Surprised at healthy people saying they won’t send dc to school until there’s a vaccination

I absolutely understand that if your dc has a health condition there’s no way you would put in any situation where they could catch covid. Likewise if you or your partner have a health condition or other vulnerable dc. However I am baffled as to why you would not want your healthy dc getting back to school and their friends ASAP but want to wait for a vaccination. That could be years! As long as the vulnerable population remains safe self isolating I cannot understand why there is such horror at the thought of schools reopening.

Martin Lewis on twitter says they are trialing a vaccine on humans starting Thursday at Oxford.

Popcornriver · 21/04/2020 19:38

LittleFoxKit

I agree. And that makes me even less likely to send them to school if they reopen soon. Other countries easing lock downs are stating the public should wear masks to help prevent a second outbreak. In the UK we have medical experts stating if we did it then our NHS staff/carers will go without. If the government can't provide safe and effective ways to reduce the spread then I can't send my children to full schools and send them there on public transport.

Devlesko · 21/04/2020 19:39

Oh well, if Martin Lewis says so. Confused

Quartz2208 · 21/04/2020 19:43

to be fair Martin Lewis is repeating Matt Hancock at the briefing

sunshineanddaffodils · 21/04/2020 19:43

@Bartlet I absolutely agree with you.

The vaccine trials due to start this week are also reported on in the news. There's an article on the BBC

Bartlet · 21/04/2020 19:46

Just because they’re starting trials does not mean that it will succeed, get through all necessary testing and licensing hurdles and enter mass production any time soon. Realistic estimates are 12-18 months. Are people really going to shut their kids away from school, friends, clubs for this long? The effects on mental health and life prospects?

It was covered on the Andrew Marr show, it's on catchup. Sarah from Oxford University gave an interview about it. She also talks about receptor cells and why we think men suffer more and why children don't.
They've set up a manufacturing base, even though it hasn't passed, just in case.
Even though they own the intellectual rights the uk might not be the first to get it, which oddly hasn't been picked up anywhere. She did say that it's an easy and cheap vaccine to make. They are using chimpanzee adenovirus.

In the science pages on Covid today it's thought that children don't transmit it at the rate of adults.
The boy who came back with it from sking was in contact with 170 people but none of them got it, but his siblings did pick up the cold and normal flu that he had. He was given it by the first person in the UK to get it, who went sking from being in China.

How the virus gets into the receptor cells and viral dose/load was covered on the Horizon special. That was interesting.

Bartlet, Sarah Gilvert said it'll be the back end of winter. They've removed the usual barriers so they can get it out quickly. They know that the ingredients are safe, it's if it works.

She does say that it might not be as effective for elderly people and that will take longer. But they should be protected by herd immunity by then. To a similar level of ordinary flu.

Greysparkles · 21/04/2020 20:01

What are these barriers they're removing?

Bartlet · 21/04/2020 20:03

You believe that we’ll have a properly tested, mass produced vaccine widely available and rolled out to the 60 million plus people in this country in about 10 months time.

I don’t believe that it is possible. You have a scientist who says that it’s possible in principle. There are loads of others who don’t agree. I’m happy to be proved wrong.

pokemongrief · 21/04/2020 20:09

I suppose people can say the children will be mildly affected but they can bring it back to their families, who will spread it further. On an objective level most people would say reopen schools early summer, but people are protective of their own children, so are subjective.

sunshineanddaffodils · 21/04/2020 20:22

I’d love to hear from some teachers who would like to see schools opening before September. I get the vibe from ones on MN that any suggestion that schools may open sooner than that sends them into mega defensive mode.

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 20:26

No, the 'vibe' you got is that people have decided we are lazy if we challenge people's assumptions that schools can safely return, or that schools returning will provide a full, 'normal' education.

Many of us want to return, not least because aspects of our jobs are easier at actual work.

And we aren't alone :

www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-nhs-workers-call-keep-teachers-safe

But we want to have assurance sin place that it is at least as safe as it can be for all stakeholders.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 20:28

Why would you like to hear by the way?

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 20:29

By the way, telling people they are mega defensive does tend to have only one outcome....

Justgorgeous · 21/04/2020 20:53

Many healthy people have died. Nobody knows if their body is capable of fighting this virus.

I don't think the OP means in the holiday to be fair. She means June / July....

Ihavenoregrets · 21/04/2020 21:21

Ah yes.....I have asked MN to remove my comment.

SOrry, one of those was a duplicate and should have been this one:

People don’t necessarily discuss their underlying health issues with others. My friends know I am coeliac - but I have never told them that by being a coeliac the nhs considers I have a lesser immune system than others my age and are therefore been offered a flu shot when they came in. Or my husband is a type 2 diabetic and also eligible for the flu shot.
