Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

'Trimmings' when a roast dinner is advertised in a pub or restaurant.

Sunday roast with all the trimmings Envy

"Are you serious" (along with feigned horror over the most mundane things) - I had a friend who used to say this all the time and it was so irritating.

"I haven't had any lunch today"
"Are you serious?"

"The gas man didn't turn up"
"Are you serious?"

"Boots didn't have the foundation I wanted"
"Are you serious?"

No - I'm just making it up for the hell of it. 🤬

dkanin · 20/04/2020 16:56

Oh and another one - "singing from the same hymn sheet."

It's completely nonsensical because even if people were singing from different hymn sheets they'd still be singing the same words. It's not like vicars put out slightly different ones as a prank and someone's standing in the middle of the congregation singing "world to the joy"

LockdownLucy · 20/04/2020 16:57

I have no idea how "brainfart" caught on. Also "pick your brains" is horrible.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 20/04/2020 16:58

yy to curate.
You only curate anything if you WORK IN A MUSEUM. Or an art gallery.
Otherwise, fuck off.

Clevererthanyou · 20/04/2020 17:01

It’s probably been written here already but I feel an overwhelming urge to add ‘trouser’ and ‘lip’ when describing someone’s ‘look’.

ie “For sure, her look is fabulous. I love how she’s paired a nude lip with a navy leg, I simply must find out where she curated that shoe too ... “

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

and jambalaya Angry

isabellerossignol · 20/04/2020 17:01

I'm not actually sure what people mean when they say 'mugged off'. I think it's one I don't hear in real life otherwise I could probably work it out from the context.

Since I don't know what it means and it doesn't sound very nice, I'm happy to join with those who hate it!

isabellerossignol · 20/04/2020 17:13

Nom has been mentioned a lot and I agree.

Every time I see that 'Pinch of Nom' cookbook for sale I think 'why on earth did you call it that?'. I know they started with a website or something, and the book was named after it, but the same question applies!

LewScroose · 20/04/2020 17:36

The word “toppings” makes me indescribably ragey

OzziePopPop · 20/04/2020 17:44

Beverage. My ex used to ask if I’d like ‘a beverage’ rather than ‘a drink’ or ‘a coffee’ etc. I got the ick, badly!

Jezebel101 · 20/04/2020 17:52

I find it difficult to adequately express how much I loathe and despise the word 'pamper'.

You go pamper yourself, I'll be an adult.

Harls1969 · 20/04/2020 17:53

Panties (urgh, just wrong), fur babies (how fucking twee, I love my cats but they're pets not fur babies!). Any phrase that tries to make death sound endearing (passed away, lost, gone over the rainbow bridge - they've died, we all do!). Bae, babe, hun. Clitoris (don't know why but the word makes me shudder, especially when shortened 🤢). Making love. I'm sure there are loads more. Not really sure what's wrong with 'meal' though.

Jezebel101 · 20/04/2020 17:53

Oh, anyone (but especially a man) who says something is 'tasty' needs a sharp slap across the face and a kick so far up the arse you need an archaeologist to dig it out.

Housemum · 20/04/2020 17:57

“Mouthfeel”
“Doggo”
“A feed” (as in babies) I don’t know why it makes me cringe

AstiPooMante · 20/04/2020 18:00

Hate ‘helping’ and ‘lashings of’ and also ‘a bite to eat’ .

FelicisNox · 20/04/2020 18:01

I've always hated "big time" as it sounds very Ricky Gervais circa The Office.

Also when people I don't know refer to me as "hun" or "my dear'.... totally patronising.

Also hate it when people write "nom nom nom" on posts. Urgh!

prawntail · 20/04/2020 18:03

Meal. Picky tea. Pleasing.

simiisme · 20/04/2020 18:04

I'm fascinated by what most of you have left to say.
To avoid so many words and phrases, you must be either as articulate as Stephen Fry or mostly silent.
I don't understand the rage that most of these words seem to cause.
Meal is the oddest one.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 20/04/2020 18:08

Mealy mouthed
Horse meal
making a meal of it
"this potato is a bit mealy"

It's an unpleasant word.

Ipadipod · 20/04/2020 18:15

It’s stomach, for goodness

The doctors I used to work with always said tummy because the stomach is a specific , small area ( higher up than most people realise) , tummy refers to a larger area.

Violinist64 · 20/04/2020 18:22

I cannot bear hubby, meh or, worst of all, my bad. They make me cringe.
