I really want to but is it overkill? Will I regret it? Will we turn orange?

It might be a bit sweet but I would

mistermagpie · 18/04/2020 17:58

What, mash on the side of cottage pie? But cottage pie is mash? No it's all wrong I'm afraid.

I serve peas with mine usually.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/04/2020 17:59

Bit farty, that. Too much swede.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/04/2020 18:00

Why not save the mash for hashbrowns / bubble and squeak tomorrow?

Theduchessstill · 18/04/2020 18:01

Ooh I hadn't thought of gaseous implications Envy.

We will be having green beans and peas come what may, but I love carrot and swede mash - because I put a tonne each of butter and salt in and it therefore tastes completely different from how it is in the body of the pie...

Agreed Shock

Covidnamechanger · 18/04/2020 18:03

Do you mean AS the mash on top? Or as well as the cottage pie which already has mash on it? The latter would be far too much I think.

tywysoges · 18/04/2020 18:04

I think OP means there will be carrot and swede with the meat and then carrot and swede mash on top... or maybe not Blush

Oysterbabe · 18/04/2020 18:05

Nah, too much mash. Use it to top the pie instead of potato then do a few roast potatoes with it.

Oysterbabe · 18/04/2020 18:06

Ah I was thinking double mash too, maybe you meant on top.

MummytoCSJH · 18/04/2020 18:06

@tywysoges that's what I thought too? I think that's fine.

tywysoges · 18/04/2020 18:07

Double mash = YABU
Instead of potato mash = YANBU

GrimmsFairytales · 18/04/2020 18:09

Ah I was thinking double mash too

That's how it sounds from the title. To serve carrot and swede mash with cottage pie...

If it's on the top then that's acceptable. Grin

Theduchessstill · 18/04/2020 18:09

On no it wouldn't be on top - that would be instead of potato and then it would be a no-carb meal - or at least, low-carb. No, that won't be happening. Mash of carrot and swede is a very different beast from mash of the potato.

OP posts:
GrimmsFairytales · 18/04/2020 18:11

On no it wouldn't be on top

In that case definitely BU. You can't have mash on top and then on the side, it's all wrong. Grin

worldweary45 · 18/04/2020 18:13

I would totally have the buttery goodness that is carrot and swede mash with absolutely anything

I've even been known to have it as a meal by itself! well with Yorkshire puddings and gravy

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Elouera · 18/04/2020 18:13

I did something similar lastnight, when I only had 2 potatoes left. I added parsnip and sweet potato to the mash. Any root veg will work. I've also mashed celeriac, cauli, swede and carrot no problems (not all in the one mash, but at different times)

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 18/04/2020 18:14

You can’t have mash on top and a side of mash!

The point of cottage pie is you have the meat and veg in the gravy, mash on top so that’s your meat/potato sorted and you have it with green veg as the only side

BogRollBOGOF · 18/04/2020 18:14

Mashed swede is an abomination. Tastes like mash that's been peed on Envy

Theduchessstill · 18/04/2020 18:23

You haven't been doing it right BogRoll probably not been putting enough butter and salt.

Well, I'm going for it. I've checked the fridge and there's nothing else that remotely goes with c & s mash and the swede won't last til next shopping trip so...

Chillicheese123 · 18/04/2020 18:23

No
Carrot and Swede mash is like sugary baby food, vile and orange
Just make normal mash with butter and salt like a normal person !!

borntobequiet · 18/04/2020 18:26

YABU to put carrot and swede in the cottage pie.

exLtEveDallas · 18/04/2020 18:29

I always do a layer of carrot and swede mash before the mashed potatoes in a cottage pie. It goes really well.

Buildalegohouse · 18/04/2020 18:35

YABVU because cottage pie is gross enough without adding swede mash too. Shudder.

Theduchessstill · 18/04/2020 18:36

Ah exLtEveDallas if only you have posted that 10 minutes ago I'm would definitely have done that - I'm stealing for the future. Flowers

Can't believe the carrot and swede haters on here Shock.
