Long line of planes flying over or a series of satellites?

We are near the South Coast and there a constant stream of lights going over, equi distant very high up?
Not on Flighttracker.

Can anyone else see them?

I looked for them (I am South East London) but couldn't see them. l am a bit sad because I was hoping too.

Everythingmagnolia · 20/04/2020 22:21

Northumberland here, we saw about 8 of them. They were much further apart than I was expecting, but really cool to see!

Sameold2020 · 20/04/2020 22:21

We've been waiting 30 minutes but nothing. The sky is so clear too!

BellaMoo · 20/04/2020 22:24

In Oxfordshire and we saw 7/8 of them over about 20 mins. There’s another chance tomorrow I think.

WriteAndErase · 20/04/2020 22:27

In West Yorkshire here, I've seen about 8 going along the same line.

Also saw a shooting star (I think) which went across the line very fast.

Namepound · 20/04/2020 22:27

Outskirts of Birmingham and nothing to report here but then again in not sure what I’m looking for

WriteAndErase · 20/04/2020 22:28

They basically look like stars moving along an invisible line.

Cherrysoup · 20/04/2020 22:29

Nothing in Herts. I wonder if they’re too far over to see from my quite enclosed garden. We see the space station ok, thought we’d see the satellites. Oh well, a few interesting minutes in the garden!

VivaLeBeaver · 20/04/2020 22:30

I saw them. Really cool.

DuaneDibbley · 20/04/2020 22:35

They were very spaced out (!) tonight; basically look at the plough and they passed through every few minutes.

Whitegrenache · 20/04/2020 22:36

We saw a few tonight in Durham and yes a shooting star too!

BogRollBOGOF · 20/04/2020 22:43

My DCs wanted to go stargazing so last night we went for a night walk on the tail end of sunset to bide some time and we saw the string of satelites going over about 21:40. I did wonder what they were from the way they were moving so consistently which is unusual for satelites. Military planes occured to me at first, but there were too many.
I also saw a shooting star, but they're too rapid to point out to the kids. We were using a stargazing app to identify constellations with the GPS.
No bats this time, but we heard owls.

My 9 year old said it was one of the best moments of his life Halo

Starlink space display 'set to continue all week' www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52355706

bettybattenburg · 20/04/2020 22:58

I've seen this just now and I'm in the east Midlands. Definitely sounded like planes, not perfectly equal distance, especially one that nearly flew past the one in front of it. I counted 12.

Whatever you were hearing it certainly wasn't the Starlink satellites. You might have seen them but you can't hear them - they are like vogon space ships moving silently.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/04/2020 23:03

No, not like Vogons, they didn't hang in the air in much the same way that bricks don't. More like if ET had been remade with really bright bike lights Grin

IHaveAMagicBean · 20/04/2020 23:19

Here’s a link so you can see the satellites passing you.

Grin I'm just glad they didn't spout poetry,

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 21/04/2020 06:58

would these have been in the. northwest over Blackpool at the beginning of March? I was laying in bed at my friend's house, no curtains up and woke up in the dark and thought I was going mad as I could see things moving across the sky

Slith · 22/04/2020 20:00

Next launch in half an hour if anyone's interested...

Freeekedout · 22/04/2020 21:26

Just watched the launch. Popping outside to see some going over in a minute. Will these be the ones they’ve just launched?!!

noavailablename · 22/04/2020 21:28

Its been all over the news.
We are just going out to watch.

Slith · 22/04/2020 21:39

@Freeekedout

Nope, those will be Starlink-5 which was the previous launch.

Slith · 22/04/2020 21:40

Starlink-6 which has just launched will be naturally spreading out over the next few days before deploying their solar panels (the reflective bit).

Freeekedout · 22/04/2020 23:06

Thanks Slith! This fascinated me but I can't find the answers to my questions!

How long does it take for the rocket to return to earth once it's released the satellites?

Is the flight manned with a crew? If so, how many?

What size is each of the satellites?

How can I see a relatively small object in slave, but I can't see something the same size the same distance away on earth?

I'm amazed that we can pinpoint to the minute what time the satellites will be visible from earth, when they're travelling so fast over such a vast area. My mind is blown!

I've unleashed my inner geek!
