To think passing stones around is silly

A woman in our village has started a painted stone scheme to lift spirits.
It's all over the local facebook group, people are painting stones, leaving them for others to pick up, hide somewhere else, and move them on.
Everyone thinks it's great.
A woman even tried to give me a stone, she held her hand out for me to take it.
AIBU to think this is just silly?
I'm not exactly one of those disinfecting or quarantining my mail, but this seems reckless to me.
I know if I speak up on the fb groups I'll be dismissed as a killjoy.

It's been around for ages. I wasn't all that much of a fan until in read some of the Facebook posts about children and adults with additional needs who had been delighted to fine one and took great care to re hide it, checking daily to see if it had gone.

Now, I don't do them myself but do smile whenever I aee one 'in the wild'

I know it has been around for a while.
I just wonder whether it is wise to start such a scheme at the moment.

I thought you just left them somewhere for kids to find on walks and they moved them to a new location. That’s fine. Passing to people by hand is stupid.

Seeline · 21/04/2020 11:52

The stones are popular in our area, but it is being made very clear that they are just to be looked for, not touched or re-hidden. It's obvious isn't it?!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 21/04/2020 12:06

No, it's not obvious. People are posting photos of them on the fb group saying "found this, re-hid".
Sometimes the photos show the stone in their hands.

Is this part of our Governments 'herd immunity' scheme? Hmm

Inapickleortwo · 21/04/2020 12:10

We do this in our village and the surrounding public walking routes. It's brilliant! It not only makes walks with a 5/6 year old fun but means we don't get the 'my legs hurt/I want to go home/this is boring' within minutes of leaving our road so me and DP can stretch off our legs adequately. It's a bit of no harm fun. If you don't like it just don't participate.

AmelieTaylor · 21/04/2020 12:13

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Worry less about being a 'killjoy' and more about saving the idiots from themselves! Or the vulnerable from them. IDIOTS

JasonPollack · 21/04/2020 12:16

I bloody hate the things. We live in a lovely natural area and they get everywhere. I don't want to hike to a secluded beach to see a parade of shitty artwork. Mostly people seem to just do them to then whine on Facebook about people not rehiding them.

You know what we look out for on walks? Birds. Interesting plants. Nice smells on the breeze.

One step away IMO from leaving your dogshit bags hanging from trees. Bloody intrusive.

Sorry everyone, as you were.

madcatladyforever · 21/04/2020 12:16

A village near me has got scarecrows, they have a massive problem with speeding as the high street is a rat run, they have a scarecrow done up as a policeman with a speed gun, it's so realistic you actually do slow down and various other hilarious and clever scarecrows along the road holding up go slow signs. It really does work as everyone slows down to have a look.

HermanTheWorm · 21/04/2020 12:21

It's a stupid idea currently, because the virus lives on surfaces for a while.

Same reason we aren't allowed to use the swing parks.

Problem is, that some of us have kids with extra needs who don't understand why we aren't allowed to do something (in the first place) and then see others doing what we aren't allowed to.

My palm is permanently stapled to my face.

Thelnebriati · 21/04/2020 12:24

I hate painted stones, the paint is often plastic based. Its a pollutant. Its no better than using spray paint to tag a rock.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 21/04/2020 12:27

If you don't like it just don't participate.

It's not that I don't like it - I think it's a lot of fun.
It's the same people participating in this that are also posting "stay the fuck at home" videos...

LilQueenie · 21/04/2020 12:55

so wash your hands as you would do anyway. Its not silly and and no harm is being done. painting stones like this has been happening for a couple years.

PatchworkElmer · 21/04/2020 12:59

Meh. We’re partaking in ours- mostly we just look, but DS knows that if he wants to pick them up, he needs to put his gloves on. Then I wash the gloves when we get home.

PotholeParadise · 21/04/2020 13:01

It's silly to do it at the moment.

LilQueenie · 21/04/2020 13:02

wait you can post stay at home messages and have your daily walk. So long as you are not out mingling with others.

bridgetreilly · 21/04/2020 13:05

Normally: annoying but mostly harmless.

Right now: really, really, really bloody stupid way of unnecessarily spreading a deadly virus.

Makeitgoaway · 21/04/2020 13:06

I've never liked this. It seems to me like a cross between vandalism and littering but I often find myself out of kilter with the majority view Grin

Having read a lot about the way this thing is transmitted, I don't think there's much risk of transmission from momentarily touching something someone else has touched, especially when (presumably,as they were out of the house) they had no symptoms. Theoretically possible yes, but likely, no.

Makeitgoaway · 21/04/2020 13:08

"My palm is permanently stapled to my face."

Come on, you know you're not allowed to do that Grin

Porpoises · 21/04/2020 13:08

Yes but you need to avoid touching things that other people have touched. Covid lives on surfaces. www.webmd.com/lung/how-long-covid-19-lives-on-surfaces

So having stones that people pick up is not a sensible game right now.

UponTheBlueGuitar · 21/04/2020 13:10

Where do you get shitable stones from? My daughter wanted to do this but our garden didn't yield anything she could draw or paint on.

UponTheBlueGuitar · 21/04/2020 13:10

suitable* Hmm

stardance · 21/04/2020 13:11

It's been happening here for a while but has stopped at the moment for obvious reasons. Some people are posting photos on the Facebook group of the rocks they've been painting but won't be hiding them until it's safe to do so.
