'Foodstuffs' and other words too awful to mention.

Some words just really make me shudder. Also, 'meal' and 'helping' as in 'another helping of broccoli'. Noooo

OP posts:
Silenceisnotgolden · 19/04/2020 12:44

I have irrational food vocabulary related rage. ‘All the trimmings’ in relation to side dishes makes me so angry, as does ‘supper’. I have no idea why.

nakedavengerreturns · 19/04/2020 12:47

@LadyEloise ooh that's interesting. No Irish connections for him as far as I'm aware.
You've reminded me though of my hate of 'I've come on' meaning started period.

I also hate 'putting down' for putting a baby to sleep
'I'll just put him down'
'She just wouldn't go down'. I can't stand it!

Saucy99 · 19/04/2020 12:47

Best thread I've ever read.
My own hate is 'mare' as in 'OMG we he had a mare'.

nakedavengerreturns · 19/04/2020 12:50

@Silenceisnotgolden ' all the trimmings' makes me murderous. Usually found on Facebook accompanying a picture of a distinctly average Sunday roast with insufficient gravy or lacking Yorkshire puddings which to me is a key 'trim'

Mucklowe · 19/04/2020 12:51

I can't stand twee or over-sentimental language surrounding bodily functions, and pregnancy/childbirth.

The worst has to be "baby dancing". It puts me in mind of that freaky dancing baby from Ally McBeal. Just say "having sex", for fuck's sake.

nakedavengerreturns · 19/04/2020 13:01

I'm on a roll.

My mother uses the words 'slimming' and 'fattening' interchangeably. I hate it. It sounds so ... 80's

'Ohh Naked that cocktail isn't very slimming'
'Ohh Naked that sandwich looks fattening'

'Don't mind if I do!!!!' The same Facebook posts from idiot women I used to know when I was 8: 'Cheeky Prosecco? Don't mind if I do!' Just fucking drink it. We don't care.

SerenDippitty · 19/04/2020 13:15

Not too fussed on bundle of joy either.

Pinnacular · 19/04/2020 13:24

Nourishing and tasty to describe food. My mother overuses them. I agree with the poster who reckons lots of this is parentally connected.

Island for a roundabout. I know it's regional but it sounds so dopey.

Can't think of a phrase for having sex that isn't awful - lovemaking, making love, intercourse, shagging, fucking, getting it on, etc etc. Either too twee, clinical or crude.

Needs done verb usage is the worst though. It NEEDS TO BE DONE or NEEDS DOING.

dkanin · 19/04/2020 13:26

Nourishing
Famished
Morsel
Adulting

People who ask for recommendations on FB and end the sentence with "and go.." like everyone will be falling over themselves in their desperation to reply

"Modest" and "demure" when describing favourable traits of an item of clothing - as though we women should all be shy and retiring flowers and we'd be disgusting tramps for showing a bit of ankle 🤢

Phrases like "got my hurr did"

Calling tuna "tuna fish" - what the fuck else would it be

Using the word "travel" instead of "holiday" as though it's something superior

Adults saying words like "super" - it sounds like they're frolicking through a field of daisies in an Enid Blyton book

Sonichu · 19/04/2020 13:29

"Food of the gods" usually used on here to describe spaghetti hoops on toast or something.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 19/04/2020 13:30

Meal especially when said by my df. Or like tasty meal or we had a nice meal

When people say I teamed a this top with a pair of jeans

DontTouchTheMoustache · 19/04/2020 13:34

The word 'veggies' makes me irrationality angry. It sounds so smug for some reason

EngagedAgain · 19/04/2020 13:35

To the pp who mentioned Sanpro - admittedly I've used it on here before, when I've always referred to them as ST's. Because that's what I always used. Or one could say Tampons. San pro covers the whole lot. (Misses the point of the thread?)

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 19/04/2020 13:39

I hate the current trend for using the present participle instead of an adverb, eg "ice cream is so addicting". Argh!

SeeSawSeen · 19/04/2020 13:41

Admittedly, I've been watching way too much Say Yes to the Dress lately, but there's one word used constantly that fills me with absolute revulsion: 'entourage', as in 'who have you got in your entourage?' I can't bear it! Talk about pandering nonsense. I roll my eyes right to the back of my head everytime they use it, which is approximately 1463 times an episode.

Another one is when the bride-to-be flaps her hands and says 'Dobt cry, you'll make me cry!' when you know she's only dying for her 'entourage' to cry, because apparently, crying is now the only way that you can show you truly care. Ugh.

And "I want to feel like a princess". Again, major eyerollsHmm

Not really sure why I still watch Say Yes to the Dress given that it annoys me so much...

SoftBlocks · 19/04/2020 13:45

‘Plated meals’ is awful, as is ‘supper’.

StVincent · 19/04/2020 13:49

@choli DP says “sammidges”. I thought it was an affectation but he claims not to realise he is doing it. Fucking hell.

StVincent · 19/04/2020 14:03

Angry just remembered the loathsome “The future Mrs X!” Usually a caption on social media of a hen night or engagement photo etc. That woman is a vet, a good friend, an excellent guitar player, funny as fuck etc etc but oh no, that’s all as nought now - because her whole value lies in her amazing capacity to bag a very mediocre man and change her name.

Whatisthisfuckery · 19/04/2020 14:04

Can we agree that "making love" as an expression is awful? Fortunately I don't think many people use it these days.

I may be wrong about this, but I am almost certain that when reading books that were written maybe 100 years ago or more, 'making love' was used in the context of a young couple spending a bit of time together and maybe stealing a peck on the cheek, or whispering declarations of love in each other's ears. Very clean cut and acceptable activities for the time.

I remember when i was much younger reading ‘Emma” by Jane Austen. I was a bit bored, it not being a very exciting book for a teenager. I was thinking, ‘when are the good bits gonna happen?’ And then there’s a bit that says ‘Mr Elton started making violent love to me.’ Oh, here we go I thought, here’s the juicy bit. Erm no, haha, maybe not then.

‘Making love’ is an awful saying though. I think it would cool my passion immediately.

midsomermurderess · 19/04/2020 14:18

I only came across 'plated meals' on a thread here recently. It sounds like something out of the 1950s and for some reason I find it quite dismal and depressing.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/04/2020 14:28

Ickle.

There is a lady on my fb who always describes herself as "ickle" it does my head in!

And batch. As in batch cooking. Dunno why. Just don't like it.

babybunny123 · 19/04/2020 14:40

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 19/04/2020 14:55

Also "goodness", when used in phrases like "woolly goodness", ie. wool, or "bookish goodness", meaning books. Usually refers to some crap that is being "unboxed".

EngagedAgain · 19/04/2020 14:55

Got a few more - words the press tend to use alot to describe peoples looks - radiant visage, incredible, leggy (when they're clearly NOT!)
Also, agree with deep cleaning, it's just cleaning all said and done. It's like you're dirty if you don't deep clean.

Batch cooking. Almost makes me break out in a cold sweat, just the mere thought of it. Might be ok as a one off for some reason, but on a regular basis noooo!

foxychox · 19/04/2020 15:02

Mooch, as in a mooch around the shops. Makes me think of someone in a dirty raincoat dragging their knuckles.....
