ordinarily, I don't encounter anyone on this route. Since Lockdown started, it's like Hyde Park on a sunny afternoon. I've all but abandoned my runs now because it's so stressful trying to avoid them all, especially as a lot of them walk three or four abreast & appear to have no concept of social distancing.

But, the lack of social distancing aside, these people obviously have as much right to be there as me - and so do the people walking on 'your' local laneways.

isabellerossignol · 21/04/2020 16:35

At a different level this is how gang warfare operates.

Maybe the OP wants gang warfare. The people from the new builds can come with their silver and grey accessories from Next Home, and have a showdown with the OP, who will fight them with her artfully mismatched one off finds that she picked up at a rural market in France.

Home42 · 21/04/2020 16:37

I live in a small village and am one of the regular dog walking folks. I walk similar routes twice daily and didn’t used to see anyone except my fellow dog walkers. Now the flat / easy routes are full of the halt and the lame 😁.

This means me and my dog walking fellows are using the more hilly and remote paths.

I think whilst it’s a bit annoying having all these people all over our normally empty village it’s perfectly understandable. I’d go nuts if I couldn’t get out. I’m happy to use the less traveled paths to make space for others.

Leflic · 21/04/2020 16:38

All in it together!

I know what you mean though. I’m not a fan of people at the best of times but it’s quite annoying all the nice quiet spots are now exactly like the twin park.

Chillicheese123 · 21/04/2020 16:38

Why is every fucker and their goldfish now an asthmatic

I apparently now have four colleagues with asthma, I’ve known them for a while now, no fucking sign of it until they now NEED to post about how they are more AT RISK than everyone else

IWantT0BreakFree · 21/04/2020 16:38

I live rurally and rarely see people about but in the past month its increased. Why now? Where the hell are they the rest of the year?

At work, visiting relatives, at playgrounds, at the beach, in shopping centres, at museums. You are aware that there's something of a situation currently ongoing?

ilovesooty · 21/04/2020 16:39

The OP probably has a village pub like The Slaughtered Lamb in An American Werewolf From London.

gnushoes · 21/04/2020 16:39

Either you're a troll or a tit.
People are walking more because they cannot take their usual forms of exercise and are basically left with walking or cycling. which usually means going somewhere.

Chillicheese123 · 21/04/2020 16:39

It’s like the numbskulls who say ‘everyone has taken up jogging ! No one jogged before, I was the sole jogger in the village!’ Maybe they were at a GYM? Or a CrossFit place ? Or other organized activity that is now canceled!

Verily1 · 21/04/2020 16:41

The OED can it in this as a new definition of what the word ‘snob’ means!

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 21/04/2020 16:41

Snooty, snobby, self entitled. I hope more pay a visit!

CCaK · 21/04/2020 16:41

How dare the poor leave their estate.

You should charge them £1 a go to look at your garden and see what they're missing.
