Long line of planes flying over or a series of satellites?

We are near the South Coast and there a constant stream of lights going over, equi distant very high up?
Not on Flighttracker.

Can anyone else see them?

Starlink satellites I think ?

Ohdeariedear · 19/04/2020 21:39

According to Twitter they go over again about 10.55?

AliciaWhiskers · 19/04/2020 21:40

There are loads of them! All travelling the same direction, at the same speed. So weird!

notagaincharlie · 19/04/2020 21:41

Why have we never seen them before? All equi distant and same speed....

crambosk · 19/04/2020 21:41

yeah they could be starlink satellites. would be interested to see a pic if you can :)

sonjadog · 19/04/2020 21:42

As others say, probably Starlink satellites. My cousin asked exactly the same question on fb a few weeks back and that is what they were. I think there is a website where you can track them.

notagaincharlie · 19/04/2020 21:48

Tried taking a picture, but nothing really came out....

Yep, they're Starlink satellites.

Thescrewinthetuna · 19/04/2020 21:51

Yep it’s Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites. My 6yo is very into space so we got him out of bed for a look, he was very excited as it’s such a clear night.

crambosk · 19/04/2020 21:51

ok no worries. i think there were some pictures in the news from last year which you could compare with

Slith · 19/04/2020 21:52

Why have we never seen them before?
Because they're only visible for a couple of minutes every night for a month or two after launch until they raise their orbit to the final height.

saveforthat · 19/04/2020 21:52

I can see them too. In South West

LucyAutumn · 19/04/2020 21:52

I've seen this just now and I'm in the east Midlands. Definitely sounded like planes, not perfectly equal distance, especially one that nearly flew past the one in front of it. I counted 12.

Fluandseptember · 19/04/2020 21:53

Starlink. So sinister.

Goingunderground2 · 19/04/2020 21:53

Starlink really freaked us out the first time we saw them, all though I must add every time we have seen them we have seen something "odd" in the sky at a similar time too

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 19/04/2020 21:56

We watched them last night, they're the starlink satelites

justlikejasper · 19/04/2020 21:57

Seen them in Hertfordshire just now

LetMeOutOfHere · 19/04/2020 21:58

Yes, it is trending on twitter.

LucyAutumn · 19/04/2020 21:59

I just checked the starlink tracker and it said it couldn't been seen from my area for the next 5 days? Confused

LucyAutumn · 19/04/2020 22:00

I've just looked it up on Google images and that is definitely not what I saw and heard, much more distance between and definitely heard plane sounds.

notimagain · 19/04/2020 22:02

Because they've not been around that long.. What you are seeing is a string of satellites (60 ish per launch) all deployed from a single launcher....and the first mass deployment was only last year. They also AFAIK only stay in a tight group for a limited amount of time after launch.they gradually drift apart.

Whilst I know they look impressive many astronomers (professional and amateur) are really not fans of the things since they stuff up imaging of the night sky..

Slith · 19/04/2020 22:04

If you can hear them then they're not satellites...

Vintagevixen · 19/04/2020 22:04

God how wierd, I've just moved to the south coast and DD and I were just outside putting the bin out, admiring the clear night sky (very different from the light pollution inLondon so quite exciting for us 😂) We saw several of these lights and DD was asking what they were, then I come back in and here's this thread telling me!

Slith · 19/04/2020 22:08

That's only going to be a temporary issue. The main reason for Starlink is to provide funding for Starship and Super Heavy, as soon as they are up and running astronomers will be able to launch new space-based telescopes with far better capability than ground based ones for a fraction of the cost.
