'Foodstuffs' and other words too awful to mention.

Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 19/04/2020 18:51

I hate the word ‘flavourful’. I have no idea why but whenever I hear or read it I get irrationally irritated

LakieLady · 19/04/2020 18:56

@Carbosug, I'd add to your list houses that "flow well".

Listen, love, if your house is "flowing" it's probably been washed away by a tidal wave.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 19/04/2020 18:57

I'm so pleased someone else has mentioned meal and Amelia - I just think of meal worms.
Also I can't bear 'toolkit' - It's a list of useful information.

I agree with most of these but Hanamuslim I shuddered when I read yours.

LaMarschallin · 19/04/2020 19:02

The tabloid-y "stepping out".

No one seems to get reported about as going out or visiting the theatre or something...
They're always "stepping out". As though they might break into break into a song and dance routine.

And I used to like the word "adorable" but now every time a "cute tot" does something, it's "adorable" (and may "melt hearts" too).
Princess Charlotte's hair bobbles were "adorable", apparently.
Hair bobbles!

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 19/04/2020 19:07

I really hate ways of describing 'important' people like top dog and big bug. Big bug in particular makes me irrationally angry and I have no idea why

user1498572889 · 19/04/2020 19:15

I hate “ taking ownership of the problem”

HazelBite · 19/04/2020 19:18

The word "like" accompanied by a gesture or included as a prefix for any and every word in a sentence/ conversation.

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 19/04/2020 19:24

"Learnings" for "lessons". I can say no more on that one. Rage.

Whatdayisit2 · 19/04/2020 19:27

"Beverage"
It's a drink non?!

jcurve · 19/04/2020 19:29

Describing anything as either lush or divine (usually misspelt as devine). Lush is such a horrendous word.

StVincent · 19/04/2020 19:38

I have an unhealthy hate for “self-care” and “wellness”. It’s called looking after yourself, and health. Both words make me think the person saying it MUST be a giant twat and really up their own arse.

missmouse101 · 19/04/2020 19:42

Information pack. You mean a couple of sheets of paper in a twatty cardboard folder?

CatteStreet · 19/04/2020 19:49

'I don't like it when people say "a wine" for a glass of wine.'

I feel the same - especially in uses like 'after a few wines' - while 'after a few beers' is acceptable. Confused I also say 'a coffee', but 'a cup of tea'.

'Activities', in relation to children's, um, activities, annoys me. Adults have hobbies, children have 'activities'.

The use of 'nice' to mean 'luxurious' and/or 'expensive'.

CatteStreet · 19/04/2020 19:51

Actually, rereading my last post, the imprecise use of 'few' in present-day English annoys me. I've seen loads of posts on here talking about 'a few months' where, from the context, they can't mean more than two, three at a push. For me, 'a few' of anything starts at about four or five.

MrsMartinKemp · 19/04/2020 19:52

Making love
They are pregnant
Meal

Hamsham · 19/04/2020 19:54

Just thought of another one..

When someone suggests getting together to 'have a natter'. Awful!

Bumpsadaisie · 19/04/2020 20:01

"A large helping..."

Urgh it makes my skin crawl.

So does "serving suggestion".

Bumpsadaisie · 19/04/2020 20:02

Oh "beverage". Shudder!

theworldaccordingtome · 19/04/2020 20:54

"A huge salad" usually said in a sanctimonious tone on Mumsnet where all food perceived to be "good" is in "huge" portions and puddings are all ways "little treats".

theworldaccordingtome · 19/04/2020 20:55

*always

LaMarschallin · 19/04/2020 20:57

And said salad will be "inhaled" or "wolfed down".
Or, even worse, here in the Midlands it's more often than not "woofed" down.
Which makes no sense.

fessmess · 19/04/2020 21:00

Just one word.. yum. 🤢

Wishimaywishimight · 19/04/2020 21:07

Mine relate mostly to food - meal, nutritious, from scratch...

Also hate when people overemphasise how much they love their children - I love the the bones of them, they are my world etc etc - of course you love them, no need to over egg the pud...

Oh yeah, 'pudding' is another one I hate - it's 'dessert' to me. I've never seen a 'pudding' section on a menu, only a 'dessert' section...

Wishimaywishimight · 19/04/2020 21:14

Ah yes, a red lip - it's not "a lip", there are two of them. Similarly, a smoky eye... As for "killer heels" - high heels I think you mean?

Wishimaywishimight · 19/04/2020 21:21

Been drinking gin & prosecco since 6pm so on a roll...

People referring to babies as 'a tiny baby' or a 'a little baby' - surely 'baby' would suffice. I mean, we know, by virtue of the word 'baby' that they are small beings...
