I feel so stupid right now but can't calm down Sad

I try and work in bed overnight as it's quiet and there's fewer distractions. All was going well tonight and I took a coffee break.

Then a fucking huge spider ran across my bed towards me.

I don't usually mind spiders, and never kill them. But I totally freaked out and killed it.

I live in a first floor flat, and in two years of living here I have never ever come across a spider.

It's a tiny studio, not even room for a sofa or TV. My bed is my office, dining table, sofa and bed. I feel trapped wondering if there's more of the buggers lurking in corners or even if there's a nest somewhere Envy Where the fuck did it come from and I keep imagining working and then having another fucker suddenly crawl over me.

It's irrational I know, but I'm really upset, like I can't relax now in my tiny space. Please talk me down (and reassure me there's not a huge nest in a corner somewhere) Sad

@81Byerley Nooooooooo as lovely as your poem is you are only making me feel more guilty Sad

Now it's daylight and the adrenaline has worn off I just feel like a prat.

A murderous prat.

RIP Fred Sad

@Sparklfairy haha! Sorry! Seriously though, I once read a tip that if you give a name to spiders, it makes them less scary. After that I found it a bit easier to cope with Fred and Mary who lived under my settee and came out from time to time to say hello.

undercoveraessedai · 20/04/2020 10:13

Argh if one ran across my bed I'd be packing the cats and moving to my mum's, lockdown or no lockdown. I think you reacted perfectly reasonably. I've also never had more than one spider at a time in my house even though I live near a field and there are always big fuckers around - you'll be fine. Don't feel guilty!

Skeletoninatutu · 20/04/2020 10:23

Honestly I wouldn't worry... big ones don't tend to travel in packs...it's worse when you whack them and all the baby spiders scatter of the mums back.... now that is fucking horrible! ( and I'm in Aus and not bothered by spiders at all... but baby spiders scattering is startling)
1 spider in 2 years - you're fine!

Sparklfairy · 20/04/2020 10:30

@Skeletoninatutu Fuck. Off. Shock That doesn't really happen!! Please tell me it doesn't cowers in a corner and rocks while whimpering

Between that and the PP that had the haunted house of giant descending ones, I've learned far more than I wanted to and poor Fred (RIP) seems quite tame in comparison! Shock

@81Byerley Honestly I normally don't mind them. If last night he had run across the kitchen or I'd found him in the bath instead, he'd still be alive today Sad

A lesson to all you other spiders if you're lurking here somewhere. You're welcome to stay. Just don't run at my face Grin

Yup indeed it does... the worst is when clearing cobwebs from under the veranda and that occurs and you cop a baby spider shower....

StatementKnickers · 20/04/2020 11:16

@HowFurloughCanYouGo EVERY NIGHT this happened? How the fuck did you stay there more than one night, or in fact past the very first falling spider? And why didn't you do anything about it before selling the place? Confused

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 20/04/2020 11:25

Yes every night.

It was August/September time, I looked it up and it's shagging time for them.
The absolutely massive bastards were the females, descending looking for males to get their rocks off.

But because it had been empty and undisturbed for so long, they had been breeding like rabbits with plenty of places to hide in solitude through the other months of the year.
We rock up and there's a fucking billion of them.
I posted on here in horror. I was told what a bastard I was for killing one.
It was on my baby's LEG though. It was the same size as my babies leg!

Sparklfairy · 20/04/2020 11:25

@StatementKnickers It is like a horror movie isn't it. 'Oh look at us, moving into our beautiful new home!' come nightfall and giant arachnids descend on their heads

I'd have rented it out as an air bnb just for laughs Grin

What could we do?!

Houses have spiders!

The house we bought had all kinds of bugs and crap hiding out.
We have ants and shit loads of woodlouse here.
It's just the way it is.

Sparklfairy · 20/04/2020 11:29

@HowFurloughCanYouGo the more you post the worse I feel! I'm getting the shivers just thinking about it! The SIZE OF YOUR BABY'S LEG Shock

I'm never sleeping again. And every time I get a slight itch today I panic. And it's all because of YOU.

When my daughter was about 2 and not long in her own bed, I was lying beside her and a spider ran over her face - I styled it out and pretended nothing had happened but I now believe we eat 8 spiders in our life time........

LuluBellaBlue · 20/04/2020 12:01

Crazy as this might sound..... but it’s helped me in the past as I used to be terrified of them Grin
Whenever I now have a spider encounter (or other nicer animals such as owls / deer / dragonflies) I google their spiritual meaning, so google ‘spider spirit animal’ - the spider has a fab meaning!

Please help I'm feeling really paranoid about something stupid :(
Sparklfairy · 20/04/2020 12:50

@LuluBellaBlue uh oh, I hope it doesn't mean bad energy or something for me because I killed him Confused Grin

My DM always said when I was a kid that if I killed a spider his massive daddy would come get me Shock I'll look forward to that then!

@HowFurloughCanYouGo I think I remember your thread. You slapped the baby's leg to kill it? I didn't comment but thought it was mental that you were told how cruel you were.
But I can't remember you saying they were descending on you in the hundreds?!! Fucking hell. I have too many questions. Why did you keep sleeping in the house? Did you not run screaming the first night? Did you call an exterminator? Do you have nightmares from it?

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 20/04/2020 13:53

No I didn't slap the baby's leg 😂 He was only 5 months old! 😂
I did kill it though. It was more of a 'brush off and squash down" with speed.

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 20/04/2020 13:54

Look I say hundreds but that's what I guess.

I could see say, 6 at a time, then I would see others scuttling around at the corner of my eye and there was always movement.

So I believe there was a LOT.
But I hundreds is my horrifying reactive descriptive. 😁😁
