To think people shouldn't walk to my village?

Hello,

With the knowledge that this will make me sound quite snooty, I firstly apologise and explain it is because I worry for my own and family's safety as we are all asthmatic and at heightened risk from COVID-19.

We live in a very pretty little village, in a small conservation area in a semi rural location. We are about 2 miles from the nearest modern housing estate. Usually, the lane through the village has a couple of regular dog walkers.

Now that we are lockdown and people are getting out to exercise in the sun (great), the lane is like a motorway. There is a constant stream of people from the housing estate coming for their walk to the village. I understand it must be dull to walk around a modern housing estate. Over 500m there were 30 people. Usually you might see 1. We can't even go for a short walk without risk of coming into contact with people.

Entire large families are coming with 5-6 children out of control on bikes etc, treating the lane past our houses like a park. I've spotted people touching our walls, gates etc, even caught one nosing in the garden!

Many of these people are not staying into the side to observe social distancing, and have dogs off the lead that need to be fetched away.

AIBU to think people should stick to their own areas for their exercise? In a way, I something feel that if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

@chillicheese123 asthmatic here. Why would you know or needs to know we're asthmatic when it's well-controlled? Which mine is. But still means Covid-19 is more likely to kill me than it is you. So now it IS an issue.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 21/04/2020 16:46

@iwalkinmyclothing
Eh? What's Swansea got to do with it? I used to live there. Have I missed something?! Wouldn't be the first time.

Chillicheese123 · 21/04/2020 16:46

@gnushoes I just find it strange that working in a fairly physically demanding job none of these people have inhalers or have ever mentioned being asthmatic. I suspect when they say ‘asthmatic’ they mean they once had a blue inhaler prescribed for a cough four years ago which does a disservice to people living with a very real disease.

I think they just like being able to preface everything they say with ‘I have asthma so...’
one in particular I’m sure once COVID is over they will be back to openly posting their Vaping equipment that they happily puff on all the live long day

NoMoreDickheads · 21/04/2020 16:47

They have just as much right to be there as you. They should be social distancing but that's a different problem really.

Midsommar · 21/04/2020 16:48

Just...wow. Shock

Stabbitha · 21/04/2020 16:50

This virus spread though the rich before it got to the common poor.

You know, those that could afford ski chalets and stuff.

HotCrossBungle · 21/04/2020 16:50

Pretty places are for the well being off; fuck.off plebs!

OP's attitude just about sums up everything that's wrong with this country

ReadilyAvailable · 21/04/2020 16:50

@Chillicheese123 They don’t tattoo your forehead when you’re diagnosed with asthma. How would you know who is and is not asthmatic?

HotCrossBungle · 21/04/2020 16:51

Bollocks. For the well off

VeganCow · 21/04/2020 16:51

Op I REALLY wanna know the answer to this so please respond-

Do any of these walkers bring crisps with them?

CCaK · 21/04/2020 16:52

Actually, how would you even know if someone had an inhaler or not? You can easily carry one every day and not have anyone notice.

ReadilyAvailable · 21/04/2020 16:53

Do any of these walkers bring crisps with them?

And do they sit on benches while they eat them?

gnushoes · 21/04/2020 16:55

@chillicheese123 Since my asthma diagnosis (in my late 30s but my childhood persistent night cough was probably asthma) I've taught myself to run and do about 12 miles a week. I keep myself fit and am a lot fitter than younger friends and colleagues. I use a brown inhaler in the winter (and have kept on with it because of Covid). I could do a physically active job, 99 per cent of the time without recourse to a blue puffer. But give me a cold and it's a different story. What exactly makes you an expert on asthma?

Who mentioned Tories? It’s a fact that the virus was in part imported from skiing resorts in the Alps.

Queenunikitty · 21/04/2020 16:57

Hahaha! Love it! Do you live in my village? We’ve owned here for years but only moved back from abroad a couple of years ago and my kid is in private school so no one knows us. I have been walking around the village during lock down, usually I’m too busy working etc and I’ve noticed people giving me filthy looks in my trackies, trainers and cap. We live in one of the larger properties on the edge of the village and are very private (DC has SN so socialising in public etc doesn’t happen) as a result we’re not known around except for the immediate neighbours. Everyone is entitled to go wherever they want! This is Britain. Snobbish, snotty people are hilarious and so ‘British’! I am a ‘British’ citizen but was born and grew up abroad and my mum is ‘foreign’. Love this thread it it’s giving me life!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/04/2020 16:58

Do any of these walkers bring crisps with them?

We can only golden wonder.

HappySonHappyMum · 21/04/2020 16:59

Pretty little village? Semi rural location? Only two miles away from the nearest modern housing estate? Sounds like your village is perfect for development, maybe you'll have your own modern housing estate in your village soon. Enjoy!

caoraich · 21/04/2020 17:02

I live in a new build estate. My street has the nicest view in the area and it's also very wide. People from the local village are clearly coming past for a walk.

It hasn't crossed my mind to be annoyed by this- they live a couple of miles away so of course they're local. In normal times they'd be at parks, museums, playgrounds or indeed at work!

Oh btw I have asthma too. And I'm a healthcare worker.

Stop being so snooty.

Could you not afford to live somewhere that has a bit of land? Then you’d have plenty of space to walk around on your own property.

GogoGobo · 21/04/2020 17:05

If you’d wanted splendid isolation OP you should have coughed up the extra £750k to live in the Manor House.

starsparkle08 · 21/04/2020 17:05

How rude

Gottobefree · 21/04/2020 17:06

Unless you live in a private lane they can walk where ever they please if it's on a public walk way.

Good thing you paid that extra £100k to live in a village and not a busy city Grin

Libertylee · 21/04/2020 17:08

You’re the same kind of person who complains because cars park on “their” road.

Sparklesocks · 21/04/2020 17:08

Amazing. MN never stops reminding me about how obscenely entitled a portion of the world is!
