To think people shouldn't walk to my village?

Hello,

With the knowledge that this will make me sound quite snooty, I firstly apologise and explain it is because I worry for my own and family's safety as we are all asthmatic and at heightened risk from COVID-19.

We live in a very pretty little village, in a small conservation area in a semi rural location. We are about 2 miles from the nearest modern housing estate. Usually, the lane through the village has a couple of regular dog walkers.

Now that we are lockdown and people are getting out to exercise in the sun (great), the lane is like a motorway. There is a constant stream of people from the housing estate coming for their walk to the village. I understand it must be dull to walk around a modern housing estate. Over 500m there were 30 people. Usually you might see 1. We can't even go for a short walk without risk of coming into contact with people.

Entire large families are coming with 5-6 children out of control on bikes etc, treating the lane past our houses like a park. I've spotted people touching our walls, gates etc, even caught one nosing in the garden!

Many of these people are not staying into the side to observe social distancing, and have dogs off the lead that need to be fetched away.

AIBU to think people should stick to their own areas for their exercise? In a way, I something feel that if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

@puffinandkoala oh that brought back memories of my own curtain twitching mother. We lived in a cul-de-sac too and she HATED anyone she didn’t recognise coming into it. I used to cringe every time she’d start tutting and shuttering on as she stood in the window, hands on hips.

Notcoolmum · 21/04/2020 17:39

Yes. YABU. You don't own the village or the countryside.

woodencoffeetable · 21/04/2020 17:39

this must be a reverse. surely no mumsnetter is sooo possessive about public roads.

RedRedScab · 21/04/2020 17:40

This says it all OP. Maybe you should've coughed up an extra million so you could have a bit more land around you..?

Jezebel101 · 21/04/2020 17:43

I live in a beautiful seaside town, and at the weekends and all summer there is a constant influx from lesser areas. Ugh, how dare they come to my town and look at my views and sit outside my coffee shops and walk my streets. Some of them even touch my walls and smile at my neighbours.

Or:

Because of the visitors to my town we have a thriving restaurant and coffee house scene, the public walkways are well maintained and summer is a series of outdoor events and family festivals that people from all around come to enjoy. I'm really privileged to live in such a lovely spot, and I'm delighted it's shared with everyone. Especially at the moment when people from neighbouring spots walk in and enjoy the seafront walks. It's a spot of sunshine in the grim reality of the times.

OP, get over yourself.

dottiedodah · 21/04/2020 17:43

This whole thread smacks of snobbery and being petty minded to me .How appalling you have to have all these people coming past YOUR house! looking in your garden ? How frightful for you .What on earth does Jerry have to say about it Margo ? You will just have to send Tom and Barbara out there to scare them off in their Rotary lawnmower ,wont you!!.

iklboo · 21/04/2020 17:52

Do any of these walkers bring crisps with them?

Yes. Walkers Crisps.

mumwon · 21/04/2020 17:54

newsflash - YOU DONT OWN THE PAVEMENT OR THE ROAD its public they pay rates to maintain this just the same as you - don't like it dont look

formerbabe · 21/04/2020 17:56

You buy a house. You don't buy a village. It's not yours.

Hth

@Bohwens Your last paragraph is disgusting. You certainly lost all sympathy from me here. So you are saying, no poor allowed basically. Nice.

BubblesBuddy · 21/04/2020 17:57

I would not want you in my area OP! I doubt you could afford it!

Abreadsandwich · 21/04/2020 18:07

Has OP been back?

pootlepootle · 21/04/2020 18:07

This is the way hell lies.

When people start feeling like they can actually say this stuff out loud.

Pinkblueberry · 21/04/2020 18:08

I think OP would have got a rather different response if she hadn't let the mask slip with her if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here line

Agreed. Some of the village posters on MN make me realise that I’m very happy I don’t live in a village to be honest - they look pretty on the outside but I think most the neighbours would be snobby, stuck up twats from the things I read on here. I’d rather save 100k, travel a little bit further to my nearest ‘beautiful walk’, and live amongst decent people.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/04/2020 18:08

But OP if these poor housing estate types didn’t exist who would you have to feel superior to?

How would anyone know how refined you are if you didn’t have anyone to look down on.

I am torn between Edward and Tubbs and this

Sparklingbrook · 21/04/2020 18:09

This is the sort of thread that makes me think the OP gone ‘watch this’ to their friends just as they posted. And is now in fits of laughter.

Trying2310 · 21/04/2020 18:18

Imagine the paupers walking past your house and touching the walls. 🙄 God help you!

You sound ridiculous and this has to be a wind up.

ARoseInHarlem · 21/04/2020 18:28

YOUR village? You bought the whole thing, bought the roads off the council, the lot?

If so then YANBU. If you bought a house in a village, you’re a prick.

LEELULUMPKIN · 21/04/2020 18:38

When this is all over I am going to charter a bus so we can all march through OP's village and stand staring in at her windows like the kids on The Village of the damned.

Who's with me?

hesgotit · 21/04/2020 18:40

Are there many bridges in your village OP? 🙄

TheMostHappy · 21/04/2020 18:42

Wowza. Who are you to say where people can and can't walk to for their exercise. That's bonkers. So long as they're practicing safe and responsible social distancing, I really couldn't get myself worked up about it.

opticaldelusion · 21/04/2020 18:43

On the off-chance this isn't a wind up...

SNOB, SNOB, SNOB, SNOB, SNOB, NASTY SNOB.

brendansbuddy · 21/04/2020 18:43

This is so goady and cannot be real Grin

brendansbuddy · 21/04/2020 18:43

The OP I mean..

transformandriseup · 21/04/2020 18:46

if they wanted beautiful walks outside their front-door they should have coughed up the extra £100k to live here...

Completely unreasonable and I also live in a very picturesque and pricey village. Two miles isn't far and your area is local to them.
