Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
orangejuicer · 20/04/2020 07:59

Cuppa. ARGH. Gives me the rage Wink

Davros · 20/04/2020 08:11

I've been ranting about "stay home", makes me vom. Stay AT home ffs
I also hate "fib" and "poorly"
And why are so many kids saying "mama"?!

ReallysmallAndfaraway · 20/04/2020 08:47

Mine is a phrase, fashion shops and websites demanding that I "Shop the edit."
Just typing it out pisses me off!

whatdoyoudonow · 20/04/2020 09:01

The 'hubster' 🤮

LaMarschallin · 20/04/2020 09:36

I'm another who loathes "belly".
It wasn't until lockdown that I noticed how often DH uses it - "Ah, the cat is sunning her belly". Godsake!

And yet I'm fine with using "belly pork" for a cut of meat. Possibly in the same way that I'd happily order "rump steak" but wouldn't refer to my own "rump".

Which reminds me: I hate phrases like "rumpy-pumpy" or "bonking" which always makes me think of people sniggering about sex in "Carry On" films or as seen on mildly dirty postcards.

"Snigger" is pretty bad too, but I think, at least, it's supposed to sound horrible.

LaMarschallin · 20/04/2020 09:44

And, poor DH, his pronunciation is annoying me: that Italian cheese is pronounced "mot-zarella", not "mozz-arella" like in "mozzie" for "mosquito".
And that bread is "chee-a-batta" not "see-a-batta".

Haven't you noticed that I say it back to you:

DH: "Can I pass you some see-a-batta?"
Me: "Yes please, I'd like some chee-a-batta can you not actually hear me saying "chee"? ".

Farheatarse · 20/04/2020 09:45

I’ve got a friend who does a bit of running, except he doesn’t run, he bimbles..

‘Just been for a lovely bimble along the seafront’.. accompanied by a picture of his run and photo of his watch with timings etc.

The omission of the work ‘of’ in sentences describing the reason for things really annoys me.

‘I’m late because traffic..’ etc.

LaMarschallin · 20/04/2020 09:55

I've just thought, maybe it's an Italian food thing with DH, because he does like some "fock-arse-ia" too.

ZaraW · 20/04/2020 09:59

I have no issue with belly, but loathe tummy. When an adult says "my tummy hurts" it sounds a bit pathetic.

Jjjjjj1981 · 20/04/2020 10:03

‘Poorly’ 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️........you mean ill right??!

Hubby/Hubster/Hubs.......does your other half not have a name, could you not use that??!

nakedavengerreturns · 20/04/2020 11:51

I can't even say the word 'belly'. Ugh

I also can't cope with controversial pronunciations for 'foodstuffs'. I have a friend who speaks Spanish who corrects me every fucking time but not before her DH tries to correct me, but not adequately in her eyes, so ordering at tapas restaurant:

Me: shall we have Chore itzo
Friend DH: It's Choreetho
Friend: Shoritho
Everyone glares at each other.

Me: how about the Pie Ella?
Friend DH: it's Pie eyah
Friend: Payeyah
Fisticuffs

I say it the way I do because I can't bloody remember which one it is

Its the same in Italian restaurants with Focaccia, Ciabatta, Mozzarella and the fucking worst: Aran bastard Cini. SOMEONE has to say something or loudly order in a different, inexplicable pronunciation so everyone knows 'they know'

CatteStreet · 20/04/2020 11:52

Argh LaMarschallin, mine always says brushetta despite having heard it plenty (correctly) from the rest of us. My dc have even made the darn stuff more than once. Still stubbornly 'brushetta' from dh. Confused

German pisses me off by calling the bathroom 'bath' and the bath 'bathtub' (obviously in the German equivalents), likewise a bike is a 'wheel'. And they have different words for a sink depending on whether it's in the bathroom or the kitchen. My German is near-native but I still can't get my head round those ones.

MontanaSkies · 20/04/2020 11:55

"Bite to eat" or just "bite".

As in "just popping out for a bite".

DiscoDown · 20/04/2020 12:04

I can't bear the words used for eating in the likes of Chat and Take a Break in stories where the subject was fat then lost weight. It's all "gorged", "stuffed", "guzzled", "binged", none of these people just eat. I think it's the judgement implied in all of them, that fat people can't just eat, they're all greedy.

I also can't bear "boobed" as in "i boobed the baby", it makes me feel ill. I breastfed DS so it's not the act, just the wording.

LaMarschallin · 20/04/2020 12:12

I say it the way I do because I can't bloody remember which one it is

Oh dear - now I feel bad for DH. Perhaps he just can't remember some things.

I certainly remember pronouncing "awry" at school as "or-ree".
I wasn't even in primary school - I was 16 and had heard "uh-rye" but never connected it with "awry".
Didn't forget that one due to the mocking I got Blush

I do take your point though - laboured and loud foreign pronunciation can also be very irritating.

And I still mumble "chorizo" and "gnocchi" because I'm not really sure how they should sound. Although a kind Italian poster here told me the latter should be "know-key". So I feel happier about that.
No idea about Moet et Chandon.
"Mo-way"? "Mo-ette"?

Sadly, it's never really a problem as I'm very rarely in a position to say it Sad

So it'll have to be "bubbles", "fizz" or "shampoo".
And I'll remember to comment on the fact that it makes my nose tickley...Smile

Abreadsandwich · 20/04/2020 12:14

These are not awful or cringey words but words that annoy me because they have no opposite (teachers or those more knowledgable in grammar will be able to give me the technical term)
For example - my mum would talk about "uncouth" behaviour.....but is there such a thing as couth?
They also used the word unsavoury....but is savoury ever used to describe things in the same context?
You can be overwhelmed by something, or even underwhelmed....but no one would be simply whelmed.
Some words starting with dis- have an original word eg disorganised....from organised
But a lot dont seem to (disgusted, dismayed, distressed)

Sorry a bit off topic there,, maybe this belongs in pedants corner.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 20/04/2020 12:25

@MontanaSkies Oh God, I haaate that. My husband always says 'a bite' and I can't stand it. 'Shall we go out for a bite?' Just say food. It's fine.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 20/04/2020 12:55

Thank God I'm not the only one ranting about the missing AT. I fucking will not Stay Home.
A lot of mine are things I only ever read in MN and refuse to believe really exist in RL.

Needs done
Sanpro
Outwith (this might be Scottish though?. Everyone on MN is Scottish or from London)
Local "go to your local greengrocer" because I was going to drive 2 hours to one in the next town..
Hot meal in the context of "children don't need a hot meal twice a day"
Or any meal really. Meeeeeel Grin
Life admin
Veg
PJ Day
So...
Batch cook
Hobby
Health Care Professional
Prep used by people who don't work in professional kitchens.
Property as used on TV. It's a house! As soon as houses and flats became property, that's when the rot set in.

Anything cute or twee or infantilising:
Snuggles
Little Family
Family Time
Lazy Day
Comfy
Or, even worse UN- comfy!

I love the word belly though. Belly belly belly Halo

ALemonyPea · 20/04/2020 13:04

I know it's grammatically correct, but the term host or hosting really annoys me. I'm hosting Christmas this year, I have been asked to host their birthday... just no!

Also bits. I'm going to the shop for some bits 😡

And lastly, the word sarnie gives me the rage.

CatteStreet · 20/04/2020 13:07

'Outwith' (yes, it is Scottish) is a brilliant word! I'm not Scottish and very envious of it.

Can't stand any short form of 'pyjamas' whatsoever. 'PJs' is by far the worst, though.

LockdownLucy · 20/04/2020 13:11

Human Resources makes me shudder. It sounds as if it was invented by aliens.

isabellerossignol · 20/04/2020 13:13

Outwith is definitely not made up. I've seen it on invoices for example 'outwith the scope of VAT' .

LockdownLucy · 20/04/2020 13:15

Oh another! "We're trying for a baby" - what you're essentially communicating that you and Dave are having lots of sloppy sex. Just shhh.

AvonBarksdale99 · 20/04/2020 13:18

Why does it have to be sloppy!
