Can You Use Shower Gel as Shampoo?

jamie108 · 19/04/2020 02:28

My boyfriend recently sent me the below article which seems to claim that it is safe to use shower gel as shampoo. Any thoughts?

Safe? Why would it be unsafe?
Of course you can use it, it won't necessarily be the best thing for most hair types but it will clean your hair.
Ive used bar soaps and washing up liquid to wash my hair in desperate times. Sometimes clean is the best you can do.

ElizabethMainwaring · 19/04/2020 02:34

Of course it is. Pretty much same ingredients.

Spartak · 19/04/2020 02:35

What would be unsafe about it? Just keep your mouth closed when you rinse it off as it probably doesn't taste very nice.

nellythenarwhal · 19/04/2020 02:37

Of course it's safe! Some men's shower gels encourage head to toe use. Not sure it's very conditioning though

Cos normal shampoo is delicious.. 🙄

😂

Unsafe Grin Come on OP soap is soap. What do you think could happen? Hair will explode?

PragmaticWench · 19/04/2020 02:41

Yes you can but it will most likely strip your hair of all moisture.

Wiltinglillies · 19/04/2020 02:43

Of course you can.
I've used washing up liquid before. It was like one of those expensive residue removing shampoos ... worked wonders!

managedmis · 19/04/2020 02:46

Do it

StarlightLady · 19/04/2020 04:49

Washing up liquid, shampoo, shower gel are all detergents.

Just avoid washing your hair in Cif or Demestos!

bettybattenburg · 19/04/2020 05:01

It's what I always use, it leaves my hair shiny and in good condition.

Oysterbabe · 19/04/2020 05:29

Safe? If it's safe for your body nothing bad will happen if you put it on your hair. Of course it's fine.

CSIblonde · 19/04/2020 05:44

Washing up liquid is good too. I used aloe Vera liquid soap at a push once too when I'd run out of proper shampoo.

hesgotit · 19/04/2020 06:29

No your head will fall off!

AlwaysCheddar · 19/04/2020 07:59

Buy some shampoo?

chantico · 19/04/2020 08:08

Why on earth would it be unsafe?

Any soap/detergent will do - even washing up liquid, but you'll need oodles of conditioner after that.

(And of course I mean only products you handle, not ones for machines - most laundry and all dishwasher ones are unsafe)

Musing on it, the idea that we need separate products for stuff is probably fostered by manufacturers to make us buy more

puddleducker · 19/04/2020 09:33

I wouldn't, I used it for a week once and it really irritated and dried out my scalp.

thenightsky · 19/04/2020 09:37

I used it for about consecutive 3 washes once and my hair looked awful. Greasy and limp on top, yet straw like and crunchy on the ends. Plus my scalp itched like I was over run with nits!
The bottle did say hair and body wash on it too. This was Badedas.

ElloElloVera · 19/04/2020 09:41

Me and DD use fairy liquid every now and again to take all the crap out of our hair. I believe Twiggy used to recommend it.

Soap is soap. Just some are harsher than others. Can’t understand why you’d think safety was an issue Hmm

CecilyP · 19/04/2020 09:41

It’s just detergent and definitely milder than washing up liquid! Shampoo tends to be formulated so it doesn’t sting if it gets in your eyes, otherwise it is much the same.

Ragwort · 19/04/2020 09:42

Of course you can.

Sorry to be harsh but I am amazed at the lack of common sense shown on here Hmm.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 19/04/2020 09:44

I wash my hair with dove shower gel and soap and give it a nice mask (I did before anyway). My scalp is so MUCH happier. Full, fluffy, lighter hair. It's all conspiracy to make us pay £££ for shampoos. 😑

ColourMyDreams · 19/04/2020 09:44

Of course it's safe. It's not going to cause your head to explode.
I've used the dogs shampoo on mine before now.

EricaNernie · 19/04/2020 09:46

I worked with someone who was reminiscing about using fairy liquid as shampoo as a child, that experience has passed me by. am willing to try Wink
